Constantine General Discussion Thread

i hate to say it. but this show does not interest me at all.

this is coming from someone that doesn't read Hellblazer though.

i know this is blasphemy, but i loved Keanu's Constantine, and from what I've seen of this new show, I prefer Keanu's version. I realize his version isn't nearly as comics accurate.

I'll wait til i see the pilot to fully judge though.

The most interesting part of this show to me is the fact that they're incorporating Doctor Fate and probably some other DC characters. That's so awesome. But idk... everything else isn't doing it for me.

I'm really not trying to be negative. But I'll probably be watching just for DC references

'Constantine's' Lucy Griffiths Exits NBC Drama
3:30 PM PDT 7/10/2014 by Lesley Goldberg

The "True Blood" alum played Liv, Constantine's partner in crime, on the upcoming NBC take on "Hellblazer." That character will be written out and replaced by another from the source material.

NBC's rookie comic drama Constantine is parting ways with its female lead.

True Blood alum Lucy Griffiths has exited the network's adaptation of Hellblazer after the show's creators opted to move in a different direction, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Constantine centers on master of the occult John Constantine (Criminal Minds' Matt Ryan), who struggles with his faith as he is haunted by the sins of his past and is suddenly thrust into the role of defending humanity from the gathering forces of darkness.

Griffiths played Liv, the female lead and an offbeat woman who finds herself teamed with Constantine after she is marked for death by a powerful demon. With the ability to see the supernatural world among us, she becomes a key player in the battle between good and evil. NBC will not recast the role but instead add the character of Zed, a familiar name from the Constantine books. That character, a foil for the show's title character who becomes his right-hand woman, has not yet been cast. She will appear in an early episode of the series, with additional characters from Hellblazer and the occult DC universe to be introudced later. Zed will, however, be the first to appear.

From Warner Bros. Television, Dexter's Daniel Cerone penned the teleplay and crafted the story alongside David Goyer (Batman Begins). Neil Marshall directed the pilot.

Constantine airs Fridays at 10 p.m. starting Oct. 24 on NBC. Griffiths (Robin Hood) is repped by DBA, Principal Entertainment and Hamilton Hodell.
Hmm...

This is a surprise I expected her see out at least the first season. Not too bothered she wasn't a canon character anyway.

Zed I think made her appearance pretty early on in the Hellblazer comics maybe in the first 5 issues I think.

So what's gonna happen? Are they redoing the Pilot? Or just write her out after a couple Episodes? It'll be weird, first making the character a big deal, with being the daughter of a friend and who has the ability to tell where **** is going to go down, and then just dumping her like that.

I wonder how they'll handle the transition. I'm sure they're not redoing the pilot though. She'll probably be there a few episodes and get killed off or something.

Bet they'll have Zed cast by SDCC.

Lucy's Liv was alright with me. But I prefer Zed since she's from the comics. I just hope the transition from Liv to Zed will be smooth since Liv was really set up in the pilot like she's gonna have a lot more to do in the future.

and that's what I'm wondering she was set up to be the lead female of the show or at least this first season. it's going to be hard to make it a smooth transition.

Yeah I vote to kill her off. People around Constantine tends to die anyway, so it makes sense.

EW has a little extra in their story...

Constantine executive producer Daniel Cerone says that the show is replacing the wet-behind-the-ears Liv with the more experienced and feisty Zed to give its main demon hunter a more effective partner/foil. “When you put a wide-eyed innocent into that world, she’s just very reactive,” he tells EW. “The nice thing about Swamp Thing, when he first teamed up with Constantine, was that Swamp Thing had abilities, Swamp Thing had skills. Constantine needed those skills. One of the coolest things about Constantine he doesn’t have any ‘powers.’ He came out of a time with all these superheroes with their garish colors and flashy powers, and he just comes out with a rumpled coat, wearing browns and greys, and he just knows a lot magic and spells, but it’s all knowledge-based. Anything he can do is based in knowledge and his own studying. Zed is actually one of the first women Constantine meets in the comic books, and she has various psychic powers. We felt ultimately she’s going to service the first season better as someone to pair Constantine up with. She can get in his face a little bit and have some of her own realizations and skills and really push him. But if whoever Constantine is working with is constantly on her heels, that just wouldn’t service the show really well.”

Zed is a better choice as a partner as she is from the comics she can offer up a number of storylines and plots from Hellblazer they can use in the show.

Zed could lead to the Resurrection Crusade, Damnation Army and the whole pagan hippy group stuff.

Zed was badass wayward daughter of an evangelical family.

I sort of hope they keep the new wave/goth type look the character had but I doubt they will.

I could see Constantine manipulating Liv into sacrificing herself which would be typical Hellblazer. In the comics many of John's supporting characters end up getting killed due to getting sucked into his orbit.

I feel bad for the actress. But maybe she can guest star?

Hmm... does anyone know how far along they were, with the production of Episodes? If they decided right after the Pilot, that they wanted to go into a new direction, they could have already written her out in the 2nd Episode. Then they just never air the original Pilot, and treat Episode 2 as the show's new Pilot.

I just don't know if they could actually make it a smooth transition, if they keep the girl for multiple Episodes, and then write her out. The build up was just too big, for her to simply disappear or to just get killed off.

Yeah I don't really buy that argument. Liv could have grown into becoming a worthy partner to Constantine, and had interesting character work done along the way. It's called a character arc and development. She didn't need to be a badass right away, that's actually kind of the laziest way that you can go about it. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that Zed's in the show, but I just don't agree with the explanation or philosophy behind the change.

They won't reshoot the pilot. They will just be kill her off or have her leave Constantine within the first couple episodes.

Either that or pull a Eric Balfour on Buffy by offing her in Episode 2.

Still, I'm thrilled about Zed since she was among the top 10 reasons why I strongly recommend the Jamie Delano TPBs

I'm sure Goyer and Cerone will keep the signature look. We have a proper looking John, and they got Ritchie Simpson accurately plus Newcastle, Astra and Nergal.

We're basically getting the Jamie Delano experience for the most part rather than say....the Jeff Lemire/Ray Fawkes/Didio mandated bland variety

Brian Azzarello's run was good I think. I've not heard many people give his run praise enough.
