Crazy Rich Asians - from the producer of The Hunger Games

Early estimates has CRA dropping just 5.7% this weekend with 25m. Nao that's a CRAZY RICH 2nd weekend.

CRA will have nice, long LEGS

Good LORD.

Can Constance Wu just be in every movie from now on?

Hot Damn !!!!!!!! There's a chance that CRA will stay flat from last weekend during the 3 day (FSS) weekend & that makes a record breaking 4 day Labor Day weekend a legit possibility. 160m+ final DBO is possible. What a historic box office run.

I just saw it. What an amazing film.

Constance wu is such a Star. A perfect rom com hero, beautiful but relatable. Henry just has the Bogart level charm too.

Astrid is a goddess and to be honest I didn’t know how they were going to make her work. She’s described as so perfect, who could live up to that? Gemma chan that’s who. Same with Rachel actually, I hate the term Mary Sue but when I read the books I thought Rachel was a bit too perfect but contance just made her so real.

There’s a lot cute from the book especially the racier stuff like with Bernard tai. I was kind of looking forward to how they were going to do that.

And Michelle Yeoh! She was so nuanced! The way she would just have a temple throb to show her rage, it was incredible. If the world was right she would win best Oscar.

Can’t wait for more. I hope Nico gets a boyfriend in the next one

Saw this a few days ago. I liked it, but was underwhelmed, considering how highly praised the film is. I understood and appreciated the commentary (as well as the fact that a film with an entirely Asian main cast was made and given the budget it deserved by an American film studio), but overall felt like it was just fine.

I'm actually surprised Warners hasn't greenlit the third movie, judging by the great numbers for CRA. China Rich Girlfriend is all but a certainty (likely for summer 2020), but if I were the Burbank execs, I would look at filming Rich People Problems back-to-back with Girlfriend.

I guess people would just think they were cashing in.

I can’t wait to see who they get to play Carlton? I could see Charles Melton getting the gig but they constantly say he looks like a male version of Rachel and I don’t know who would look like a male version of Constance?

John M Chu is directing In The Heights for WB in 2019 so China Rich Girlfriend likely won't start filming until 2020 so Summer 2021 is more likely.

I'm more curious who's going to play Rachel's father? I think it'll be a name, maybe Chow Yun-Fat so we can a Crouching Tiger reunion?

It was nice to see Michelle Yeoh in a movie where she didn't have to do any martial arts, like her cameo in Guardians 2.

Maybe. I have a feeling they’ll want someone well known. I could even see them getting Jackie chan because he’s so well known in the West. I thing the baos need a statesmen/statesperson type actor though and Jackie is more fun.jacky Cheung would be fun. He was amazing in Helios

^I can't see Jackie Chan as Bao Gaoling either.

Yeah. Plus there’s a prime opportunity to bring Gong Li in as Bao Shaoyen. If they cast her no-one would be able to guess the films ending

How is she doing?

Is there anyone who still doubt there are double standards? It's hard to deny it even as Hollywood inches (or maybe that should be centimeters) towards progress.

Yeah as common as it isn in real life. They'd sooner put a black or Latino guy with a white chick and they barely tolerate that.

I actually have seen several white women with asian men where I work. It isn't exactly a lot but it is more common than I see portrayed.

As far as I know the stereotypical interracial heterosexual relationships are either white man/ Asian woman or white woman/ black man. In both types the person of color are objectified by the white person: Asian women are good housekeeper and submissive, while black men are aggressive and good in bed (whatever that means). I don't claim that either is true but that's what I've read from many perspectives (including a few white women who get into a relationship with black men because they want to have "beautiful black babies"). In the country where I live (predominantly white) I do observe that interracial relationships are mostly white local men and foreign women of color (including Asian women coming here to study/ Asian women meeting their white tourist husbands in their countries and refugees from Africa/ Arab/ Muslim countries). There are foreign men of color (mostly refugees from Africa/ Arab countries) marrying white local women, but I've only met 1 (one) couple of an (East) Asian man and a white woman. Even 20s-something Asian-descendant men born here tend to marry other Asian (descendant) women, not white women.

I think it's usually viewed that women want to marry "up", and combine that with racism (which everyone has, consciously or not), lead to interracial relationships comprise of mostly women of color and white men (and combine with colorism, I guess, lead to couples of (East) Asian women and white men).

‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Flops in China With 8th Place Box Office Debut

Hollywood’s racial diversity triumph, “Crazy Rich Asians” will be lucky to score more than $1 million in its opening weekend at the China box office.

Afternoon attendances on Friday had ranked the romantic comedy in fourth position. But by the evening it became apparent that mainstream Chinese audiences’ interest was barely flickering for a U.S. social phenomenon, that has few stars of significance in China, and which was served up several months after the rest of the world.

China wasn't ready for a movie about Asians, looks like.

Believe it or not romantic comedies are a staple in Chinese cinema. This film just didn't give the audience anything new. It's why even a Venom can make bank in China specifically and Asia generally, because the Chinese for all their years of breathtaking cinema still don't make quite as many Hollywood styled blockbuster types films for their home audience.

I’m not shocked. I’ve heard a lot of Singaporeans say it’s obviously aimed at western audiences with all the gratituious tourist shots and stuff. Sometimes it’s a bit over the top.

I must admit, when a movie randomly cuts to the Sydney opera house getting destroyed I do tend to roll my eyes
