Dark Souls II

How is the lore? Is it as dark, emotional and hopeless as DS?

I wasn't aware it was that high a seller, so your right in saying that niche probably isn't the right word. But still, I think the point is still valid enough.

I get what your saying and I agree that it is more limited, however it's still quite popular even for what it is.

Thats because its a well made game/series. People can latch on to titles that are well developed, even if they tend not to be what they'd normally play.

so when you die.......you start looking more like a zombie or whatever....

how do you restore your human look?

Seems like PVP is broken. In Dark Souls II, invasions and summonings are determined by Soul Memory, not Soul Level. Play too much PVP and you won't be able to invade/co-op.

I really wanted to start playing this weekend, my copy just looked at me begging me to play. But with MGSV and Infamous 2 coming out, I want to finish those first (because I know I could do both within the week). When I play Dark Souls I want nothing else that I think about playing.

I'm still having a hard time getting into it......lol.

is there any backstory to your character ( beyond the "cursed" aspect )?

Getting into a Souls game, is not about story, it's about discovery, and overcoming triumph. You have to learn in these games death is not a consequence per se, it's just part of the learning process.

To quote Kotaku's review:

You're not going to have your hand held. You will get stuck. You will get angry, frustrated, amused and want take a sledgehammer to your controller. But once you understand the psychotic dream logic of these games and recognize that at their core they are ultimately fair, you will feel a genuine sense of accomplishment. In gaming, that sensation is all too fleeting

Once you "get" the mechanics of the game, and the nature of death in it, you will get past that and understand the game's not unfair, it's just a different type of mechanic.

That was alway my issue with the Souls games, there just seemed to be really no point in progressing through. I get to kill some big monster...ok. Cool?

But the aesthetics of the games were always super intriguing. Thats why i'll play DSII, even though i wasn't super into the previous games. They're neat looking games and i enjoy the whole Knight/Monsters vibe they have.

yeah......

at least this one seems more "accessible" than the prior games.

and btw.....how do you restore your human appearance after you die and turn hollow or whatever?

How does it have less of a "point" then something like Titanfall? You really don't ever "win" a MP game. You run around and shoot at other people in mechs. What's the point? To get better, to learn, to hone your skills, to discover new things. And with DS you have much more that you can learn. It's about discovery. There is such a wonderment/fear of what's around the corner, and if I can overcome it.

and that's why I'm not that interested in Titanfall, either ( besides not having an X1....lol ).

I prefer games that have more of a story.

not saying Dark Souls II doesn't have a story..........but as you said......the aspect of discovery and exploring is emphasized more.

The lore/story of the first Dark Souls is absolutely brilliant. You should check it out.

It does have a story, it's just not as in your face/sit down and tell you about it all of the time. You have to learn/discover things as you go on. You in a way make part of the story too.

There isn't much of a difference, save for the fact im facing other humans in a game like Titanfall. Outside of the occasional human invader all you are facing here are AI enemies. Which is fine, if there was a point to it. I don't see that in the Souls game. Thats typically not why I play games and its why games like Titanfall don't make up much of my collection. Also if im going to play a game i don't perceive to really have an end goal, I rather play a MP game like Titanfall or Battlefield that features human enemies that im competing against, not AI.

I get that the Souls games have a lore to them, but i don't care enough about whats presented to me, to go digging for it. As i said before, thats why i didnt stick with either Souls game. After a while, i kept asking myself why im fighting these monsters?

Because it's a video game and they're standing in your way.

"Chosen undead leaves the undead asylum to ring the bells of awakening."
Then:
"The flame is fading. You have to go to Anor Londo and get the Lordvessel so you can link the fire and suceed Lord Gwyn."
Then:
"Get all the lord souls so you can open this big door and link the fire."

It's all there.

the PVP community is huge

There are items called Human Effigies you find along the way.

I've been trying to decide which covenant is easiest to max loyalty to (for the Trophy/Achievement) and finally found the Heirs of the Sun covenant yesterday. You get a sun medallion every time you help someone beat a boss (also you're Gold when you get summoned, which is great), and you only need 30 of them. So I spent a good hour+ yesterday, I have 23 right now I think, just need a few more. I also accrued over 120,000 souls in the process :wow:. Gotta plan how to use all of those.

This game is awesome. I have lit one Primal Bonfire so far and beaten maybe dozen bosses. This game is definitely a hybrid of Dark Souls and Demon's Souls, especially with the world design. It is continuous, but doesn't wrap around as neatly as it did in Dark Souls, and being able to warp right away makes it feel more level based on Demon's was.

Just want to keep playing.

speaking of which, have they improved the character creation since the last game as I always thought that was lacking with the characters looking ugly with little options for the most part

If you went into the details in the previous games, it was actually really complex letting you change a ton of tiny options. It's still as insanely detailed as the previous games and I think if you try really hard you can get something that looks okay, but no, characters still look ugly. There are beards this time around, to help hide their hideous-ness.

thanks. so that's what that item is for.......lol.

are they rare items to find/acquire throughout the game?
