Jervis Tetch was teased as a child. He was a late bloomer and when he did start growing, some parts grew more than others, leaving him even more an outcast. Lost and alone, Jervis turned to the stories and rhymes of Lewis Carroll. He idolized Carroll and became obsessed with his work. He memorized the entire works.
During his teen years, he attempted to date girls in his peer group, but was constantly rejected. Over time, he came to believe that he needed to meet someone like Alice, someone innocent and young. After he finished college, he was working at a technology company as a research scientist when he met a young, blond girl on the bus named "Alice". He bonded with her, quoting Lewis Carroll to her, and ultimatly desired her. One day, she agreed to come with him. He attempted to make love to her but she rejected him as well. He finally raped and killed her. Her body was found months later.
Since then, he has begun stalking any young, blond girl name Alice he can find, befriend them, and attempt to seduce him. When they turn down his sexual advances, he rapes and kills them, deeming them "fake" Alice's. He is determined to find a "TRUE" Alice.
He has converted his apartment into a Wonderland, choosing his furniture carefully, buying stuffed animals and as many posters of illustrations as he can. He is the worst type of fan boy. His "Mad Hatter" costume was custom made for him by his mother, believing it to be a Halloween costume. He uses it to allow himself to fully enter into his delusion.
So there we go, I think that will fit into Nolan's world. No mind control, just gritty, dark, realism. Of course, if this character appeared in the films, I think he would be in the opening scene, a Bond-esque style opening
