Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk" (July 21, 2017) - Part 2

I do think the fact this is a WW2 film with a non-american focus impacted the Box Office a bit.

If not for Nolan I'm not even sure what % of Americans would be interested in seeing a film on the battle of Dunkirk?

The opening is almost entirely because of Nolan. He has become a legitimate draw at the box office.

The group behind me in line last night seemed to be casual Nolanites. I asked them if they had seen Memento and they raved about it. I told them he is doing something similar to that on a $150m budget. That got them even more pumped up to see it. :woot:

If this film had been on D-Day or Iwo Jima it'd probably open to 60 million+

Even Interstellar was so "nolanesque" and one could easily say it did not need to be. But it was.

That doesn't make any sense. I'm not sure what point you're making here.

It was "Nolan-esque" (meaning: long, mind-bending, elaborate, complex, dense) because it was a sci-fi film and because Nolan wanted it to be that way. Otherwise, it wouldn't have been.

And yet still, it's gonna make more opening weekend than Interstellar, a sci-pi picture starring, Matthew Mchchchch (don't know how to spell his name), who is like, America personified.

When they said 75% of this movie was shot on 70mm IMAX film, they were not kidding or exaggerating. It actually feels like a higher percentage while watching it.

But the transition to 5 perf is far more noticeable. Because the color timing is rather off. If the Academy wants to ignore Hoytema for whatever reason, this ought to be a good one.

Wait, so the other kid is Harry Styles? And here I thought the kid we see the most (who is effectively the main character, as it were) was Harry. I also at some point thought George was Harry.

Mind blown.

So, this is how I felt about Dunkirk. "You expect Christopher Nolan, he's one of the greatest directors, just knock it out of a park" and it ended up to be like 3/5 instead of 6/5. So there are people sharing my sentiment regarding this film, I thought I was totally crazy or something.

I get what Consona is saying. This film has different kind of strengths than his other films. It's not for every taste, and even though I loved the film I believe it's score will diminish a bit once a broader audience goes to see the film.

Also, yes, I still don't know which kid is Styles.

You're not crazy. It's going to be a divisive movie. Some will love it and some won't. I'm just amazed the studio gave him this much control of the project.

Can we give Nolan some credit over [BLACKOUT]making the torpedoes look as frightening as the shark from Jaws?[/BLACKOUT] Some great direction there.

Well, judging by reviews there's nothing divisive about this film. It has similar score to Apocalypse Now, Platoon, Deer Hunter and other great war films.

I let out a loud "Holy ****" when i saw that. Lord. This really did feel like a horror movie inside the body of a war film, which is just a perfect mixing of two genres when you think about it.

Yeah, that torpedo scene was incredible. [blackout]Night, soldiers crying for help in the darkness and then...[/blackout]

Trying to get tickets for Sunday only for Fandango's site to not load the seat choices. Frustrating. Anything like this happen to people before? I just get a big white blank spot.

Are you using their website or an app? If the former, use the latter. The website sucks.

I was using the website, yeah. I've never had that problem before with the seat options not loading. But then I did think "let's try the app," and bingo.

Sunday night seats were fuller than I expected. I was hoping there wouldn't be much sold, but I got something decent.

I kind of think of Dunkirk as being Nolan most cinematic film-- in the sense that it was made, conceived, and best viewed in a cinema, and most especially in an IMAX. This feels like a movie designed from the ground up to immerse you heart and soul with a screen that will fill every inch of your vision and a sound system that will make you jump at rifle shots and cower before a Stuka's scream. It's cinematography, effects, soundtrack, and characters are all designed to put you at Dunkirk, in desperate straits with sea foam piling up at your feet.

It's amazing on the Imax. I don't think it will really work on any kind of home entertainment screen, because none of it was designed for a home screen. Maybe a good comparison would be to say that it's another Nolan masterpiece, but while his other works are more akin to paintings with beautiful colors, copious details, and multiple subjects, this is a marble statue. It needs to be seen and experienced the way the artist intended, and while it's in some ways simpler in terms of color and subject, it has extra dimensions.

If you live in a state with a genuine IMAX screen, see this film. Because this probably won't be worth it on DVD or Blu-ray, but you might never see something like this again if you miss it now.

Enriquespy, redfirebird2008. Thanks guys. I was starting to feel like a total troll and idiot. :woot:

Glad some people enjoyed it tremendously, to me, it was far from god-Nolan level of awesome.

I think I'll watch it again. This time in LieMAX.

This is insane.

Supermarine is my favorite but the way the music just lets go of tension and becomes that different melody in 'Home' the second
Brannagh saw those boats
was so moving

Supermarine is still the best. :) For me anyway. But the soundtrack overall was really great and enhanced the experience.
