Justice League Danny Elfman Scoring Justice League - Part 2

Honestly the only thing I remember form Elfman's score in JL was when he wen't full oldscool jingles at the start of the Wonderwoman bank scene. It made me want to hide under my seat in shame...

< Coming from someone who's favourite Batman is still '89!

I absolutely hated that part of the score. I don't think it would have been so bad if it didn't happen so soon after the montage, which featured a more modern/techno-y sounding song. Junkie's score would have likely flowed better.

I didn't mind that segment of the score. At least it stood out.

There isn't even any recurring thematic motifs that run through the score like most movie scores have, which is a big problem. The only one is the Flash's but other than that there's barely any recognizable themes of motifs throughout the film.

This^ The Flash theme I quite liked. I actually think it's reminscient of the music that plays when Dr. Manhattan is created (which creates a nice symmetry there) and during Ang Lee's Hulk.

About 40 seconds in.

About 3:40 in.

I was unaware that "Awesome" and "Generic" were musical terms. I get that people like what they like, but I think Elfman's score is being painted a bit broadly for what it actually is.

There are several recurring motifs throughout the score.

There are recognizeable ones like: Wonder Woman's, Batman's, Superman's, Aquaman's, Flash has one, and there's also an actual "Justice League" motif, which sort of build into the main theme as the team is assembled, has their initial battle with Steppenwolf and then moving into and through the final battle.

Even though the Elfman Spider-Man scores are much more highly regarded today the common criticism back in the day was that those scores were lacking recurring recognizable themes/motifs. The same happened with Hellboy II. I just shrug it off as the listeners not paying close enough attention to the scores. Elfman's been writing like that since the mid 90s.

Listening to the WW soundtrack and yeah....would've been great to hear the Themyscira theme in JL too.

More like difference in having time and footage.

Elfman isn’t excused from what he brought out, but context of his output should still be considered.

did anyone make the ending of JL with MoS supes theme again in HD? up in the sky

I was listening to Danny's score again. You can tell it was put together by a guy who's really good at composing. It just does not fit this universe. It's a great score for another movie. :woot:

This vid explains nicely how Rupert Gregson Williams used the original WW theme from BvS by Hans Zimmer and made it work for WW movie. The Original Theme goes through many evolutionary stages, now that's smart musical composing.

Why Danny Elfman couldn't do the same with MoS theme for JL ? At least for Superman scenes ?

The problem with these types of videos is that they're made by amateur editors, using score cues from other movies with a different context. When John Williams reuses themes, he doesn't just plop it into the new film exactly the same, he adapts, modifies and re-orchestrates it to suit the new scene.

To me, as much I love that cue, it doesn't work with Superman's resurrection like that, and I absolutely hate how the Clark piano theme was applied at the end; I'm so glad it wasn't used in JL. I hated how lazily it was applied in BvS, and it made me grow to hate it, which bums me out as I used to love it.

I agree with most of you here that compared to what Elfman delivered (even though I mostly like it), a proper Zimmer/Holkenborg score would've suited the film better. I still have my doubts that Junkie would've been able to create enough thematic depth without Zimmer, though. I would be interested in someday hearing what he came up with.

On The Flash score...I thought Elfman's main theme for the character was fine, but as to where it stands for Flash's solo movie, he needs a better score...albeit...I really liked this beat from the final battle at mark 0:53:

I think it's perfect, and I really dig it, and I think it's way better than the TV series theme.

I mean if that was the theme they were going to use for Flash's main theme in his solo-movie, then I'd be all for it, however, they would need to expand the theme.

P.S...I think I checked, but I don't think I found this soundtrack bit in the official soundtrack.

Elfman said in one of his interviews that he is not developing a complete Flash theme, he has given motifs, and he thinks that the person who will score for Flash movie will use that to develop the full Flash theme.
