Justice League Danny Elfman Scoring Justice League - Part 1

Something I have to admit :

Friends and Foes has grown on me...quite a lot. In context, it can work out great too!

Both tracks have grown on me too after being initially underwhelmed. There's a couple of other tracks that I'm greatly interested in. I'm even interested in that song by Sigrid since it's listed at the beginning.

Elfman was in Mexico yesterday and said he only finished the score last week.

Neither of those tracks appear to be the main theme, which is fine by me. They're fine, but you can definitely feel that Elfman is fighting a temp-track.

What do you think were the temptracks?

Something Zimmer related, probably from Man of Steel. Doesn't seem like WB wanted to stray too far from the more dominant sound of these DC films, even when they hired someone like Elfman, who has a distinct "sound".

The last minute composer replacement change (Elfman largely seemed to do the film likely because he had a good time working with Whedon on AOU), probably didn't help either.

Lol, omg, I started a JL soundtrack thread on some other forum focused on music stuff and guess who responded... Hans Zimmer himself! :awesome:

I ask because I don't hear that much temp in his JL music. The themes, the harmonic language, the development, the orchestration, all so un-Zimmerish and quite Elfman-ish.

Oh that's actually awesome if him. What'd he say?

More often than not you won't ever hear the temp music from an Elfman score because he hates temp music with a passion. He was a part of a Hollywood Round table a while ago, and on the topic of temp music, he said he only watches the movie once with temp, if he even listens to it at all.

Temp music is the huge reason why he fell out with Raimi.

Yea, it seems Danny do not listen to temptracks, at least based on what HZ wrote:
Hans Zimmer said:
Another thing I am completely sure off: Danny will not have listened to the temp. That's his rule, and everybody knows it when they hire him. In fact, I'm pretty sure (I've never asked him...) he's never seen the "Batman" movies i worked on - just like I did my utmost to forget his music and do something different when I was following in his footsteps.
Hans Zimmer said:
But I'm telling you - there was no producer interference and he doesn't listen to the temp track. Danny would not stand for that, nor his director.

Very interesting reads. Thank you for sharing! I always enjoy reading/listening to a composer's experience on a movie. Always interesting to see their take as they are essentially the last part of the movie to be worked on in most cases.

Yeah can't say I'm surprised. I do trust Danny though with making a competent score at least, even if it's not the greatest when standing alone, I'm sure it'll complement the movie just fine.

Hoping we do get some continuity between themes. Even if not on the official release of the soundtrack, I could see them doing an Age of Ultron situation and integrating some of Zimmer's themes into the film anyway.

Danny has to listen to the temp track at least once (has said so multiple times) and has mentioned being a fan of Nolan's Batman quite a few times too.

If that music sound Elfman-ish, I don't really hear it. If anything the hero's theme is possibly the most generic piece of music he's written yet. Not bad, but just "there", thankfully it's not the main theme though, and the chord progression very much just makes me a lot of modern film music, hence the Zimmerish comment. Only the middle "melody" section of the hero's theme made me think it was Elfman, and did in fact sound promising enough.

Elfman has also followed temp-track before, otherwise he wouldn't be getting as many assignments as he's still is. Temp music is hugely popular these days with producers, especially as a placeholder, as Elfman has stated in interviews in before. It's why so much music seems to sound the same nowadays.

Elfman parted ways with Sam Raimi on Spider-man 2 because he refuses to follow the temp score, and no... Hero's Theme doesn't really sound Zimmer-isch. Elfman HAS used heavy percussions before. Just listen to his Planet of the Apes soundtrack. And just listen to Friends and Foes - it's old school Danny Elfman!

I won't listen to anything until the actual soundtrack is released.
I love the Batman theme as it is in BvS; I'm just hoping Elfman puts a
touch of his whimsical sound on top of it.

The Superman & Wonder Woman themes need to remain unchanged. They are
literal perfection, especially Superman's. I'm curios as to what they do with the other
heroes. I can see Aquaman having a really epic theme, especially.

Read this interview with Danny about JL score, quite informative and interesting... http://www.billboard.com/articles/n...ice-league-joss-whedon-gus-van-sant-interview

I will wait for the film to get released before listening to the score. Sometimes listening stuff out of context doesn't sound that exciting.

Seeing the clip, Elfman's score sounded great in that scene

I don't think I've heard 'cocky' Elfman ever pay himself a compliment. He's incredibly self deprecating.

So based off that quote the only theme he isn't bringing back from the previous film is Batman's. I'm fine with that, I can't say I really liked it all that much, but even then it only really suited Batman in that period of his life.
