Comedy Community - Part 4

Sad to see her go, especially as you could tell she loved being part of the show. I am still somewhat optimistic about the show. The last season was great but you feel the absence of Troy. I do wonder how they will explain Shirley's absence, even if they just mention her going away or something, it's still going to be weird to not have scene showing her departure.

Why don't they bring in Brie Larson full time?

She's awesome and her character works wonderful with Abed.

Only thing I can see being a hinderance is her fantastic indie film schedule...

Somebody asked Harmon about Brie Larson becoming a regular at Comic-Con, but he said the same thing, her movie schedule makes it unlikely.

At this point I wish they'd just leave it. Pierce was no big loss, because his role was such an unnecessary one.

Then we lost Troy and you could feel his absence and now Shirley's gonna be absent and that's going to be an even bigger void.

It's odd to think what could be a likely final season will be featuring only Jeff, Britta, Annie, and Abed.

Not sure I understand. Why would people not want more of something they're a fan of when people in a position to make it continue to make it?

Because some of us prefer quality over quantity.

I prefer quality and quantity when I can get it though.

Hell... I'd be fine if we limped to 6 seasons.

As long as the movie that ever comes out has Troy and Shirley coming back for at least something.

To be honest I don't think her character being gone is going to leave THAT much of a void. I get that she is there and contributes to the balance of the group dynamic but as far as actual laughs she has given me she was low on the totem pole. I wonder if she is at least going to appear in the first episode to give her goodbyes or if they are just going to write her out completely?

The problem is that the quality of the show is nowhere near what it used to be, and with the quantity of quality going down so does the quality. Shirley may not have been the funniest, but her dynamics with others made her funny and you've already lost several dynamics throughout the show such as Pierce/Shirley, Troy/Abed (it still pains me to mention this one), and now Shirley/all the others because her dynamic with all the characters were different and humorous. Whether it was Shirley mocking Britta for her atheism or Annie for being Jewsih, or Jeff for a multitude of things, you can't say you haven't lost quality.

The only characters left are Jeff, Annie, Britta, Abed, and Pelton. That's enough for some quality, but it's just not going to be even tougher run for quality, especially when you take into account that also Jon Oliver and Johnathan Banks aren't coming back.

Wouldn't surprise me if he did. I mean, what else does he have going on right now?

Chang IS coming back. Been confirmed multiple times by multiple people. Shirley's absence isn't that big of a deal. And Season 5 was as good as seasons 1-3. There.

Yeah. Pretty awesome that we're getting both with Community.

I think Parker responded to this better than I could....

This. I mean, people seemingly believe that this show is still of the same quality as the first two seasons, and...I just don't see it.

I mean, even Pierce's replacement is already gone.

Harmon teased Jan for air date on The Nerdist Podcast... Also joked to have Annie get all of the swearing out in the first episodes cold opening to mess with TheR new boundaries.

Season 5 was as good as seasons 1-3. There.

It really wasn't. Donald Glover's loss was felt and really hurt the dynamics of the show, including losing arguably the best dynamic in the show between him and Abed.

And after rewatching the earlier seasons and getting the taste out of my mouth his later stuff, I will admit that I was harsh on Chevy Chase as Pierce. He was actually pretty funny.

Yeah, the show has undeniably decreased in quality, and not just because of the loss of co-stars either. The over reliance on parody episodes meant that the standard characterisations became more broadly stretched to fit those parodies, to the point where some of them were unrecognisable compared to their season 1 selves. The season 5 finale was painfully unfunny as well.

Just euthanise the show already.

I have to ask, as someone who's gotten into the show much later, why do people hate Season 4 so much?

The creator, Dan Harmon left, and it shows. Harmon was the creative force as he was the showrunner and head writer of the show.

Season 4 just wasn't funny, and it's reliance on parody episodes got worse than season 3, and didn't really have the laughs to back it up like some episodes of season 3 had.

I got recently into the show as well and avoided reading much into it, and yes, I can count with one hand all the times I laughed in season four. It was just unfunny and kinda dull.

Season five was a bit of an improvement, but it doesn't just feel the same.

I'd say Harmon is just as bad because season 5 was just as bad as season 4 in my opinion if not worse because it was actually rather immature about season 4.

Dude, if your show was on a life line with you and someone even kept it around long enough for you to come back to them, you don't spend a lot of time on trying to discredit half of what they did for you.

That whole handling of season 4 and it's show runners really soured me on Harmon and Season 5 as whole.

That's the one thing I will put on Harmon. Pierce's character went down hill mid way through season 2 when they turned him into "crazy old man who ruins everything" guy. Also, making Brita an idiot. I'm not sure why Harmon did that. S1 Pierce and Britta were far more interesting and better characters.

I didn't like Britta until season 2 onward. Season 1 Britta felt like a pretty generic character that you'd find on any sitcom in season 1 and that whole thing ''Will they or won't they?" thing with Jeff didn't help her in season 1 either.
