Drama Damon Lindelof Developing The Leftovers at HBO

I'm curious to see if they explain if Kevin's issues improved at all after his Memorial Day run in with Holy Wayne or if he's relapsed since moving to Miracle.

The church scene was interesting. The brother was cut off before he could talk about his wife feeling better. The town feels like a scary place to live in

What was the significance of the goat being killed/sacrificed at the diner? Seems like a regular occurrence to them.

The second season premiere of HBO’s “The Leftovers” was by far the series’ least-watched and lowest-rated episode yet.

Airing against a full fall slate for the first time in its run, Sunday’s episode drew a mere 0.3 adults 18-49 rating with 713,000 total viewers.

No first season “Leftovers” episode drew fewer than 1.468 million viewers; Sunday’s season premiere, therefore, drew fewer than 50% of the weakest first season audience.

I hope repeats, HBO GO/NOW, and On Demand help it. :csad:

Yeah, the episode was chock full of WTF? moments, like that one and the scene where the girls were sprinting naked through the woods.

Certainly was an unusual way to do a premiere, with the main characters from last season almost completely absent until the very end. I liked it though. The new characters were interesting, especially the father and his Lady MacBeth-esque wife. Also, nice to see Eddie from Family Matters again!

Also, agree with the comments about the opening credits scene. It was clearly intended to be ironic, but it still sucked, especially compared to the original one, which is among the best I've seen in a TV show. It reminded me of when they changed up the intro on The L Word and the song they picked was irritating as hell.

:D I love the Perfect Strangers running gag with Mark faking his departure. Cool cameo by Mark Linn-Baker.

I've read quotes saying that certain townspeople ritually do things they did on the day of the departure to ensure it doesn't happen again. Hence the weirdness like with the woman watering her lawn in a bridal dress and other things. The goat sacrifice seemed like an Old Testament-style appeasement to a higher power. Really funny too.

Yeah me too. I wonder how long Damon and Tom have this mapped out for.

Well, a very controversial first season among fans/critics/general public with a not so well lead up to the premiere by HBO (no dvd release before hand/few ads/little marketing) and a soft reboot in terms of characters... can easily hurt ratings overall.

I feel like HBO though is letting these guys do what they want, but another season might be hard to come by because this show is very niche and has that whole obtuse mystery angler that normal viewers don't like understand even for HBO standards viewers expect Kevin in every episode and so forth.

Yeah, they didn't promote the second season very well at all. They usually marathon shows before a premiere, but they didn't do it here. And HBO has some hard and fast rule about not giving their shows to Netflix, so there's no chance of the weekend bingewatcher crowd discovering it and becoming interested. It's shame because it really is one of the most interesting shows out there. Although I'm concerned that they are going the "just throw weird things in there to be weird" route in the second season. I mean, the guy killing an animal in the diner? What the hell?

Maybe they didn't marathon it because subscribers have the Go?

Possibly. But there may be a lot of subscribers out there that don't use Go. I never have, actually.

Well HBO Latin America did marathon the 1st season the very same day of the premiere.

I've used it some to watch shows that no longer air. I prefer to buy seasons of shows I like because you just never know when a "cloud" might disappear and takes your shows with it. I like hard copies of things I will watch over and over again like Thrones or True Detective.

Yeah this episode was great. Now that we got the set-up out of the way, we can get the ball rolling. That preview for the rest of the season was crazy

Amazing, god... I can't love Nora enough. Also, Patty is going to be crazy fun now.

I love the little banter and honest way Nora/Kevin are, so wonderful for writing purposes. Plus, Jill is actually awesome now.

It's definitely refreshing when a couple is open and honest. Creates a lot less frustration and stupidity. Makes for a better viewing experience.

I loved the ep. The honesty scene was great. I'm glad they ordered the two episodes the way they did. How weird was the sink hole lake scene with that cement block tied to his foot.

Such a great episode last night. The first few minutes felt strange until the diner scene with Jill and Tom.

The single best line was from Kevin's dad about Nora, "I like her better then Lori, try not to drive her into a f***ing cult." :lmao:

Man, Kevin is going off the deep end. Holy Wayne gave him a chance at starting fresh and he's almost slipping back to where he was when the first departure occurred.

I love Margaret Qualley's job handling the character of Jill. She went from confused, moody teenager to happy go lucky in a flashback and is now kind of the rock of the family. She clearly is the only one that came out of season 1 much stronger. Her line in the diner to Tom about being OK was pretty telling about where she's going this year.

I wonder if he did that I to himself or if someone else did it to him

Either subconsciously (Patty) or someone else... "Kevin" is ok and loves his rebooted family [as we saw in the police station] but something inside of him is going to wreck the real Kevin.

Hopefully Nora saves him.

Not just a bit of "sleep walking" that. :p Funny how these wtf moments they keep throwing at us just makes me love this show all the more.
