Ant-Man Dammit, Janet! The official Wasp thread

Wouldn't that work better if they used Hank's first wife(Maria Pym), in that time period?
Yea, that would work better. I just wanted to retain the legacy aspect of Lang taking up Pym's persona, paralleled by Wasp Jr. taking on her mom's. I just think that would work wonderfully.

You could still get your wish; it's just that Janet wouldn't be the daughter of Maria or "Janet Sr." (The age difference wouldn't work out anyway: so far all the cast rumors for Janet -- or the female lead, in any event -- is in the 30something range, making her DOB in the 1980s, not the 1960s. Or earlier.)

And yeah, I like the idea of Maria being in this 1960s first reel. If she's a comrade and/or Significant Other of Pym, and winds up getting brutalized and murdered by Castillo in a callback to the actual Astonishing Tales era, that'd be a great reason for Pym to retire from the spy game and spend the rest of his life bitterly blaming SHIELD's politics for her death and his own failures/shortcomings.

of course. I'm not sure why people are making it complicated.

In my experience, people typically "make it complicated" when they are trying, by some twisted house-that-Jack-built logic, to move the narrative from what actually is happening or likely to happen, to what they want to happen. Hence the various insane "Third Mandarin" theories. They aren't based on anything rational, they are based on a desperate desire to have a guy wearing fancy robes with ten magic rings.

I think it makes perfect sense to use Maria. she was already executed for being a defector, in the books. it's not hard to tweak it so that she was some kind of intelligence operative, as well. I wonder if they'd change Maria's country of origin, for this.

No, I like her a lot. Did she have prior commitments or something? I don't remember hearing anything about it.

That's actually really retroactively disappointing lol.

disclaimer: I got this off of imdb and screenrant. but they made it sound like she had a busy shooting schedule. I don't know what movies she has coming down the line. I wish she'd reconsider. I think a name like that would put this movie over the top; attention-wise.

I've got kind of an off-the-wall idea here, but what if Janet Van Dyne was played by a sexy older woman? Not as old as Michael Douglas, but someone who could realistically have been his younger sidekick/lover in the 1960s or 1970s. And someone who could still look good in a leather catsuit today, and be an active Avenger.

That would be a great new dimension of character to have on the team. Imagine the dynamic of an attractive, smart, wise older woman, having to deal with all these young studs on the team, maybe even leading them?

The actresses I've been thinking of are Angela Bassett, Mary Steenburgen, Orla Brady, Isabella Rossellini (Janet can actually be Dutch for the European actresses), maybe even Raquel Welch, though I haven't seen what she looks like lately.

Raquel Welch looks like she's had too much plastic surgery. And she would look like the grand matron of the MCU. We don't need that for the Wasp.

The others don't look all that sexy. There are plenty of other older women in their 50s or 60s who look better than those you listed. Diane Lane is one, but she's already Martha Kent. She did look like Janet when she was younger (and still does). Madeleine Stowe is also in her 50s, but she looks more like a villainess than a heroine. She would make a great Madame Masque.

I could list over a hundred older women (we had this "Hotties of Yesteryear" contest before on the celebrities forum before the plug was pulled on all of those tournaments).

Okay, Diane Lane or Madeleine then. I can't imagine Diane has a clause in her contract saying that she can't be in another superhero movie, like Cavill does. We can disagree on the finer details, but agree on the general principle (for me, my suggestions had to be born before 1964).

Oh yeah, Kim Cattrall too.

Well not all of the women from that Hotties of Yesteryear tournament still look good today (that wasn't the point of the contest), but here are some that do (other than those I've already mentioned):

1. Jennifer Beals
2. Teri Hatcher
3. Terry Farrell
4. Brooke Shields
5. Elizabeth Shue
6. Paulina Porizikova
7. Andie MacDowell
8. Carey Lowell
9. Susanna Thompson
10. Sela Ward
11. Lauren Holly
12. Kristen Davis
13. Leslie Anne Down
14. Linda Fiorentino
15. Jaclyn Smith
16. Michelle Pfiefer
17. Daphne Zuniga
18. Lynda Carter
19. Phoebe Cates
20. Juliette Binoche
21. Marisa Tomei
22. Lori Loughlin
23. Mimi Rogers

Jennifer Beals would be perfect as the mother of Janet if Janet is Rashida Jones. Much like Rashida, Jennifer is also mixed.

technically, the mother doesn't have to be mixed; if we're still thinking that Pym is the father. i'm not saying that there's anything wrong with the Jennifer Beals casting.

I think Dr. Evil's point was that JB and Rashida look alike. :cwink:

former Bond Girl and Law & Order D.A, Cary Lowell is 52 and would be my choice. might be a bit tall for Jan, though.

edit: wait, wait... i didn't realize that she was with Richard Gere. that might make this a no-go.

Phoebe Cates and Catherine Bell would be my next two picks.

Whoever suggested Jennifer Beals for Jan… GOD BLESS YOU!! I've loved her for ages, and she'd be completely off-the-wall casting that Feige and Co. would go for.

Plus, I think she'd could play in the Gwenyth Paltrow age range of ambiguous late 30's-40's, even though she's 50. She's always read much younger to me.

For an older "Maria" or Jan… Lynda Carter would be a classic, epic get though. Have you seen her? She looks like she could still kick all our butts!

Jennifer Beals is kind of "not old enough" for my purposes (:woot:) but actually would make a good Wasp, especially as kind of the sexy den mother to all the male Avengers as part of the team. (Yeah, I know how old RDJ is, but mentally RDJ and Stark are like 19).

Jennifer Beals is 50. She's older than Catherine Zeta Jones. She still looks great though.

Sela Ward could be an older Janet too. She's 57 but looks great for her age, and also does resemble the character. She might be a little too southern for the part though, but that's part of her charm.

Catherine Bell would look great too. I think any of these three actresses could seem like the future leader of the Avengers.

But I'd still prefer a younger Janet.

You know me; anybody born after 1964 is my definition of jailbait. :woot:

A friend of mine brought this up and got me thinking. What if Wasp was introduced not as Hank Pym's sidekick/girlfriend but in the present day as Scott Lang's sidekick/girlfriend? His first wife could already be gone and left him with a daughter.

i still think it'd be in her best interests to be linked to Lang; experience-wise. it'd make the transition to Wasp a little easier if her introduction to the costumed life wasn't Scott. :shrugs:

I agree that it might make more sense to have her already a veteran hero when Lang becomes Ant Man. She could still be younger than Pym. Pym was Ant Man in the 70s, maybe somehwere between then and now she became his partner but is still young enough to be a supporting character to Lang. Make her more party of Lang's world rather than Pym's. Because that would eliminate the chance of using her in future films. She should not get forgotten like Rick Jones because of how they fit her in. Not saying they would, I am just worried about loosing the option of a quality character. I also see her as less connected to Pym than a character like Elektra being connected to Daredevil or Ultron being made by Pym. So I wouldn't care if they made her become Lang's girlfriend, or even eventually his new wife or something. Sort of switch her story to Lang's world while still making her origin connected to Pym.

Several of us have already expanded that theory to say that Janet will not only be Scott's Significant Other, but also Hank Pym's daughter. Gives her a valid connection to both Ant-men.

I'm going to be the voice of dissent; just because. I think Jan will be Hank's daughter. but I don't think she'll be Scott's love interest. I think Wright will try to be different and not diminish Jan, that way. Scott's already going to have an ex.

I know that the movie universe is different from the comics. but there's just no part of me that could imagine Jan being anyone's mother.

The fact that they've already talked about Rashida Jones' "chemistry" with some of the cast immediately brings to mind her "chemistry" with Paul Rudd. Plus, Hollywood will be Hollywood, so love stories are a given. That's why I think Rudd and Rashida (or whoever gets the "female lead") will be paired up.
