Daniel Craig confirmed as new James Bond

Exactly. Teri Hatcher, Denise Richards and Halle Berry were just Teri Hatcher, Denise Richards and Halle Berry in a Bond movie.

And yet Izabella Scurropo, Famke Jassen (unknown at the time), Sophie Marceau (not exactly mainstream) and Rosamund Pike were all brilliant. It is an interesting comparrison.

Teri Hatcher was only midly known, and her character was tragically underwritten. But somebody else could have played without any problem. As for Halle Berry... When you think they wanted a spinoff with the Jinx character, who was "Bond's equal", it makes you more skeptical about the whole franchise.

I agree about most of them, except Rosamund Pike. I don't think she was brilliant, but it was probably more due to her character (a female traitor in a Bond movie, twice in a row!) and the fact that she was something like 30 years younger than Pierce Brosnan, which made ehr more like a Bond Lolita.

I really like Rosamund Pike. As Miranda Frost, she was the cold blooded and cruel traitor. For sure she was a bit young, but perfect for the role.

Mildly known? She'd just finished Lois & Clark, which had been the most popular TV show in the world at it's peak.

that was baywatch.

I just saw that press conference with the producers, director, and Daniel Craig...what is UP WITH THE BRITISH PRESS? What was up with that one 'gossip' girl, trying to dig in Daniel's private life.

After witnessing the video, I still don't know what to think of Craig. He seems to be a geniunely nice fellow and he didn't look that bad, but still...he doesn't scream the 'movieverse' James Bond at all. Maybe the book version...but that's it.

no, not the book version. Craig is nothing like the book version. has he black hair ? sophistication ? Is he good looking ? apparently 35 years old ? has he a small scar on the face ?

From the book version he has only the blue eyes. that's small.

Actually according to Who fleming thought of as looking like Bond the book versions good looks are debatable

Yes he is.

No, but it's closer than Roger Moore's, when he has it cut short. It's the same with many blondes: look at Brad Pitt in "Mr and Mrs Smith".

Yes.

He's 37, which is easily close enough.

Two minutes in makeup. Are you seriously suggesting that Eon should only hire an actor that already has the required scar? That would eliminate about 99.99999999% of the potential pool of talent.

Apparently not.

I think you overestimate his sophistication and looks but i agree with the rest

It was Baywatch at one point, it was ER at one point, it was Lois & Clark at one point. Teri Hatcher was at one point the most downloaded woman on the net. The fact is, everybody knew who she was. That's why she was cast.

You are right. It was after Tomorrow Never Dies that she became an has been... And now with DH she made her come back.

Having rethought Craig a bit... I'm starting to get cold to the idea:(

No one can say until we see a trailer, at the very least.

Her character was badly written. I cannot believe MI6 didn't check her more before they hired her. She wasn't much of a convincing traitor, and the traitor idea has been done in three out of four Brosnan films, it was getting repetitive. And she was way too young for a Bond the age of Brosnan. AND I cannot believe she managed to unload his gun. And her death was ridiculous (at the end of a catfight... with Halle Berry!)

The girls can make or break a Bond film. Ursula Andress was probably 30% of the reason that "Doctor No" was such an enormous success, able to get the whole ball rolling. Barbara Bach injected an otherwise absent vein of glamour to "The Spy who Loved Me" (though that film also had Jaws), and Famke Janssen as Xenia Onatopp made Goldeneye for me.

Halle Berry was very poor. I think it is probably right that the franchise should eschew big name actresses, as they erode the mystique of the Bond girls, and the sense of adventure in meeting them. I am also sick of having a mandatory "female equal to Bond" in every film. It seems totally forced, and often melts down the whole narrative thrust of the movie.

Exactly. It's also the dumb version of equality - having a woman who is as good as the man at what he does. A strong female character isn't a copy of the male, she's equally strong but using female attributes. Granted, Bond movies are action and useless screaming damsels-in-distress don't really cut it anymore, but a female version of Bond doesn't cut it either. Wai Lin (Michelle Yeoh) worked because she had different skills from Bond, and they had to team up to get the job done. Jinx doesn't work because she can do everything 007 can and vice versa, so you essentially have two protagonists who can save the day. That's not only dramatically weak, it lessens Bond's character a lot.

Natalya (Izabella Scurupco) worked because she was a strong woman, a smart one, but she reacted believably to the chaos and death around her.
