Clerks sucks

The thing is, guys like Kevin Smith are giving alternative filmmaking a go (y'know, actual dialogue as opposed to car chases, ridiculous romances, explosions and aliens), and all bashing does is remind Hollywood that all we really want is Aliens vs Predator 2.

Are you serious?!? Can you possibly mean what you say here?? What a dumb thing to say. Seriously. "Don't bash independent movies! Evil Hollywood will take over!".

I will critic what I consider bad movies all I like and there is nothing you can do about it. Just because a movie is made independently doesn't mean it's automatically good.

What you said is kinda like saying "Oh, don't say that disabled dude is a complete *******, even though he is", or "hey, don't say that artist draws badly, even though he does, because at least he isn't a sellout professional artist".

What the hell are you talking about??

it hurts to agree with Kd.
Kevin Smith's dialogue is unbearable.
He's a cool guy (when he can keep himself from making unfunny, creepy gay jokes that seem to indicate that 88% of his day is spent obsessing over men ******ing eachother, etc.), but GOD he is the worst writer, :down

What do you know about writing? Gay jokes are funny.

I've liked all of Kevin Smith View Askew movies, especially how each pokes fun at a seperate subject, but at the same time feel connected. However, I can see why someone might not like Clerks, it's completely dialouge driven, there's no real plot, so if you don't like the dialouge and/or the characters you're not gonna like the movie. The "you don't get it" argument is ridiculous, you can get something and still not like it, for example I "get" what Fight Club is about and don't like the movie.

As for the Aliasman's comments about Dogma for a damn moron. Should a person's profession determine what faith she can belive? The character was a catholic that totally lost her way. Jesus having brothers and sisters doesn't seem very far fetched, do you really think a husband and wife would never have sex, that sounds very far fetched. Also, Ben Affeleck and Matt Damon's angels weren't corrupted, the were disallusioned, there's a difference. Kevin Smith actually went to one of the protests for the movie as a protestor, to see what in the movie offended people and none of them even saw it, they protested simply because it raised questions they didn't want to think about. Blind Christains really piss me off, having been rasied as a Christain, I think the concept is good, but there are still questions and I feel you can ask those questions and be a Christain.

don't you know that asking questions can get you straight to hell?

First off Kevin Smith and Quentin Tarrantino are both in the same boat, there movies about movies. The only differencei s Kevin Smith does it through dialouge while Tarrantino does it through camera shots and things of that nature.

It sounds to me though you went in expecting something other than what you got.

Pretty much sums it. When It came out I loved it

1-Fine, I give in, "Dogma" repescts the Catholic religion.

But I didn't know that. You did, though.

And is that enough reason for calling me a moron and a preachy tightass? Just because you know more about movies than me?

I think you need to start respecting people.

2-About "Clerks", it's a cult movie.

Cult movies, by the very definition of the word, have fanboys worshipping them. And fanboys can be very adamantand tough when defending their movie (I should know, I get very pissed-off when someone criticizes the Gremlins movies).

Now, I haven't seen it, so I can say that the movie is eit good or bad. I can say this:

a-Most people here think "you don't get it because you were never a clerk/cashier. I have, so I get it.", and that's a load of bullcrap. Do you need to be as cop to understand the "Lethal Weapon" movies? Do you need to be a firefighter to understand "Ladder 49"? Hell, do you even need to be Asian to understand all the Takashi Miike movies?

If someone doesn't "get it", it's because the plot is too complicated or they have diffrent taste in movies, NOT because they were never clerks.

b-And you can't say "it must be good because all independent cinema is good". Did you know that "Critters 3", "Catwoman" and "Mac and Me" were independent movies?

Just because a movie is independent doesn't mean it's good.

Well this is my story.

I was just bored one day and turned on the boob tube like I usually do. I was just a kid. i've never had a job nor thought about what it was like to have one at that point. I watched this stupid looking movie and lmao because I found it funny and weird, two things I liked a lot. I was a fan. No hype bull****, no cult. it's just me liking a movie I saw on tv one day. When I became a clerk , i got a deeper understanding of it. That's all.

The line was cut out. It was actually an omage to another film.

Oh. Didn't know that. I thought God didn't talk because our puny brains are incapable of comprahending God's voice, so our heads would just explode.

God doesn't NEED to talk in His one, true voice. He can just mimic any normal human voice.

God talked in "Bruce Almighty", and Jim Carrey didn't explode.

God talked in "Monty PYthon and the Holy Grail", and King Arthur and his knights didn't explode.

Hell, God talked to Moses in the Bible, and HE didn't explode.

I agree. Notice that I specified, his "unfunny, creepy" gay jokes, such as when Mark Hammil interviews him on Comicbook the movie.

THAT sounds like sacrilege and blasphemy. And Kevin Smith has no bussiness messing with the Catholics.
It's all very sacreligious and blasphemous. And Kevin Smith has just as much a right to mess with Catholicism as anyone, if not more since he is/was one.
Who the f*** are you to think that you have any business messing with Kevin Smith?

And just because a movie is good, it doesn't mean everybody will like it.

Independant movies are generally the best because they don't have the studio coming and saying what can be shown and what can't...the filmmakers have complete control over what they want...check out independant movies that are loved by heaps:

Clerks
Halloween
Thirteen
Napoleon Dynamite

just to name a few

One of the reasons it was taken out. They make fun of it on the technical commentary.

I think it's a fine movie, even though I can understand why it can get trashed easily.

I understand that people are turned of by the non-sequitor dialogue and the non-linear plot, but then that was the point that the director was trying to make. A day in a clerk's life is boring, and the need for human companionship, someone to truly communicate with about anything, even about the trivial and the mundane, to stay in touch.

And the episodic structure was intentional. Smith loosely based Clerks on The Divine Comedy by Dante Aligheri (hence the protagonist's name). The Comedy is also episodic, a look at what lies within the nine circles of Hell. The episodes in the movie all refer to one of the circles; the anti-smoking guy is a "righteous heathen" (the first circle), the "**** mopper" scene (the second circle holding the lustful), Randall tipping over the coffin (The sixth circle tormenting the heretics), Randall lying about Dante's fidelity (the ninth circle which punishes the treacherous), etc.

But, I understand that episodic structure doesn't appeal to everyone, and arguments over taste are uniformly futile, so I'll stop.

I hate Kevin Smith, I've got no respect for him. Go rot.
