Comic-Con 2011: COMMUNITY Panel Recap; Michael Kenneth Williams (Omar from THE WIRE) Joins the Cast for Season 3 Arc

Pop-pop! The cast and creative team behind NBC’s Community entertained audience members today and gave us some sneak peeks about the upcoming season 3. They were introduced by a countdown ending in a remixed clip montage of some of our favorite scenes from past episodes. On hand with creator Dan Harmon were cast members Donald Glover (Troy), Danny Pudi (Abed), Gillian Jacobs (Britta), Yvette Nicole Brown (Shirley), Joel McHale (Jeff), Ken Jeong (Chang), Jim Rash (Dean Pelton) and, of course, Chevy Chase (Pierce). Alison Brie (Annie) was unable to attend due to shooting for Save the Date, but did take questions through twitter (@AlisonBrie). Hit the jump to read about a special appearance by Annie’s Boobs.

The clip montage introduced the release date for season 2 of Community on DVD, which will be available starting September 6th. You can check out the Comic Con exclusive slip cover of the DVD set here and here. The DVD set itself was introduced by none other than Troy’s pet monkey, Annie’s Boobs. Confirmed extras on the DVD include:

- Commentary for every episode
- Deleted scenes
- Making of the Christmas, Paintball and Halloween (Best Buy exclusive) episodes
- Cast Evaluations in Dean Pelton’s office
- One blooper reel per disc (4)

The panel then took questions from the moderator as well as screening questions from Twitter users through the hashtag #anniesboobs. The following is a recap of the Q&A.

- When asked if Pierece went to far this year, Chevy Chase replied that “Yes, he went much too far.” and then proceeded to say things like, “In this next season Pierce and Britta have sex.” Donald Glover replied that, “Britta gets pierced by Pierce.” and Chase remarked that “This season, everyone gets to pork Annie!”

- Once the moderator got the panel back under control, they asked about relationships that were established in last season and if they would continue. As for Jeff and Britta, McHale said that we’ll find out in Season 3. As for Abed and Annie, Pudi said that “we’ll see where it goes.” Harmon replied that it was his intention that “there’s a chance for everyone to get together.”

- Yvette Nicole Brown said she “hopes to see more of Malcolm (Jamal Warner) this season” and is glad that Chang was not the father of her baby.

- Ken Jeong agrees with that sentiment: “As a father, I’m so glad that Chang is not the father of anyone. It’s so fun to play that character and go to the demonic depths of pathetic-ness.” Chang will also get a little bit more power and authority in the upcoming season.

- Jim Rash (Dean Pelton) will become a regularly featured cast member this season

- Michael Kenneth Williams (The Wire) will join Community this season as Greendale’s new biology teacher. Harmon remarked that “when some people are threatened against watching the show, he can either add water to dilute it or he can add flavor to threaten the hell out of everyone.”

- It’s obvious that Harmon really wants an Emmy for Community and has vowed to keep working until they get it.

In Season 3, Abed and Troy move in together and their relationship goes “to the next level.” Harmon confirmed that they are currently planning an “exciting and fun” Halloween episode for this year, but did not verify that they would do another paintball episode. He did say that one of the early episodes of the new season would feature multiple timelines. Harmon also appeased fans by restating that Community was always marketed and designed as being a four-year arc for Jeff to earn his degree and graduate and that plan hasn’t changed. While they want to keep working on this show forever, he promised not to pull the rug out from under fans at the end of Season 4.

Jeez is that going to be an expensive week for me...

Community Season 2, Thor, X-Men: First Class then SW: The Complete Saga...all within days of each other?!?! :wow:

Having said that, i'm digging the cover art. Both of them.

I'm really hoping that Community does indeed get to finish its (supposed) 4-year run.

I like that Michael Kenneth Williams is going to appear in season 3, as a biology teacher haha, can't wait to see that.

Michael K. Williams is awesome. Community somehow continues to get better.

John Goodman will join the cast of Community for a multi-episode arc in Season 3, TVGuide.com has learned.

Goodman, who's currently appearing as the villain on Damages, will play Vice Dean Laybourne, the head of Greendale's air conditioning repair school. He will appear in six episodes.

Creator Dan Harmon recently told TVGuide.com that Goodman's character would be "somewhat of a dark figure on campus." Goodman's character will be a major foe for Jim Rash's Dean Pelton.

Goodman's casting follows that of The Wire's Michael K. Williams, who will play the study group's biology professor in at least three episodes.

The 59-year-old actor is best-known for his role as Dan Conner on Roseanne. He also replaced John Belushi as Dan Aykroyd's partner in the Blues Brothers Band on Saturday Night Live, as well as the Blues Brothers 2000 film. Goodman also starred on the first season of HBO's Treme.

I love that Greendale has an air conditioning repair school. It's so Greendale. So I take it this will be the other major Troy will be looking at?

I should go to air conditioning repair school. They make pretty good money. :o

i wonder if chang is going to try usurping Pelton as Dean? i mean, Ken Jeong did mention that he would come across some power this season. that would be very interesting lol.

I don't think so. I think he was referring to the fact that he will become a security guard this season.

Also, the full Comic Con Panel (Minus the blooper reel and the other things they showed) is now on NBC.com

Danny Pudi on New Community Professor Michael K. Williams and What’s Coming Up for Abed

8/2/11 at 5:45 PM

The season finale of Community included plenty of heroics (and a dash of romanticism) on the part of amateur filmmaker Abed (Danny Pudi). He not only got to play (space) cowboy, but he also got the girl, locking lips with Annie in a climactic kiss. As hinted at by Abed's monosyllabic post-smooth reaction ("Cool"), and creator Dan Harmon's interview with Vulture last month, it's unlikely the relationship will burn bright next season. So what will be happening with Abed this fall? One word: cohabitation.

"Troy and Abed are moving in together," Pudi told us Monday night at NBC's swanky TV Critics Association bash at Beverly Hills' the Bazaar by José Andrés. "Abed was reluctant at the end of season one ... but this year, they're just going for it. They've gotten to the level where they know they're the only two people who understand each other. And they've got a lot of serious projects to put together. Kickpuncher needs a fourth movie." Pudi says he thinks the new living arrangement will allow fans to find out more about Abed's true personality. "We get to see a little more of Abed's world at home," he says. "Like, I've always wondered: How long does Abed brush his teeth? 43 seconds?"

Then there's the Greendale gang's new biology professor, played by Michael K. Williams (Omar from The Wire). When we asked Pudi how Williams was on set, he reacted with a very serious, very loud, "DUDE!" Pudi then elaborated: "He's a beast. Last year was genre-heavy, and the characters were going on a lot of adventures. Right away with Michael K. Williams, and also John Goodman, there's a lot of intensity, an outside threat. He's a great addition. He doesn't take a lot of ********. And it's fun to see a character who doesn't take a lot of ******** dealing with a group that is all ********." Pudi calls Williams's character "this menacing kind of guy. He's charismatic and you're captivated by him. But you're also scared. It's a very interesting dynamic."

Pudi didn't have much intel on upcoming story lines, telling us he tries to stay in the dark about plot twists as much as he can. "I never really know where the show is going to go," he says. "And as an actor I like that, because I just get to react. It's more organic." That's not to say there aren't exceptions: "If we're doing something like the My Dinner With Andre episode, and I've never seen the movie, then yeah, I ask them to tell me in advance," Pudi says.
