Going to post what I wrote in another thread:
An epic (Star Wars level)
Robotech film series. With Maguire helming this thus far, and whats their names writing the first draft, I have no doubt it will be meh. The film needs only a couple of "big names" with fresh talent, and the score has to match that of the original cartoon. The story doesn't need any changing (aside from maybe length), just replace 1999 with 2009. It also has to be deep and have a strong take on government, love, race and what it truely is to realize we're not alone in this universe.
I would want it broken down like this:
Film 1: Macross Saga up until "Homecoming". Have the story focus on the SDF-1 crashing on earth, then the journey from Pluto back to earth. Mix in some backstory of what happens after the ship crashes (comic that explains what happened when we first searched the ship) along with a little hint to the Robotech Masters and Protoculture (like Star Wars references the Emporer slightly). End it with a cliffhanger of the United Earth Gov't not wanting the SDF-1 back on the planet.
Film 2: Picks up from "battle Cry", the film opens with Khyron's attack on the ship. This film focuses more on Rick Hunter's development, along with Ben and Max, the death of Roy Fokker, his relationship with Minmei and her cousin Lynn Kyle, and the growing attraction to Lisa. The film concludes after "Force of Arms", after most of the Zentradi are defeated, and how the characters now have to restore their destroyed planet.
Film 3: Picks up from "Reconstruction Blues" and goes until the Macross finale. Have it jump ahead slightly near the end to incorporate some of The Sentinels film, how the future Southern Cross is set up, and Rick and the rest leaving finally with the SDF3 to the Masters' homeworld. The very end of the film showcases the Masters nearly about to arrive at earth.
Film 4: The introduction of a mature Dana Sterling, up to after "The Trap". Have the plot address the corruption and disarray of the UEG, along with an almost mystery theme as to why the Masters are doing what they are. Have the film end after the 15th Squadron's battle onboard the Masters' ship, escaping with Zor Prime, and a brief overview afterwards on the assessment of the Masters and their scheme to capture humans to use as new bioroid pilots.
Film 5: The mounting tensions of the war against the Masters, and the impending doom of the Invid arrival. We get a detailed history of the Masters, Zentradi, the Flower of Life, Protoculture and Invid. The film hits a climax with the final battle against the Masters, leaving a feeling of relief that it is over. However the film continues/ends with the Invid invasion, destruction of earth, and the setup of Reflex Point. We are left lingering with the arrival of Scott Bernard and some of the REF forces on their way.
Film 6: The New Generation story, mixing in details of the REF's journey and encounters. While we see the Invid Regees leave earth, the series "concludes" with the REF, uncertain if they will make it home to earth, and the threat of another race (The Sentinels) in a shadowy background. This film provides both closure, yet also leaves the door open for potential future stories, the ones that Harmony Gold and the comics never got to fully deliver.
I'm sure I could plan this out better given time, this is all off the top of my head.
