Does anyone engage in this? I was at the bank today, & I was waiting for the teller to get all my sh** done. I started to feel kind of bad that I wasn't talking to her.

But at the same time I hate...HATE! Meaningless conversation. Does anyone else try to small talk with people while you are, waiting on he bus, Bank, grocery store, etc...

I chat with customers and whatnot, but mostly I talk to children, not in a creepy way, but little kids like me, and they can tell I am friendly so they will tell me stories and stuff so I always answer even when I don't want to.

I will, usually. Especially if the two, three or four of us are going to be stuck in the same place for more than five minutes. The only reason I wouldn't is if the person/people in question obviously want to be left alone. But even then, it's kinda' fun. :woot:

I even hate fake conversations within family. You know, get a whole bunch of your brood together and suddenly you have to answer everything over and over and over and over again.

The worse though, is having a conversation with your friends, and the person who is serving you thinks that he/she is deemed in the conversation just by being in there at the time... and adds something you all get very annoyed at.

I don't usually engage in conversations like this unless something happens that I find funny in front of the clerk, then I will talk about that.

example last friday I went to Barnes and Noble was standing back a little ways from the counter there was a lady their before me but she put all her stuff down on the wrong side of the register, lady behind the register said she would have to get her over here, meaning the other side, the woman thought she was talking to me, and yelled I was here first. I took two steps back, keep in mind I was nowhere near the register when she blurted this out, then after she paid for her books and left I stepped up and paid for my books and the extent of the conversation was, jeez reminds me of my grandmother, someone is always trying to do her wrong.

I like asking random strangers if they've ever tried to bite their own face...its very hard.

you'd be surprised how many people I've gotten to actually try it.

nosebleed you are a god amongst mortals *tries* darn it is hard!

Yeah when I go to shops and whatnot I try to engage in some sort of conversation, most of the time it doesn't work. When it comes to independent stores, I love talking to those people because they are passionate about what they are selling.

I'm in sales, so I tend to engage in small talk with quite a few customers. Back when they had me in the DVD section, I'd always meet customers who loved talking about movies. Keeps me from doing actual work, which is nice.

Yeah, that happens to me alot.:csad:

Taking from experaince, some people who take the bus are downright creepy. Or the ones who just like to yell **** at you.

I am not a big fan of talking about the usual small talk. Like Weather, & what not. In fact I hate it.

Although I do like talking with people about movies, & when I am in a small scale book store. I like talking to owners. To see what they like, but at places like the bank, & the grocery store. There really isn't anything interesting to chat about.

I have actually gotten dirty looks. After what ever I was doing was done. They look at me like. WTF? Why didn't you talk?

Oh totally. I have been riding the local transit for 10 years. I know the game. The thing is it is always the ones that you don't want talking to you on the bus. That talk to you.

I live in a college town. So there are plenty of hotties that ride, & none of them have ever talked to me, but the drunk schizo crackhead has a lot to say to me.:csad:

I get annoyed.

Just keep dancing sweetheart.

I'm not paying to talk to you.

I can't go anywhere without someone just wanting to talk to me.:word: Even with my ipod on they just want to chat with me for some odd reason.

When people try to strike up a conversation with me I go along, but not the other way around.

casual conversation? There was an weird silence one time when i was paying for clothes and there was a little kid running around so i thought i'd focus on looking at the adorable child (in an innocent way of course). i said to the cashier- isn't he sweet? to which he replied- is he yours? i was 16 at the time!

Usually I reply and start chatting but whenever I don't feel like talking to somebody I just find some way to make a Star Wars or Star Trek or some kind of geeky reference and then people leave me alone. :)

I don't like to talk,but I will if someone's talking to me.

Some people just don't like silence and need to talk.

One time last November, my family and I went to the movie theater to see Casino Royale. I went to find seats while the rest of my family went to the restrooms. Anyway, when I found four seats I sat in one and save three. Just then a couple walks by and sits in the row in front of me. The guy turns around and just starts talking to me out of the blue. He was well dressed and looked professional. He asked me questions of whether I've seen Casino Royale already. As it turned out, he said he is a music producer in LA and worked on the film's music with David Arnold. Now I don't know if he was telling the truth or not and my family said he was probably lying. Whether he was telling the truth or not, that was the weirdest casual conversation I have had.

I don't mind small talk if it's interesting and intelligent. What I don't like are people who ask the same stupid questions all the time, expecting to get the same stupid answers. An example would be someone walks past you that you might be vaguely familiar with at work or something and they say "Hey, how's it goin'?". The standard issue response is supposed to be "Good, and you?". This is where my tendency to mess with people comes into play and I start giving them answers they were never expecting just to see how they react. Instead of giving the standard "Good, and you?" response I'll say something like "The blood stains come out so I'm really relieved, today! Have you ever had a scare like that?". Some people are actually paying attention and will give you that "WTF?" look, but my favorite ones are the people who are already primed with the standard response of "Good.", and blurt it out and move on without even really having listened to what you just said. You learn a lot about how observant people are with bizarre answers to those kinds of common, meaningless questions that everyone seems to ask in order to seem like they care.
