Chapter 51 - "Cold Wars" Discussion Thread 2/23/09

I honestly don't think there is any benefit to outting Nathan.....yet. Yes his secret will be out and he may very well become one of the hunted but I don't think it is gonna stop them from being rounded up.

Sigh, this episode started out really good...but then we didn't really learn anything about HRG that we didn't already know for about 45 minutes or so. Then at the end, we find out that Daphne is alive and he is working with Angela, which I suppose is an okay twist.

Then they had to once again create a plot about a city getting blown up by a super powered individual. Really? Again? And you know the paintings are going to be misleading and somehow come back to Sylar. I guarantee it. Sigh...do the writers really have nothing else in their arsenal? 3 of the 4 volumes now have had a plot arc of a city being blown up. I'm really disappointed by this.

Also, I like that they did it in a unique way other than someone time traveling...but can we PLEASE have just one season that evolves naturally and organically without the obligatory flash back episode? First time or two it was cool. Now it is feeling formulaic and tired.

In this episodes defense however, it finally got right what Heroes has been doing wrong. It had a tight knit and focused plot. No ******** Sylar substory. No Claire getting into trouble or wacky antics of Hiro and Ando. Just focus on the main story line with no diversions. Of course, this in turn underlines the show's main problem even more.

Not to mention Nathan's probably the only factor keeping The Hunter and his men from just simply shooting to kill, instead of capturing them--although TH looks like he's intent on going around Nathan on that one.

I'm all for HRG; I still think he's a BAMF. However, I would like to see some changes...the "I'm all and only about protecting my daughter" bit is getting dated, in the same way as Claire's complaining about being useless. Less of the angsty struggle to play Dad, and more of the commitment to being bad*** HRG. I realize that protecting Claire is part of his intentions/motivations as a character, but I have to roll my eyes every time they rehash that played out explanation.

What about Lyle...haha. In his mind, he's definitely only got one kid.
I might like to see Claire die and HRG become the vengeful, sadistic bastard that he hints at.

I was also surprised about the revelation that Nathan ultimate goal is to find a way to eliminate abilities altogether. It seems contrary to the fact that he wanted to carry out his father's goal of giving everyone abilities last season, unless of course I'm misreading it and that Nathan wants to eliminiate abilities from some while letting others have theirs.

It's a direct continuation of that subplot. Back then, his aim was for everyone to gain powers so that more good could be accomplished. But during that season, he realized that abuse of the powers would cause greater harm. Hence, he made a total reversal and decided that it'd be much simpler to simply remove powers altogether.

I was also a bit surprising that MohinDUH! knew about the crackdown on specials weeks before but didn't say anything because he didn't trust HRG. Not to mention that, on a subconcious level, he wanted to be caught to pay for his sins from last volume.

Well, it does explain why he was so quick on the uptake and knew they were going to kidnap him.

The one character, however, who seems completely one-dimensional is Mr. Danko. Oh sure, he wants to hunt down the specials because he considers them threats on the same level as terrorists, but there's got to be more to it than that it would seem to me.

To be fair, this episode was centered more on HRG than on Danko. Important revelations about him would be better timed for episodes more focused on Danko. Even then, there are some slight hints into his background, such as when he told HRG not to presume to know anything about him with regards to his awareness about people with power.

My theory is that Danko definitely knew about the powers for awhile. Perhaps someone in his family had them and he became jealous of him/her or perhaps he was wronged by someone with powers.

And you know the paintings are going to be misleading and somehow come back to Sylar. I guarantee it.

When we were shown the paintings I immediately thought "It may look like Matt blows up the Capital but it's really Sylar and his radiation power."

I'm hoping Sylar doesn't blow it up. I'm hoping Doyle is controlling Matt and making him Blow up the Capital.

I might like to see Claire die and HRG become the vengeful, sadistic bastard that he hints at.

Hell yeah. I want to see him less conflicted--let's see him go dark 100%.

This episode was pretty awesome. Finally HRG does has different motivation than protecting Claire. it seems like he's on the heroes' side. By the way, BEST PETER EVER! He kicked ass with only the ability to fly.

It was an ok episode. But the whole blow up the city...been there, done that. And the constant capturing/escaping of the same people is old. I want some Micah and Molly. And I wouldnt be opposed to some new charecters if they can make them interesting. Right now would be the best time to introduce them.

Well they kinda hafta take the apocalyptic route...just to give the finale a bang

No Sylar. No Claire. No Hiro.

This episode could have been trash yet still been the best of the Volume so far on the strength of those facts alone. But I was pleasantly surprised that it turned out pretty darn good.

I do like however, that there is more to HRG than "I want to protect my daughter". Almost like he does what he does moreso on a personal level than anything else. He likes the action. And it furthers his comfort in the morally gray area.

I liked this episode. As others have stated the complete lack of Claire and Hiro was really refreshing and shows that this series really needs to get rid of those characters or evolve them into people who don´t annoy the heck out of everyone.

Washington exploding.... This plotline has been done before but hopefully there is a different twist to it. If that painting is accurate then it isn´t Matt with a few sticks of dynamite that causes it. My guess is that Ando supercharges Peter for some reason which causes all of Peters powers to come flooding back ten times as powerful and he loses control.

I hope they actually blow up the city btw, it´s about time one of these disasters actually happens just so that we, the viewers, don´t just assume that everything is going to be ok.

i liked The whole Episode... then.... we see the same plot from season 1  i get that they are trying to get fans back by giving us season 1 quality... but give us the same plot devices and another explosion? Really??

But Peter has blown up before, right? Just sayin'. And I agree that we have yet to really see Ando's power in action, beyond use on Daphne.

I think it would be a great set-up for next season if they actually did blow up the city...especially if it's rather the result of the humans being at war with the heroes--someone in gov't tries to take drastic measures to get rid of everyone, etc. Just so long as they go about it in a way that's different than what we've already seen.

I'm kind of hoping that it gets explained that no matter what they do, the timeline will "correct" itself. Every future they have seen so far has had some kind of major disaster, and no matter what they do, this is what the timeline wants. Hopefully, this also leads into what was "Five Years Gone" since, as it was pointed out, a lot of parallels have appeared already.

Unfortunately, I am not sure if the show is sophisticated enough to try this approach. :o

Im so happy Angela is creeping back in power again. Although we should have seen it coming she is the only person Noah is loyal to. (i think)
hopefully the Haitan will team up with them. and theyll become the powerful 3 and take down the government and Nathan.

I've always been a fan of Angela...and the actress Christine Rose is just excellent. You're never 100% sure what her motives are. She's still standing...I'd be really surprised if they offed her for some reason. Then again, weirder things can happen...

Well, if they're trying to restore things back to season 1, here's hoping HRG will regain his one, true partner; the Haitian. And somehow get Eden resurrected too. :woot:

Ok....i thought peter could only hold one ability at a time? last i checked he had super speed didnt he? or wotever it wasnt flying.

also......it takes a lot for me to say this cos i love this show but AGAIN with the blowing stuff up future thing..........man stop rolling the ball and get another toy jeezzus

I really think that this is the case. That a major event MUST happen that forces the world to be a certain way. The Heroes can only prolong it so much. Something's gotta blow up.

And then it would really be interesting to see the events unfold afterwards...good set-up for next season

im gonna have to watch the last episode before this again, i dont remember them even comming into contact again.

I know this is Chapter 51's thread so forgive me if I'm jumping ahead--can't keep track. But it's
after the plane crash when Tracy tries to trade Peter for her freedom, and it backfires--Nathan comes with the Hunter and HRG, then Peter jumps out of hiding and grabs Nathan. Peter then flies away, presumably after acquiring Nathan's power.

Why did Peter and Matt go back to Issac's loft.

If theyre on the run... wouldnt that be the first place Nathan would look or at least have camera set up in there?
