Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk" (July 21, 2017) - Part 3

According Japanese BO experts, Dunkirk is outpacing Interstellar and it can open to twice the OW of Interstellar. Plus War films generally perform well in Japan, especially if they're related to World War II, and well-received ones often develop great legs. Dunkirk can finish with (25-30) million in Japan if the reception is stellar. A holiday week (Silver Week) is coming up in two weeks time which can provide a nice impetus for the box office.

My gut tells me Interstellar probably wouldn't have earned a hell of a lot more even with WB, I think the film was just a bit too hit and miss for it to have done much better than what it did.

Interstellar was not a divisive movie. It wasn't much of a hit and miss with the GA. Among movies opening in November only a few managed better legs than Interstellar apart from animations like Rise of the Guardians, Wreck It Ralph, Frozen or Moana and the latter two were Wednesday releases so they don't even count in normal Friday opening calculations. The movies which managed a better multiplier than Interstellar are Life of Pi, Flight, Unstoppable, Hugo (limited release) etc. There are other movies if we go further back (before 2010s) but they weren't openers with a substantial OW during the Fall season. The legs of Interstellar were absolutely fantastic because connected with the GA.

The responsibility of the WB marketing team would have been just to provide a better opening. WB already managed that with more high concept (Sci-Fi thriller) movie In Gravity a year before. Plus WB could have used the names attached to the movie like Nolan, McConaughey and Hathway more effectively than Paramount. WB and Nolan is a killer combination and there's no denying it. I think WB could have ensured a slightly better opening. Interstellar was a mid range opener in November so it had the holiday legs to boost it's BO but Interstellar did not reach the saturation point when it came to legs or the final figure so a with a slightly bigger opening and similar legs, it most likely would have made more in the domestic BO. Still there's no way to know and Paramount did very well at the end of the day so no point in arguing about this.

Between originally planning to shoot his experiential World War II thriller without a script and (probably unknowingly) using prison labor to build some of the sets, Christopher Nolan went all out on “Dunkirk.” As revealed at a press conference in Toronto today, he even avoided the use of green screens.

“When those boys are out there on those beaches and explosions are going off, they’re going off,” said Nolan while presenting his film at TIFF. “There’s no green screen. They’re in it.” The film was shot on location in France, where the evacuation depicted in his film took place.

“You could make a period perfect CG version [of a ship], but it wouldn’t feel as real,” Nolan added. “We felt that the matchup, the patina that computer graphics have is a very poor match for this kind of imagery from World War II.”

Dunkirk box office passes the $500 million mark worldwide

Warner Bros. Pictures’ epic action thriller Dunkirk crossed the $500 million mark at the worldwide box office today, it was announced by Sue Kroll, President of Worldwide Marketing and Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures. The film cost about $100 million to make.

Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, Dunkirk shot to the top of the box office in July. It went on to be one of the biggest hits of the crowded summer season and continues to draw audiences the world over. It is also one if the year’s most critically-acclaimed films, earning rapturous praise from critics around the globe.

Kroll stated, “Christopher Nolan has proven why he is regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers of our time. His ‘Dunkirk’ is an absolute tour de force—a harrowing, emotional and sweeping moviegoing experience that pushes the boundaries of mainstream studio filmmaking. Through Chris’s lens, ‘Dunkirk’ does more than capture this pivotal moment in time; it reminds us of both the heroism and the human toll of war. We are so proud of this film and congratulate Chris, Emma Thomas, the cast, and all the talented people who helped bring this monumental achievement to the screen.”

In making Dunkirk, Nolan utilized a mixture of IMAX and 65mm film to capture the action from land, sea and air. Much of the film was also shot on the beaches of Dunkirk, France, where the events unfolded.

Oscar voters are about to be offered the full Dunkirk experience right in the comfort of their own home.

Deadline has learned that a letter is going out to the 8,427 members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences offering them a specially made screener in 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray of Christopher Nolan’s war epic. This is the first time a studio has gone this far in terms of Academy screeners, and it makes sense that it is for a Nolan film. It was for the director’s 2008 The Dark Knight that a special Blu-ray disc was offered as an option for the first time to Academy members who could play the then-relatively new format.

Now Warners is making the same deal for Dunkirk except the ante has been upped. In its email to Oscar voters, the studio warns them they must first have a 4K Ultra HD TV with HDR as well as an Ultra HD Blu-ray player in order to play the disc. “If you have the screening ability to play this format, please opt in by October 31, 2017,” the email states, further explaining that 4K provides “a high-quality experience that allows you to view the sharpest picture, richest color and most dynamic contrast you can get on your home entertainment system”. In other words, putting it all in geek speak, this is the best way to see a unique motion picture experience like Dunkirk in your living room with the blockbuster’s total resolution of 26.5 trillion pixels. Just how many members have this capacity at this point is the big question, but if any group was likely to have an outsized number of people who do have this capability, it is probably the well-heeled Academy.

It’s a smart move by Warners. By subliminally reminding members of the unique quality of Dunkirk simply by offering to supply it in a home viewing format like 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, the studio has established a nice beachhead in the competition that will set it apart from the crowd.

So where is that blu-ray anyhow?

Out November? December?

Looks like a nice set to own if you don't already have those films, only way I'm rebuying these though is if we get commentary on them by Nolan.

Seven Christopher Nolan films are coming to 4K in December.

In an early announcement to retailers Warner Bros. is prepping a Christopher Nolan Collection for 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray on December 19. The box set will include Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Interstellar, The Prestige, Inception, and Dunkirk for a suggested retail price of $149.99.

In addition, Warner Bros. will release Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Inception, and Dunkirk as separate 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs as well. Likewise, a Dark Knight Trilogy box set will be available for a suggested retail price of $70.99 (though Best Buy currently lists it as $89.99). Meanwhile, Disney will offer The Prestige as a separate 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and Paramount will offer Interstellar as a separate 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray.

"4K Ultra HD with HDR is an incredibly exciting new home video format that allows a much closer recreation of viewing the original film print," said Christopher Nolan. "The deeper color palette comes closer to matching the analogue colors of film and we’ve restored the original theatrical mixes for this release. If you can't rewatch these films in the theater, this is the best experience you can have in your own home."

All of the films will feature 2160p video with HDR and DTS-HD MA soundtracks. Blu-ray discs with the seven movies in HD along with behind-the-scenes content and special features will be included as well.

I'll wait until they pack in all of his films.

I'll wait until they pack in all of his films.

They can't. Memento is owned by Sony Pictures and Following is owned by Criterion. And WB isn't likely to do a UHD release of Insomnia unless Nolan pushes WB to make one.

Oh man, that last track in the video is just amazing. Heard it first in one of Interstellar trailers.

Waiting to get Dunkirk Blu-Ray in December. Christmas comes early with that and Last Jedi :yay:

I want to sit through a Nolan marathon now after watching that trailer.

Dunkirk was awesome! And about time for Nolan's greatest hits!!

I'm totally doing a Batman UHD marathon. I was holding off watching TDKT for more than year now to make the experience as fresh as possible.

I won't buy the set, but I'll buy Batman, Dunkirk and Inception separately.

I COULD use an excuse to actually finish The Prestige for once...

I hope the 4K release involves a remastered version of Batman Begins and TDK. The Batman Begins Blu-ray has a very low bitrate and the image is pretty soft. TDK on the other hand features a lot of edge enhancement and also the color-timing seems off compared to theatrical version of the film. Maybe they will fix these issues in the 4K versions. At a bare minimum, there will be a much stronger bitrate for Batman Begins.
