Cloverfield sequel in the works

Cloverfield Paradox retconned that initial origin and it's just one of that movie's massive flaws.

I'm pretty sure they'll stick with the original explanation of him being from the pre-historic times and in hibernation. They also could tie in some stuff from the Cloverfield Kishin manga which hinted at Clover eggs resting in the deep ocean.

I still remember watching the first Transformers movie and that teaser that played before it. Me and my grandpa as well as the rest of the audience was like wtf but was also like I need to see that movie. Just a fantastic tease that they don’t do anymore.

Yes, I too remember seeing that teaser in the theater. I forget what movie we were there to see.. it may have been Transformers also.. I just remember as we were walking out the movie that we PAID to see, everyone was talking about that teaser. It hooked everyone.

Now I'm just wondering if this thing truly gets going, what will the teaser trailer be like and how will they handle the viral marketing?

Whatever they come up with I doubt they will be able to top the original in terms of viral marketing. TDK and Cloverfield had some of the best viral marketing campaigns ever, but those days are so far behind us IMO.

Everything has just become too dependent on social media nowadays, but I guess they could still come up with something cool to do with that angle.

Lane was better than the original from an acting point of view, but the nonstop thrill of the first was great. I'd like to see a combination of these two elements for the direct sequel, which I'm curious how they're going to handle with NYC presumably destroyed by the end of the first.

I'm kind of in a "I will believe it when I see it phase."

I don't really even consider 10 Cloverfield Lane or The Cloverfield Paradox sequels really. If this is a direct sequel to the original, we'll see if it actually happens. Thus far they are only writing the script. I want to see if it actually gets past the script stage.

Babak Anvari is a solid choice, loved Under the Shadow (Wounds not as much).

EXCLUSIVE: Following the success of Top Gun: Maverick and Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Paramount Pictures is looking to get the wheels turning on another popular franchise as sources tell Deadline a new Cloverfield pic is in the works with Babak Anvari directing and Joe Barton writing the script. J.J. Abrams is producing from Bad Robot, along with Hannah Minghella and Jon Cohen. Bryan Burk, Matt Reeves, and Drew Goddard will executive produce.

As with any Cloverfield pic, plot details are being kept under wraps. It also is unknown how this new installment will link to its predecessors, whether its straight sequel to the original or an anthology piece that is set in the Cloverfield universe

Not really interested in this unless it's a direct sequel to the first one. Hope it's not another installment of the "Cloververse" because Cloverfield Paradox really crapped the bed on the idea, and while I like 10 Cloverfield Lane, it should not have had the name attached to it.

Yeah, if it's not a a full-on direct sequel and explaining what the monster is and where it came from, I don't want it.

Here’s hoping it is a direct sequel to the original as that’s what the article from a year and a half ago claimed. Would be bummed out if that wasn’t the case.

Nice to see Reeves is producing this, though. The article from last year said he wasn’t.

I still don't understand why they forced the connection to the first film. Why not do what Lane did and have their own unique monster.

They wanted to have their cake and eat it too with the anthology and the fan service, simple as that. I still remember watching the movie with an old friend of mine back in 2018 when it first came out, and when the monster popped up at the end, we both collectively uttered f you movie. :funny:

But even without the Cloververse elements that movie didn't work imo. Which is a shame because the God Particle concept itself could have been done well.

I was hoping for some Zygote mutant level monstrosity like Annihilation-like fusing the stations inhabitants as the universes were bending due to the collider.

I’m not sure if I want them to explain tbh. Depends on how it’s executed I guess. The unknown is more terrifying.

A few years ago when it was announced, we were told it was a direct sequel to Cloverfield. Lane is a good movie, but there’s nothing Cloverfield about it. The Netflix movie, won’t even say the name, just another cheap trick from the playbook of JJ Abrams.

give me the sequel, damn it. No more of the ruses, JJ.

Definitely true, but dammit this movie has kept my fascination since 2008. I just need some answers lol.

I don’t need an explanation for anything, I just want to know what happens in that world after 2008. Give me a team of soldiers or scientists that explore the remains of Manhattan 15 years later. Maybe the parasites that were in the subway survived the hammerdown protocol and grew/mutated into something else. Maybe the deep sea nest where the rest of the clovers are decided to wake up after the baby went missing.

the one thing I don’t want is another movie with “Cloverfield” slapped on it that has nothing to do with Cloverfield. There is only one in my book. 10 Lane should be called something else, it deserves to stand on its own. And the other one doesn’t even warrant discussion, that’s how much of a shameless ruse it was. Piggybacking off of footage from the 08 film during the surprise Super Bowl commercial, it might’ve been JJ’s biggest middle finger to an audience, and there have been many.

There's that Cloverfield manga that came out that showed there were more Clover eggs resting in the deep ocean. Don't think it's canon, but it would be a good concept to explore as well. Also put Tagruato at the center of it considering their involvement in waking up baby Clover courtesy of the ARG.

That's of course assuming this will be a direct sequel.

You’re also working on a “Cloverfield” sequel. Are you writing it with JJ?

No, I’m writing it on my own, JJ is a producer on it. So I go away and do my drafts and then he gives notes and the Bad Robot execs give notes, and then he’ll jump in occasionally and look at drafts and stuff. I imagine probably the next one, because Babak Anvari just came on to direct so we’re getting closer to production. I’m doing some revisions at the moment and the hope would be that this would be the last sort of big script push, and then we get on to actually making it.

How does it feel going on to a project like that where there are such big expectations from fans?

I like it. I do quite like the pressure of it. And I like that there’s expectations. There are people that are excited for it and there’ll be people [who] I think will be slightly defensive, because there’s a definite quite hardcore fan base, particularly for the first movie. But it’s a bit like with “Bastard Son,” you know, that book has hardcore fans as well and people are slightly… they’re waiting for you to **** up, I think, in a sense. I feel very positive about the creative [on the “Cloverfield” sequel], I think what we’re gonna do with it is going to be really good. If I didn’t think we had a good idea, I didn’t actually think it was gonna be good, then I’d be worried. But I am really excited about the potential for what we’re doing with “Cloverfield,” and particularly the story that we came up with. I don’t know, I just think that I would really like to watch it, I think it will be a good movie. People are waiting with different preconceptions or prejudices or whatever, but all you can do at the end of the day is try and make something that’s really good, and then give it to them and see.

Still vague on whether or not this will be a direct sequel. If this ends up being another failed attempt at a Cloververse, I'm going to facepalm myself into oblivion.
