Rourke Knocks Cage Out of the Ring

Mickey Rourke will star in The Wrestler, the indie drama that Darren Aronofsky will direct in January, reports Variety.

Rourke will play Randy "The Ram" Robinson," a role that Nicolas Cage had reportedly been set to play.

Aronofsky and Robert Siegel wrote the script for The Wrestler, about an over-the-hill grappler who returns to the ring for one last shot at glory.

Hasn't this movie been done a billion times before?

Even as recent as Rocky Balboa, except instead of taking place over the place of six films, The Wrestler is over the course of one.

With Cage this was going to be better comedy than wedding crashers, anchorman, ricky bobby, dodgeball, and 40 year old virgin COMBINED!

Now with Micky it's gonna be a great dramatic film about a washed up wrestler.

true as i said earlier the "ram" is an alligory for hulk hogan and other older wrestlers still in the business

i'm sure he's actually more based on jake "the snake" roberts. if you know his story at all, you know he is pretty messed up.

this is also weird about rourke. i mean, rourke is a great choice for the role, but cage and aronoksky already attended a Ring of Honor show and interviewed some wrestlers. i wonder if aronosky will return with rourke. they should.

Marisa Tomei has signed on to play the female lead opposite Mickey Rourke in Darren Aronofsky's indie drama The Wrestler, says Variety.

The story centers on an over-the-hill 1980s-era pro grappler (Rourke) who quits the business after a heart attack and moves in with a stripper (Tomei) to build a relationship with her son. Aronofsky and Robert Siegel wrote the screenplay.

Shooting is under way in New York and New Jersey.

The story tells of a 1980s pro-wrestler who risks his life to come out of retirement and fight his old nemesis. Darren Aronofsky's Protozoa Pictures will produce, but it was unclear last night whether he would also direct.

Christ. Can anyone imagine how much of a disaster it would have been if they had actually used Cage? Rourke totally looks like a wrestler there whereas Cage.... Well he had to have a CG six-pack painted on his chest in Ghost Rider...

i'm not a necro fan, but that's still pretty awesome. i bet this is like, during his rise back to his big match or something. i like the real indy feel they are giving it already. i think this is going to show some respect to the wrestling business. i still wonder if they treat wrestling as real or fake in the movie.
