I have hit that fun point in life where work, school and relationships are taking over more and more of my time. Though I am not entirely abandoning video games, I have certainly scaled back my involvement with the hobby. Conversely, I find that my comic book geekery pushes forward, full steam ahead. I have even managed to get my girlfriend into comic books. As I slowly part ways with video games, I started to wonder which hobby I would choose if I could only have one hobby.
For me, comic books win. I find myself more intrigued by a well told story and round characters than I am by a pretty game. I know that video games tell stories too, but I feel that story telling in games has really ruined the core mechanic of the medium, which is interactive diversion. Story telling may justify the game scenario, but ultimately I care more about playing a game than having cut scenes interrupt the flow of the game. Also, video game characters are usually so flat. Even fantastic characters like Solid Snake have never really changed. That is why I will forever love comic books. Fantastic stories like Y The Last Man, Strangers in Paradise, Scud the Disposable Assassin and even super hero fanfare, is filled with so much fantasy, drama and character development.
