really interesting post Kurosawa!

How do you feel about Lex viewing himself as metropolis' great benefactor? How far can that route be taken? Instead of an outright scheming conniving lex, like spacey or even ruthless ceo interpretation, he thinks he can improve the world better than anyone, and that leads to his eventual villiany. whereas superman would, through his trials, learn his limits and learn his best use to the world.

Lex should see himself as Metropolis master, not its benefactor. He decides what people get and what they don't get. Then Superman comes along and gives to everyone and even more importantly, encourages people do do more for themselves and others.

[sarcasm] Because we ALL know WB is actually a plot to mock the creators of all superheroes. [/sarcasm]

There's one problem with your idea, Kuro.

It's a REBOOT. It's not a sequel to Byrne, its a different version.
You are literally trashing this film before you even know ANYTHING about it, other than 5 characters and the title.

WB has actively worked to screw Siegel and Shuster for years. And I'm hoping this movie has limited influence from Byrne and takes from other sources as well. Nolan didn't get to where he has gotten by being stupid or limited in his focus.

Hey, you seem to hate US for having OUR opinions.

No, I just point where I feel they are wrongheaded and how some of the things people like are contrary to almost 50 years of Superman history, a history that most if not all of you know little to nothing about except the talking points that you were taught by DC. I could care less about you guys one way or another. It's ignorance, lack of respect for the characters history and hardheadedness that I hate.

I like these. Good job Byte.
Well, **** me for having my own opinion.

I dont see how that pic applies to this situation.

Hey, its DC's character and for handling him this way people must be liking it. Their objective is to sell comics after all. And from discussions with other fans, most seem to like the current Superman. You obviously dont and keep accusing us of disrespecting Siegel or whatever.

You're happy with the current Geoff Johns Superman?

If it's heavily influenced by Byrne then it will:

1) Be completely the opposite of the current comics and how Geoff Johns sees the character
2) Be 20+ years out of date
3) Be a slap in the face to Siegel and Shuster, which is maybe part of WB/DC's intention since this movie is being made in part because of their continuing exploitation of them.
4) Not be Superman.

I'll take the good action from Byrne's version, nothing else. Too many of his elements showed complete contempt for the 1938-1986 Superman comics and caused a schism among the Superman fanbase that continues to this day. I'd hope Nolan wouldn't be as stupid as to alienate a good part of the fanbase and instead take the best elements from all eras.

If it's straight Byrne I'll refuse to see it and hope like hell it does even worse than Superman Returns.

Then don`t see it!

I havent read much of it so i shouldnt judge just yet, but from what i hear, it seems like he's a balance and a mix of the best parts of the mythos.

His Clark is a bit too much on the Reeve side for me, and I'm not crazy about the Donner influences, but for the most part it really is a nice mix of everything.

Yeah i've about his Donner influences. Johns is a writer, but he's a fanboy first, and he did grow up with those movies. He is also obsessed with Hal and Barry and that's why Kyle and Wally are nowhere to be found nowadays. :csad:

Kyle is a pretty big part of Blackest Night, and Wally is still around, although more as a supporting character atm. My fave GL and Flash are Alan and Jay, but I like 'em all pretty much.

Barry came back and he instantly became one of the protagonists of Blackest Night, with Wally barely participating. Johns even made him a lantern. Goddamn it Johns!

that was a cool doomsday image at the top of the page. As for direction and story. We are all probably never going to agree fully on what they do. I just hope it will be something i can enjoy and like. For me i still say take the best things from all around the history of the character.

i think geoff johns and grant morrison currently have the best grasp on how to write superman and his surrounding universe. johns does have some donner quirks, but for the most part he's either utilized it well or kept them pretty low key (with the exception of superman secret origins #3, that was just too much). i would certainly hope one or both of these writers could be involved with the script. either at a consultant or actual writer.

Personally, I don't want to see anymore of just one person's vision of superman...use a little bit of all of it I say.

Right. There are so many tellings of the Superman story, even in the comics over the years, other medium, TV shows, movies, even Fliescher and STAS.

I think taking the better recieved parts of all is the best way to go about it.

The movie is not the deffinitve Superman, just another artistic expression of the arguably the most well known fictional character of all time.

Singer, imo, did try some different things like the fleischer feel/look, and certain scenes like supes holding the car up, but he didn't go far enough.

Wow. That doomsday looks like bad news.

Lol, maybe Clark could go for the guido look and personality as the disguise. No way in hell would anyone believe he is Superman.

I feel bad for Routh, he didn't do a bad job, but he can't be cast because then people will think it's a sequel to a suck movie, and we can't have that.

totally green/supermike, they shouldnt base this next film on just one sole take on the character. They should use certain well known stories and elements/traits from the best stuff of pre and post crisis and find a way for it to work all together. That is what i really want them to do and way i keep saying they should do something like that. And i am sure with david/jonah on superman they will do that. They will probably take a few 2-3 well known superman stories as the main bases for the film. Then take the best elements that define the character and go from there with an original story and add their own little twists/mark on the legacy of the character.

i rather agree with this too. and i think thats what geoff johns has been doing in the comics lately. trying to build a definitive superman by taking all the best qualities from different incarnations.

but no matter what is done, people are gonna complain about it. most people who are aware of superman are aware of all the different takes, and everyone has their favorite elements that define superman for them personally.
