Comedy Community - Part 4

Hmmm. Weird that Parks & Recreation had similar ratings and got picked up for another season but this didn't. But can't say I am surprised.

That was the one surprise that Parks had the same ratings, sometimes lower, as Community. The only difference is that NBCUniversal owns half of Community but 100% of Parks.

Maybe after the dust settles it will find a new home. Maybe Sony sticks it on the Playstation since they're going into original programming along with the X-Box.

I'm just gonna throw it out there....the show hasn't been consistently good since half way through season 3. Harmon, then the new producers and Harmon again got really lazy once they realized that half-hearted, fourth wall breaking satire of any popular nerd genre would earn them praise from their fans. Gimmick episodes were good when they were the gimmick, not the norm. Sadly, this show became nothing but gimmicks...especially in the most recent season. It is probably for the best that it is over.

While I'm sad, think about it: It lasted for way more years then it should have (ratings wise). I hope there can be one final TV movie or a sendoff though.

Love the show.

I'll simply treasure season 1 and 2 - before most of the backstage nonsense ruined everything.

Personally I loved seasons 3 and 5.Season 3 is still my favorite season.I really don't think the show is completely dead yet though. We'll get some kind of closure (God knows when and how though).

5 was a pretty good season and felt like a mild return to form. 4 was mediocre overall, with some really nice episodes and some terrible ones. 3 was rocky but less so.

I'm sad... I really wanted 6/movie. Seriously, NBC has only 2 shows left and one they are maybe passing on and the other is leaving next year.

RIP you pathetic channel.

I'll always love and miss this show... and it's characters, it's balls and laughs.

Heartbroken.

Allegedly Sony is 'aggressively' trying to find a new distributor, so a Comedy Central, Netflix, or Hulu pick-up is possible.

I'm not sure what I want. I guess whatever Dan Harmon wants. I'm happy to see it fade out like this if the people behind it are happy too.

Dan's got alot on his plate. Rick and Morty is a phenomenon already. Plus he's got Harmonquest, another animated show with his improv buddies doing DnD, coming up too. Plus he's rumored to have a project with Arrested Development's Mitch Hurwitz.

Community, you are forever my favorite show.

As usual with you Matt, I couldn't disagree more.

It's still a crime to not get to the 6 seasons and a movie when we've mad it this far. It's like disqualifying a runner when he's a mile out of a 10K.

If it does get picked up by someone else I hope John Oliver returns. I thought he worked great in the group dynamic Chang was pretty stale this season.

I think that's a fair statement. It became enjoyable again this season but the wear and tear was showing in season three. A sixth season would still lure me in. It wasn't rotting from the inside like The Office was in later seasons.

Parenthood is still in limbo and if does come back it will be for 9-13 episodes, Parks and Rec is likely to come back just for 13 episodes and Hannibal was renewed for 13 it was a bit surprising that NBC didn't bring it back since they had the same numbers as those shows.

What are they going to put up against Thursday Night Football? That night already blows for NBC even when they had Michael J. Fox. Sacrifice 6 episodes of Community/Parks against football then have another 7 episodes fill in somewhere in January and March.

Can't wait to rewatch the series. That first season was incredible, one of the best of any show.

Watch Rick and Morty if you can, Harmon did well helping out there.

Renew Dracula and see if a Vampire can take a bite out of Thursday Night Football. Get it....a :word: bite.

If... if Comedy Central or Hulu picks it up, please call it Community Redux; It would be so awesome and beautiful.

I agree with Matt. For all of Harmon's strengths and intricate planning, the man dropped character personalities and plotlines like my brother drops his phone while break dancing. Britta went through like 5 personalities, Jeff's storylines never ever changed, and the Jeff/Annie romance was stretched out forever even though not a single person cared about and just wanted it to go away. The writers' infatuation with Abed became irritating, and having him say 'This is a bottle episode! This is a Law and Order episode' was just Harmon thinking being meta meant being clever.

Compare Parks, which even as it sags around the edges (though the second half of Season 6 was in my eyes one of the show's mean heights) remains absolutely centred on the characters and how they grow and develop. Community for all its cleverness fundamentally failed to commit to any of its shakeups. What did Jeff as a teacher come to? Nothing. Britta's psychologist goal? Nothing. The leaving of Pierce at the end of season 2? Nothing. The Jeff/Annie thing? Super nothing.

That's what I meant by no closure basically. Nothing really happened or changed for these characters. None of them really came into their own as people. There weren't any real character arcs. They dropped the ball storytelling wise when opting to go with all the big themed episodes.

Exactly. Not having characters develop in a comedy is fine. Many comedies do that. But Community began as that sort of show, and the whole run through would always tease the audience with potential growth, give them their own stories or plotlines, etc, only to never go back to them or ignore them entirely.

I disagree with people completely about the characters not growing. They were all damaged people. And they needed each other and Greendale because they couldn't function outside.

But we saw each of them come to terms with this and with themselves and the people around them. And they learned not to be ashamed of their identity, but learned to be comfortable with it and find that they were fine all along.

Troy, Annie, and Abed, all really grew the most over the series as they discovered who they were. Troy especially after his 21st bday in season 2 when he saw what adulthood really is, and he gravitated toward taking charge and being a leader in that seasons finale. Then taking his own path in season 5. Leaving Abed to mature without him. Abed was really psycho-analyzed in season 3.

Jeff grew so much too. There was always this push and pull with his age and imagination/nerd culture which he repressed. It's all there. Just look at the end of Pillows and Blankets, where he goes to the deans office to pick up Troy and Abed's imaginary hats. It's all there guys. It doesn't need to be spoon fed. You just have to look for it. It's what makes Community the best. Same with GI Jeff, his fear, and acceptance of aging. Or the finale with unlocking the computers door with his love for everyone.

Britta committed to being herself even if it caused her scorn. She's a hero as well. Pierce became more accepting of other people, and understood the power that Greendale had, and what it did for people. The whole show is about healing and learning and acceptance and growth, but above all imagination.

Also season 3 and 5 are amazing. And perhaps my favorites.

I seriously tear up thinking that it's probably all over now. Greendale is where I belong.

NBC Thursday night was my favorite thing on tv for years (Office, 30 Rock, Scrubs, Earl, Parks, Community...), but now it's looking like there will be one show next year that I will be watching, instead of four.

I remember when the crap like Whitney, Sean Saves the Universe, and Outsourced were the exception on NBC Thursdays. Now they will be the norm.

Nah. Not even close. Harmon had to clean up the mess the previous season made while still trying to make it the Community it had been in the first 3 seasons. Gimmicks? Hardly.

What about Shirley?

It's disappointing that season six is not happening, if felt like the show had beaten the odds for so long that it felt inevitable. But it's almost miraculous that it lasted as long as it did with Harmon coming back for season five and letting the show end on an unplanned high note. And in this age of digital distribution I could easily see there being a push for a S6 on Netflix ala Arrested Development. They could even combine S6 and the prophesied movie into one big conclusion of the series. So all is not lost.
