DC Animated - All-Star Superman

I heard about this over at Toonzone. This is terrible news. Rest In Peace, Mr. McDuffie. We'll miss you. :csad:

It came out of nowhere. The man was gonna be in LA tommorow for a signing at Golden Apple Comics. Very sad.

I interviewed him at the LA premiere of the movie. Should I cut the interview now out of respect?

McDuffie couldn't have been a nicer guy. This is horrible. I hope this wasn't the fault of the doctors.

R.I.P. McDuffie :(

I just watched All-Star Superman tonight. I was happily surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Didn't expect a great film since their seems to be a lot of negativity behind it, but I enjoyed it a lot.

I only read the first volume of the graphic novel, and thought it was an interesting tale for Superman. Never did pick up Volume 2, after watching this, I really want to now. I thought the animation was great, and complimented the graphic novel nicely, actually thought they improved on it and made it look nicer. I loved the scenes with Clark/Lex. The scene at Jonathan's grave site was nice as well. It did jump around a bit, but I didn't mind it. It's hard to tell a 2 volumes worth of graphic novels in an hour and a half. They did a great job I thought. Then again I haven't read the second volume... soooo yeah.

This one's right behind "Batman: Under The Red Hood" for me. :D

I'm watching this right now. The nitpicks I've read elsewhere don't hold. It's a good companion piece to the comic. A shame McDuffie didn't live longer to hear its accolades.

That's really sad. I really like a lot of his writing and some the the characters he created.

I have to agree that it should go hand in hand with the comic. The video helps explain some of the events that took place during the story. It is understood that due to the time limitations for the DTV, they had to omit certain parts of the story, but that only means that there is room for another video to cover those episodes. The Bizzaro world saga could be a video in itself.

I am watching this with my Best Bud tonight I'll get a review albeit small tomorrow for you guys.

After re-watching the movie I still have to say they dropped the ball on this one. I think that they should have kept the middle issue of A.S.S where they show him go back to the past to see his dad one last time and the Bizzaro fight and Bizzaro world. I also think they should have kept in issue 10 where Superman shows us why the world needs a Superman and where he cures cancer. Those are key issues that made this series great.

Never read the book.

So why is that Bizarro scene so important????

Well to me the Pa Kent story and Bizarro story play a big part as it is more less the telling of Superman coming to terms with his death. The Jimmy Olsen story is also important as it in may ways symbolizes how Superman is afraid to die or doesn't want to die and explains why Jimmy dresses the way he does.

I've got to give them credit...All-Star Superman was far better than I expected. I knew certain elements would have to be cut, but I was surprised the film was able to retain the overall feel, tone and emotional connection of the book. Sure, there are some things I'd have liked to see (Superman Prime, Zibarro, Jimmy's Doomsday adventure), but overall the film really captured the heart of the text.

And the commentary with Grant Morrison is just great.

I watched this last night. I thought it was meh and that's not so say I won't ever watch again.

I liked the story okay. I've never read the comics or graphic of it so I can't make a comparison or say one is better than the other. The animation and voice casting were great as always. It seemed to me that Supes was drawn a little differently than the other characters (may just be me).

I would've preferred a different Superman story. What that would be.....I don't know.

I'm already looking forward to whatever is next in DC's animation pipeline.

Having never read the series...as a movie, I thought it was "okay".

Too many random things going on. I mean they built it up to this idea of Clark facing mortality and at random two kryptonians show up to rule Earth, only to die about 5 minutes after being introduced? They hated then liked Clark in that span.

I was really fascinated with the idea of Superman dying and how he was going to deal with that...I had hoped that was going to be the main theme.

For me, just too many things going on in the film, most of which contributed little to the main idea of Superman dying.

I bought it on blu but can't honestly say i'll be watching it again any time soon.

The chosen segments were handled very well, but I was disappointed that they didn't do the Zibarro segment. I've got no complaints against the voice acting. After all, how can you not love Ed Asner as Perry White (and this years after he played J. Jonah Jameson in the 90s Spider-Man series). Kind of ironic they get James Denton to voice Superman after he played the love interest to former Lois Lane Teri Hatcher on Desperate Housewives.

Still, part of me wishes they'd stop trying to adapt such complicated stories, name recognition be damned.

Not 100% faithful but it was so well done I really didn’t mind. Glad I bought it and made it a part of my collection.

I expected the movie to be more epic- the Zibarro section really impressed me in the comic book- but the movie turned out to be kind of quiet, with quirky elements that felt more random than they did in the book. It didn't really have a sense of urgency, even with Superman dying. There was a simplicity to the book but there was a lot happening- one strange event straight after another- and it added to all the craziness and randomness of Superman's last days. Stuff like Bizarro World also gave a strange edge to the Superman character.

To me it started to feel like it slowed down when Superman and Lois were in the Fortress of Solitude, then, yes, it did start to feel episodic and I found myself losing interest. I am curious how I would've felt watching it not having read the book. I know they had to take stuff out... I will watch it again to see how I feel without expectations from the book.

Not long ago I checked out the books from my library. I am in no way a Superman fan, but I wanted something to read and I am a Grant Morrison fan so I picked them up. Really enjoyed them. Probably the best Superman story that I've ever read.

Watched the movie twice last night and really enjoyed it as well. Despite the liberties taken I thought it was pretty darn good. Like all of you I missed the Bizzaro World part, but overall it was a great film.

Got a bit bummed out when I saw that McDuffie was the writer. He will be missed. I used to come home from school and watch Static Shock when I was younger.

Is there a reason why these direct to DVD movies have to be so short? Why can't we get a full 2 hour movie for any of them? It's not like the stories are lacking in material. They could have easily added another 15-30 mins and done the Bizzaro and or Doomsday stories. Is it a budget thing?

It's mostly a budget thing.
