College...do we really need it?

I should check out my uni's career center. I think they opened back up on the 8th. My biggest concern right now is how long I can stretch my expired ID for free bus rides though.

However if you are looking to get in shape the fitness club is your only true option.

Not to shoot holes in your analogy and all, but what about people with home gyms? Or those who do strong man type training with logs and rocks? Or people who just get out and run their asses off? The fitness club's not the only true option, is all I'm saying. By that token, there are other avenues to pursue besides college such as apprenticeships for example. Just sayin'. :o

Home gym type person right here. Worked fine for me.

Definitely a good idea. Most universities offer career planning services and can help you land a job. Your first job right out of college will probably suck and have nothing to do with what you'd really like to be doing, though. Take the money and run is the best advice I can give you. I had a pretty cool job after college that didn't have any overtime, was somewhat interesting but not stressful at all, and gave me enough $$$ to enjoy being young and single. I knew it wouldn't be forever, so I enjoyed it for what it was. Find something like that and enjoy not being in school for awhile.

Well with your degree and inexperience in your field I'm sure you could find work as a research assistant, campaign or survey worker. Not really sure you'd be happy doing something like that but it's work.

I'm sure if you wanted to further your schooling. Jobs such as lobbyists, politicians, or teaching also comes to mind but I guess you could also try interning at some municipal or government offices.

Me as well. In fact, I've gotten much bigger and stronger than I ever did working out at my school's gyms in high school and college.

Those do sound interesting. One tricky thing about doing grad school, is that my prof said they'd expect me to do some teaching on the side, for writing. That would be pretty bizarre. I've only had one writing class.

Um, are we discussing the merits of the metaphor now?

Oh that's another thing if you want to become a journalist or an editor I'm sure you could look for internships at any newspaper or magazine.

A lot of states have a formal Job Service that carry job listings and such, so you might look in to that. Monster.com is also a pretty decent place to look.

You didn't go to Duquesne did you?

I had filled out a partial resumé on there a couple months ago just to check it out. I'll probably update it tonight. It's given me some interesting stuff as is, though nothing super related to my field. I didn't think to put writing as a skill though. We'll see what that does.

No, they just handle my electricity. University of Pittsburgh.

Ah. I dated a girl who went there and when Toven mentioned Pittsburgh it reminded me.

I always want to pronounce it Dew-queznee.

I think my biggest problem about writing, that I've found in the last week, is that I get writer's block when sober. I'm drinking now in hopes of getting inspired enough to write a paper that my prof wanted me to write just for the sake of writing it even though she let me officially skip the final paper before graduation.

Home gyms, if you're insanely rich enough to set up a complete home gym you're probably also rich enough to make Harvard and Yale come to you as well. As for running and strong men, well there are exceptions; people who are genetically gifted enough who don't need guidance to train and get in shape.

Good writing skills are highly sought after, as there are a lot of functionally illiterate people on the job market and in the workplace. Make your resume' reflect your writing abilities. Conveying as much as you possibly can in as few words as possible on a resume' is an art unto itself, but developing a resume' that does that can get you noticed and interviewed.

You don't need to be rich. My stuff cost me about 100 bucks total, for the weight bench and weights and a heavy bag.

I have a home gym that's got everything I need, and I'm definitely not insanely rich. And there is plenty of guidance and information freely available on the 'net these days. People can get pretty advanced in their training without ever working with a PT (I know this is a hot button for you because you are a PT, but it's true).

See, now we're debating the value of the metaphor.
