Civil War Crossbones

Still being played by frank grillo?

I love that guy. The costume looks good, the gloves are weird but it will probably look better in action.
Of course, it is grillo: https://***********/frankgrillo

He isn't afraid of the Marvel Sniper after posting these pictures. :woot:

They're out in semi-public view filming so it's not like he broke some top-secret set embargo.

I love it. As long as the gauntlets and helmet-esque mask are designed for a purpose.

Fantastic adaptation

Crossbones was pretty freakin scarred at the end of TWS. The mask is probably just there to cover up the scars.

It's a flawless translation of the comic costume, IMO. And yeah, I think the added armor is there b/c Rumlow was severely burned… though now I really do hope he breaks Cap's face. Hard.

BRING IT, BONES!! #TeamX ;)

It helps to block super soldier punches and shields, too.

Character first, costumes second. I dont care if his suit is awesome, if the character is weak it ruins everything.

This is where my fandom gets serious. Im not a little kid who only wants to see colorful images. I want to be invested in these people as people first. If Rumlow is great without the suit, then having it will just make him better. I think you can dig it.

Are his lower arms cybernetic?

He's wearing some type of guantlets.

A poster on another forum dubbed the gauntlets "Cap slappers". I'd like to see that name catch on. :hehe:

They need to make some of those wearable foam Cap Slappers like the Hulk fists

I liked Rumlow played by Grillo in TWS, and have a soft spot for Crossbones, ever since the days of him battling Bullseye during the Streets Of Poison story. I like to think of Crossbones as a scummy, thuggish Deathstroke, without perhaps Slade's world class mind, but still a dude that can hang in a fight with a lot of A and B list bad asses. Grillo didn't have the size I would prefer, but TWS Rumlow was very cool, a definite pro's pro (which is how I see Crossbones in comics) and he too was just a little bit scummy.

All that said... Nope. Not feeling this look in the least. And it's not the gauntlets. MCU Cap is truly SUPER human. The stuff they have him do is closer to Ultimate Cap levels than mere "peak human". So, yeah, Bones is gonna need something to even the playing field. It's the rest of the look. The mask, the outfit itself... It comes off kinda cheap to me and that beyond the gloves, not a lot of thought was put into it's aesthetics. Sorry, but I think they whiffed it on this one. Now, no skin off my nose as long as Grillo is used well, of course and the Russos have shown they can utilize him well so... Eh, I'll live with it, whille just not loving it.

I think Crossbones look is industrial and functional with an anarchic edge, which I prefer for the character to sleek and high tech.

Do we know if Crossbones is still a pawn for HYDRA? Or is he doing mostly freelance stuff by the time Civil War rolls around? The costume does look more "homemade" than the HYDRA-issue armor we saw in AoU. Maybe Rumlow put it together himself, and isn't being outfitted by HYDRA.

See... That would be interesting. Imagine if Rumlow is working freelance. He decides to get revenge on Cap and crew, and he's the cause of the "inciting incident" that brings the Civil War to a head? He does something that causes massive casualties (bombing?) and he gets caught but the details that come out make people wary of super heroes. Basically a personal vendetta that one man has against a few others leads to a large scale tragedy, and people start to wonder who is in charge?

@sergeantbucky, Probably but idk for sure

You would think so, as what other motivation would he have for his actions if not working for Hydra? He didn't really have a grudge against anyone in particular ("I want you to know, Cap, this ain't personal"), nor did he really have the need for revenge. The falling Hellicarrier was the reason for his crippled state (as it caused the Triskelion to collapse in on itself, crushing him), so there is nothing personal in that regard.

Plus there is also Zemo in this film too, and isn't he affiliated with Hydra? If he is and Crossbones is subordinate to him and/or working with him for the same reasons then yes he still would be a Hydra pawn. I believe it has been confirmed that they will be working together in some way, hasn't it?

Yeah he'd be an idiot to rush into battle with the Avengers without wearing any sort of protection. Especially since the last time he tried to take on Cap, he got his ass whupped.

I don't think so. We know Zemo is still in the picture in some way. It'd be weird to have two completely unrelated plots involving HYDRA villains without them working together.

Obviously not but I disagree!

I love his design! Maybe it could be a little more sleek and high-tech, but it works for me

Well... I don't know... WHY did the Helicarrier crash in the first place? Oh, right... CAP AND HIS BUDDIES. :sly: Just saying, I don't think Rumlow would be quite as rational about this. He was nearly killed and is now scarred for life. I don't think he'd be splitting hairs about responsibility. I think he'd want revenge, and you could easily write that he's a one man operation at the start. (That get's further recruited down the line if you want him to be Zemo's henchman or what have you. And... We don't know yet if Zemo is HYDRA or not, do we?)

As I said... Do we even KNOW if Zemo has any HYDRA connections as of now?

But remember that it still lacks the qualities of being a personal event. Did Steve and Sam intentionally make it crash into the Triseklion and furthermore crush him with the rubble? No, they only wanted to prevent Hydra's plan from succeeding, and Rumlow unfortunately failed to escape from the building before being crushed. There is no reason for any sort of revenge against any of the protagonists in this scenario unless he was simply fulfilling his duties as a Hydra agent.

Now if Steve and/or Sam tore his limbs off and left him to burn alive on the banks of a lava river like what happened to Anakin in the third Star Wars movie, then there is your reason for your anger/vengeance. It only makes sense for him to remain sided with Hydra

I think you are applying WAY too much rationality to this. Comic book villains (villains of many stripes for that matter across media) don't always act in firmly logical manners. To say that he wouldn't want to kill Steve and his buddies because, "Oh, hey man... I know I have to wear a mask for the rest of my life, my cushy job as a Hydra employee was just taken away, I spent a couple of years doing skin grafts and learning to walk again, all because you and your pals had to do their hero thing... But no hard feelings, cuz, really, it's not personal and I can separate my professional and private life."

Sorry... It would be RIDICULOUS if Rumlow DIDN'T want a piece of Cap and crew out of a sense of revenge. People are emotional. We aren't logic machines.

To be fair it was his fight with Falcon that caused him to be in the building that colapsed on him leaving him morally wounded.

If he didn't I don't think there'd be much motivation for him to factor into the plot. I don't get why they'd use a Nazi villain with ties to HYDRA in the comics and then not have him actually be HYDRA.
