I don't think the Infinity War movies will be well received... If they think Civil War is stuffed wait until those two movies come out. I can already see the "overstuffed" criticism now. Anything above 80% on those would be phenomenal.

Yeah that's my biggest concern about those movies.

The amount of characters in this is such a lame nitpick it's a CBM based on a story arc that had a lot of characters appear. The guy is literally nitpicking about Spider-Man and Ant-Man being in this movie, every other hero has appeared before and in the case of Black Panther he was a huge part of the storyline.

I mean I honestly don't get how this guy gives it a rotten based on that but gives "Furious 7" and "DofP" fresh ratings and doesn't utter a peep about the number of characters.

Dammit, someone posted the 7th rotten and the 1st Top critic rotten

Bragging just a bit - see how many franchise characters we've got, DC? - Marvel practically doubles the number of superheroes for this movie. And it's too much.

Fine the movie is not for him, but the criticism that Marvel is bragging about how many characters they have to DC sounds like someone projecting his own biases onto the film.

You mean Marvel starting their universe in 2008 only to have their character roster grow like the comics....HOW DARE THEY!!!

Not Marvel's fault DC took forever to build their own universe. Especially for a company that owns all of their characters(unlike Marvel).

Like I said before, the longer the MCU goes on the tougher it's going to be to keep it all fresh for critics and attain the kind of critical acclaim that movies like Iron Man received 8 years ago when it was all shiny and new. I think the solo movies like Black Panther and Doctor Strange will have no trouble since they're new characters but the ensemble pieces are going to have their work cut out for them to be even more inventive than what came before. That's going to be the test of all tests for the Russos.

That's why they got the Russos signed up for Civil War and both Infinity War movies. From what I've heard it seems like they're handling the job well. 94% with the first 100 & change reviews in is a stellar accomplishment.

The New Republic (the newspaper, not the one from Star Wars) gave a positive review. They are a Top Critic.

Agreed. Some reviewers will have their review half written before they see the film when they hear about how many characters are involved. I'd be very happy with 80% for those films while I'd look for more from solo films.

I guess some of these people really need to read a comic book.

It's not always Superman vs. Luthor, Batman vs. Joker or Spider-Man vs. Green Goblin. Sometimes there's a s' load of characters on the pages at the same time.

Yeah it's Rainman-level impressive, lol

The 'too much' comment was valid for AoU but with CW there is a clear through line with regardless to plot and character progression for the main character (Captain America). And scenes that were set up in the beginning of the movie was paid off in end of the movie.
'Too much' a lazy criticism.

Sadly most of these reviewers are also the ones tired of cbms.

Yep. Although I think having too many characters in general (not just in CBMs) is a dealbreaker for some reviewers. It's like breaking a longstanding rule of film for them. I mean it can genuinely often cause problems but I think CW shows that with the right writers and directors even a huge cast can be handled well with focus given to the main characters of the story and small rewarding arcs given to the supporting guys. And in terms of action, spectacle and scale, which are important elements of blockbusters whatever reviewers say, recreating those double page spreads from comics is hard to beat.

Too many characters is always a problem for me if there is no focus.
But there are some great ensemble movies. Are there too many characters in Usual Suspects? Magnificent Seven? A dozen other classic movies with a huge ensemble?

Named Characters in Civil War: 24
compared to
Named Characters in The Godfather II: 32

and that 67 characters thing was a joke anyway
given how capable the Russos have proven, I'm not really worried for Infinity War

It depends on how it's done.

TLS has one of the worst battle scenes with the X-Men battling "unknown" mutants.

CW will be one of the best group battles in the CB genre. Granted it's a limited quantity as it's been usually one on one or groups vs. drones/unknown mutants.

It's basically movie critic snobbishness

"It may work in your nerdy comic books but in the movie business sticking a bunch of your characters on screen doesn't"

::Proceeds to give the Fast and Furious movies Fresh Ratings::

Yep, if there's not sufficient focus on the most important character/characters and their story, the film has probably failed regardless of how many other characters there might be. Good examples.

I think they've proven beyond doubt they can handle large ensemble films. Also I think reviewers and many fans seem to give a pass to many classics with loads of characters in comparison with supporting characters in CBMs who happen to be superheroes. Just because the 12th character on the cast list in a CBM is a superhero doesn't mean they deserve any more focus than the 12th character on the Godfather cast list who might me someone's uncle. Noone claims that the uncle gets the shaft even if they get little screen time.

Plus it's unique because outside of a few characters, most of the ones in CW have previously been introduced. It is a whole different animal.
