CBR Poll... Spider-Man married or single?

I could buy Pete being single if he weren't a new avenger/ff member/ and all that stuff. He is a far cry from being that lone superhero he did a team up every once in a while.

I wouldn't say he did a team up every one in a while. Marvel Team Up was essentially the 3rd Spider-Man title for over a decade.

Did they ever post the results of the poll? The original article said the results would be up "next week," but we're at a week and a half later at this point.

yeah, I keep checking but so far, nothing. The Poll is closed and all that but still... I want some Pro-Married results!!!!

Honestly, I think married will win out but not by a dramatic number. I think it'll be somewhat close... if we ever get results that is.

I actually think that married will win out by a dramatic number. While we can argue about the quality of the post-OMD Spider-Man stories, the vast majority of Spider-Man fans were against the ending of his marriage with Mary Jane. There were even news reports that ended up not showing a single fan that was in support of it.

But I think what hurt the most was that One More Day was just one big **** you to the fans. Fans constantly *****ed and moaned that they did not want to end the marriage and yet Marvel went and did it in the worst way possible. While fans preferred seeing Superman and the Flash married, DC could at least justify it with their whole continuity wide relaunch, thus the anger was not widespread.

To be honest, I often wish Marvel would do a continuity wide relaunch with all their characters as well.

I wish companies would stop using this as an out, would actually have the guts to go through with a controversial story & actually make it good. Unfortunately it is seeming like there are less and less good writers out there, and all companies want to do is do something flashy for a bit, then they pull back to their comfort zone.

I don't think that Marvel needs a new continuity. Unlike DC, Marvel hasn't muddled their continuity with the multiverse, merging with other comic book companies, various Crises, making their characters too old, etc.

I'm 27 and not married, but I have several friends who are. They're pretty much the same married as they were before being married. Some of them even--gasp!--hang out with people besides their spouses still! :wow:

Based on a long stretch of Spider-Man comics, you'd think that was impossible. But that's just writers being stupid and arbitrarily putting Peter and MJ into this box where they're the only company the other ever has for years. The Marvel higher-ups just found the marriage to be a convenient scapegoat for said writers' stupidity.

Agreed.

I dunno, sometimes I just feel they've gone as far as they can with the current continuity and maybe it would be fun to see the characters and the universe start from scratch all over again and reinterpreted for a new generation.

That was what the Ultimate universe was for.

A "reinterpretation" wouldn't work, because anything "different" would be called "foul" by the purists, and there are MANY of us...

Most writers don't take continuity seriously in their stories (Bendis, Ellis... I'm looking at you), however, some writers can use it like a proper writing tool for their stopries... Dan Slott's ASM is ripe with continuity and his stories have been excellent... rumour has it that he's bringing back F.A.C.A.D.E. in a future ASM story, which was an unresolved story from the later issues of Web... while that particular story was lame, I think it's cool that a current writer can tap into a 17 year old story and bring some life to it.

A Marvel reboot is NOT necessary... good writing is what Marvel requires... with an ever-present respect to their past.

I was just going to say that. :oldrazz:

If you want a good reboot can always check out Ultimate Spider-Man or the current Ultimate Comics Spider-Man with Miles Morales. I'm actually really enjoying that book a lot right now.

Continuity relaunches are like drugs; once you start doing them, it's hard to stop.

CBR did make note that when they did the same poll back in 09, marriage won by 70%. Less people voted that time but it says to me that as time goes on people are accepting that the marriage is over. Dan Slott gets a lot of credit for writing terrific stories using a single Peter in the past couple of years.

I don't think Slott's writing matters at all in regard to the Marriage debate. His stories could have/would have been just as good if Peter were married. That's the whole problem... the marriage has nothing to do with quality of books, it's the writer that makes it good regardless.

I'm not surprised by the results... most people that read or have read Spider-Man grew up with a married one, so the votes will go that way...

However, it'd be interesting to see how many people voted "married" that have read little to no stories post-OMD... if you take those peopel out of the equation...
