Cloverfield Director To Remake Let The Right One In

I'm going to agree with you guys on one thing, it's just wrong that Case39 opened above the movie because that movie is awful. I mean it's one of the worse of the year awful.

Yep, unfortunately in our movie-going culture, name recognition appears to be everything. No one cares that Renee Zellweger and Bradley Cooper can barely even remember filming Case 39 because of how long it's been on the shelf due to awfulness - they just care that they're in it. Not some no-name kids and a couple of actors who look vaguely familiar.

To be fair, it also did terribly. I mean 5mil is a terrible opening weekend number for a movie in so many theaters.

True, I'm just trying to rationalize why anyone would go see it, lol.

On another note, normally with movies I have an interest in, I make a point to watch interviews/press on opening week, but I didn't see any for Let Me In (not surprising considering the scale/studio). So out of curiosity, I just did a YouTube search and found a couple of bits of promotion that flew by me last week. Here are some interviews, for anyone interested:

Chloe on Last Call with Carson Daly:

Kodi and Matt Reeves at Fantastic Fest:

I thought it was a wonderful scene. Incredibly brutal scene, too. The implied rape really makes the scene horrifying. I understand why Reeves said he cut it though. With me, If I could have kept the scene in, I would have. The "rape" idea, atleast in this scene, and in general, is what really makes the vampire scary to me, that the vampire is essentially an undead rapist. And this scene would have really added an extra impact to that.

I was thinking the same thing. Lately there seems to be this idea that being attacked by a vampire is like making love. It is absolutely "rape" though.

It's happened before. The Shawshank Redemption was #9 its first week of wide release ($2.4 million) and was beaten out by Wes Craven's New Nightmare and Exit to Eden (with Dan Aykroyd and Rosie O'Donnell).

Nice to see those videos. (I knew Reeves was a Hitchcock fan!) I guess Hammer films couldn't give much of a push for it.

Here's something funny that was posted on IMDB:

RELEASE OF ACTUALLY GOOD VAMPIRE MOVIE MAKES AUDIENCES SICK OF VAMPIRE MOVIES FOR SOME REASON

This weekend brought a particularly strange box-office report: a vampire movie performed poorly.

Box-office experts were stunned upon recieving this news. So far, they have not confirmed any single explanation for the event, but many theories are pointing to the fact that it was because the movie was actually good.

The movie, "Let Me In," a remake of the swedish hit "Let the Right One In" was expected to debut within the moderate vampire movie range of $20-140 million, but ended up scoring only about $6 million.

"It just doesn't make sense," said one box office analyst. "We're in the middle of the biggest vampire revolution the world of entertainment has ever witnessed, AND it was a remake. How could this happen?" Many analysts shared his opinions on this bizarre occurrence, saying things such as, "What the hell?", "Holy *beep* and "Well, duh, Cloverfield sucked."

The trend of vampire movies over the past few years has had Hollywood dying to sink their teeth into just about anything vampire-related and turn it into a mediocre movie or TV show. Just as long as it ended up being bad. But "Let Me In" was different.

"I knew I smelled trouble from the time we signed Matt Reeves on to direct that we were headed for failure," said the head of distributor Overture pictures, "but we kept our faith in him that he could prove us wrong and make a truly lame film." That turned out to be a big mistake when young child actress Chloe Grace Moretz was signed on to play the role of Abby, the young vampire protagonist.

Fresh off a wave of acclaim for her turn as a pint-sized assassin in "Kick-Ass", Moretz threatened to derail the entire project when the studio feared that the movie might end up suffering from surprisingly good performances, rather than adhering to the soap opera-grade level of acting that has brought Hollywood such great success over the years, as a result of her talent.

From that point forward, the studio watched in horror as Reeves proceeded to hire more actually-good actors, such as Richard Jenkins, Elias Koteas, and young Kodi Smit-McPhee of "The Road." With each passing day, Reeves also jeapordized Hollywood's legacy of *beep* remakes by staying true to the original film.

"The guy would just walk on set like he owned the place, and instead of having the kid take his shirt off or look at Moretz with emotionless eyes, he told him to let her show him how to play a *beep* Rubik's Cube. Who the hell is this guy? Does he know nothing about making vampire movies?" said the head of Overture.

All they could do from then was pray that things would turn out okay upon the film's release. But early great reviews were coming in fast, and hope started to diminish. "It's all over. No one's gonna want to make a vampire movie ever again after this. And it's all our fault."

how come Chloe looks so much older then when she promoted Kick Ass? KA was in april right?
is this because of make up? becuase she looks like she is 4 years older then in april.

Growth spurt. But yes, it's partially because of make-up and I'm sure the haircut has something to do with it, too. You're right, though, she's definitely grown a lot over the last year - if you compare the videos from Comic-Con 2009 when she was promoting Kick-Ass to Comic-Con 2010 for Let Me In, it's particularly shocking:

There were no hot vampires, that's why. If there is no one for the girls to relate to or ogle, it ain't gonna take.

This doesn't make any sense...

In what could've been the film's greatest challenge, the original "Let the Right One In" (above) was released just two years ago, meaning the specialty audience that would've normally come out had, in a sense, already seen it.

...Unless they are claiming this story has a microscopic audience.

Let the Right One In only made $2.1 million in the US and $9 million OS. No one really saw it.

Thanks. I watched most of them. Matt Reeves such enthusiasm for this and love for the material...I'm very sad it bombed. And for the record Moretz is a complete professional she has already mastered the fake friendly banter with interviewers. She is very well prepared for a long career in making movies.

Glad you liked it. Have you watched the deleted scene that was just posted? It really adds to the movie after you've seen it, imo.
That must have gotten by me, thank you so much for pointing it out to me. It really does add to the movie, I enjoyed this a bit more than Let the Right One In. But they're both incredible in their own right.

:woot:

Finished the novel... it was great, but I think I actually like the movie more.

Im sure the author of the novel adored the fact this bombed. He didn't want it remade in the first place.

I'm pretty sure that is 100% wrong, I can't find it, but I'm pretty sure the author said he was stoked to have 2 good movies made off his book.

Reeves said that the author liked hes movie.

now we know that the general public doesnt care about this kind of movies. to bad.

Yeah, Lindqvist was thrilled with this movie.

I might just be the luckiest writer alive. To have not only one, but two excellent versions of my debut novel done for the screen feels unreal. 'Let the Right One In' is a great Swedish movie. 'Let Me In' is a great American movie.

There are notable similarities, and the spirit of Tomas Alfredson is present. But 'Let Me In' puts the emotional pressure in different places and stands firmly on its own legs. Like the Swedish movie, it made me cry, but not at the same points. 'Let Me In' is a dark and violent love story, a beautiful piece of cinema and a respectful rendering of my novel for which I am grateful. Again.

Now, Tomas Alfredson, the director of LTROI, is the one who didn't want it remade. But I doubt he gets much happiness from its bombing, considering when all is said and done, it will still have been seen in theaters by many more people than his film was. And at the same time, it's turning people onto his version who might otherwise have never even heard of it, which I think everyone can agree is a good thing.

Also, Reeves tweeted a new quote from Stephen King:

LET ME IN is a genre-busting triumph. Not just a horror film, but the best American horror film in the last 20 years. Whether you're a teenager or a film-lover in your 50s, you'll be knocked out. Rush to it now. You can thank me later.

You're right, It was the original's director that didn't want it remade.

The fact that this is damn near a shot for shot remake completely disqualifies it. If this had been an original film I would inclined to agree, but it isn't. I'd put Clive Barker's Dread ahead of this.
