Project History
The long gestating Batman project is given a boost in 1983 , as Steven Spielberg agrees to helm the project with Lawrence Kasdan penning the film.

With Lucasfilm teaming up with Warner Brothers pictures , George Lucas and Michael E. Uslan serve as the film's executive producers .

Batman And Robin : The Motion Picture , goes into production in 1985 with Harrison Ford attached to star as The Caped Crusader, Robin Williams cast as The Joker , and newcomer Sean Astin cast as Robin , The Boy Wonder.

Rounding out the cast are Cybill Shepherd as Julie Madison , Sean Connery as Alfred Pennyworth, and Charlton Heston as James Gordon .

Script
Taking a page from child centric films like ET and Goonies , Robin aka Dick Grayson, is our gateway into The world of The Batman , and is the film's central focus.

The Batman of Kasdan's script, is an already established crime fighter in a retro ,1940s world, complete with The Batsignal and an established Rogues gallary.

The film's antagonist is The Joker , who is based heavily off of his more sinister characterization of the early 1940s , as opposed to the more impish figure of The 1960s Tv series.

Batman's love interest is the sharp tongued socialite Julie Madison , who doesn't entirely buy Bruce's aloof and oblivious act .

The audiences gets hints that she may indeed have figured out that Bruce is Batman , but the character never comes out and says it.

Following the comics , Dick Grayson is a circus acrobat, whose parents are murdered during a
performance, though in this iteration , The Joker, dressed as a circus clown is the one who kills
The Flying Graysons, while Bruce Wayne and Julie Madison , watch on.

The 12 year old Grayson is adopted by the aloof and mysterious Bruce Wayne, and it isn't long before Grayson begins to discover that his new Guardian , is more than meets the eye.

Predictably, Grayson eventually finds out Batman's true identity , wants to get revenge on The Joker but eventually discovers that justice, doesn't mean vengeance .

The boy becomes Robin, and The Dynamic Duo , is born.

Kasdan's script plays very much like a retro serial akin to The Indiana Jones films , complete with daring do , big set pieces, and 1940s style dialog.

While the film is easily more serious than the TV Show 20 years earlier, the film's tone is more akin to the pulp comics of the 30s and 40s, than Frank Miller or Denny O'Neal's darker takes on the character.

While the goal is to portray Batman more seriously, Spielberg and the producers are wary of going so dark that it alienates Parents and prevents children from seeing the film.

The film is targeted primarily at families , so the Batman of the script isn't The Dark Knight, but is instead, The Caped Crusader.

The film also features a teen Barbara Gordon who serves as Grayson's peer and crush throughout the film .

Project History
With Superman 3 and Supergirl both in development , and with both scripts unsatisfactory, The Salkinds decides to forgo Superman 3 for the time being and to use Supergirl as a launchpad for Superman 3's story.

Supergirl would be released in 1984 , with Superman 3 following in 1985 .

Helming Supergirl ,would be director Joe Dante , and despite prior disputes , Tom Mankiewicz, would agree to rewrite the film .

With 19 year old Helen Slater already attached in the lead role , fellow up and coming actress Annette O'Toole , who had been eyed for Superman 3, instead joins Supergirl , as Lana Lang .

Character actors Christopher Lloyd and Joanna Cassidy agree to play the film's villains, Jax Ur and Faora , while newcomer Matthew Modine is cast as Supergirl's love interest .

Meanwhile , Christopher Reeve welcomes the chance to play a mentor role in the new film.
Margot Kidder's Lois , However is absent, while The Salkinds decide what to do with her character for Superman 3.

Script
The Salkind's original ideas and scripts are tossed out and a page one rewrite is mandated for the film.
Dante and Mankiewicz both think the original script is " awful", and basically only leave the title, and change everything else .

The new script finds Kara Zor El a survivor from Krypton , whose escaped due to the assistance of the idealistic Zor El and Alura .

However, it's taken her decades to arrive on an Earth, shortly after the events of Superman 2 , in which her Cousin Kal-El is already Superman while Kara, who is technically older, is a child.
Ultimately, she's taken in by Lana Lang and Pete Ross, friends of Clark Kent who know that he's Superman.

Clark wants her to have a choice he doesn't have, in leading an anonymous , normal existence , without the burden of the world on her shoulders.
Mirroring Superman The Movie, we see the child grow into a teenage girl putting the story in 1984 , with her technically arriving in 1978.

As opposed to attending a girl's school as in the original script , she goes to Smallville High as Kara Kent , and falls for the big man on campus Whitney Foreman, who also begins to care for the mysterious girl in town.
However, her quite life in Smallville is interrupted by Kryptonian Scientists Jax Ur and Faora whose ties to Zor- El only fuel their obsession with the Girl Of Steel.

As the two Kryptonians arrive in Smallville searching for Kara , She must don the identity of Supergirl in order to protect those she cares about .

10 year old Kara : Drew Barrymore

Love to see another reimagining of Kara's first headlining gig. I had fun integrating Mr. and Mrs. Danvers into my version, but having Lana and Pete look after Kara is a nice way to streamline things. Plus, it's an intriguing idea to add Kara to the mix retroactively.

I'm on the fence about bringing in more Kryptonian baddies after the last episode showcased Zod and the gang, but Lloyd and Cassidy would sure be fun to see. I think that's why I kept Faye Dunaway for my version, and even then I had her conjure Peter O'Toole to Earth to bring the story together.

Project History
Several years after Superman 4 : The Quest For Peace and Batman And Robin, Warner Brothers decides to move ahead with a Batman Vs Superman film penned by Andrew Kevin Walker .

However, there's a twist . Producer Jon Peters advocates for the film to be a sequel to Superman 2 and Batman Returns , ignoring both franchises subsequent sequels.

Thus , Superman would be the Reeves version and Batman would be the Keaton version.
While some factions advocate for new versions of the characters, WB execs ultimately feel , the better beat is to go with the two beloved and established versions of the characters as opposed to gambling on new versions that the audience doesn't identify with.

Peters also wants Burton to direct , though Richard Donner is considered as a back up.
Burton is hesitant and reluctant to direct Batman Vs Superman given his experience with
Superman Lives.

At the same time, he would prefer Keaton to return to the role of Batman as opposed to having a new actor play the same version .

Keaton however, is uninterested in returning to The Batcave .

Still Burton is intrigued with revisiting the Batcave and perhaps coming at Bruce Wayne from a different angle than he did a decade earlier .

Burton is also interested in the contrasts between Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne and fells that he could bring something unique to the story.

The announcement of a Batman Vs Superman film directed by Tim Burton is controversial enough in fandom, but when it's announced that the film would be a continuation of The Burton and Donner films, fandom is divided .

And with new leads on tap to take over the roles of Batman And Superman , Batman Vs Superman promises to be an event film in the Summer of 2004.

Script
With the film now taking place in the same continuity as The Burton and Donner films, Walker's original script undergoes massive changes .

The Lana Lang character and subplot is tossed in favor of Lois Lane having a more prominent role as Clark's estranged Ex Wife

Instead of Bruce's fiancee Elizabeth , being killed at the hands of The Joker, it's Selina Kyle , having reconciled with Bruce in the years since Batman Returns , with Bruce Planning to marry her .

Lex Luthor would remain the film's central villain, having cloned the Joker to wreik havoc both on Gotham and Metropolis , though in this iteration , he wouldn't be the CEO , but the criminal mastermind and mad scientist of Hackman's version.

Eve Teashmacher and Otis return in the film as Luthor's lackeys , while Alfred , unlike in Walker's version, is alive and well.

References to Robin and Batgirl are dropped all together with Batman Forever and Batman And Robin, being unconnected to Burton's continuity .

Walker's Superman is very much Donner's Superman, hopeful, earnest , yet longing to be as happy .

By the same token, Walker's Batman is Burton's Batman , brooding, restless, aloof, and very much in the shadows.

Superman / Clark Kent : Keanu Reeves

In a casting announcement that stuns Hollywood and Fandom, Keanu Reeves accepts the role of Clark Kent aka Superman .

The casting is met with backlash from online fandom , with many feeling he's wrong for the part.
Yet others, impressed by his work in The Matrix films, decide to reserve judgement .

Batman / Bruce Wayne : Johnny Depp

Ironically enough, Depp's casting is received better than Reeves, though many fans still feel that Keaton should have reprised the role, instead of recasting a younger actor .

Burton , however, feels there are enough similarities between Keaton and Depp ,that the audience could believe that they were the same Bruce Wayne,

Catwoman / Selina Kyle : Angelina Jolie

Taking up the whip from Michelle Pfeiffer , Jolie if anything, is perceived as an obvious choice as opposed to the off beat choices of Reeves and Depp .

However, her character's fate remains secret from The GA .
Burton wants to shock audiences who feel The Catwoman character will play a big part in the film, when really the role is short .

Lois Lane : Courteney Cox

Hot off of the scream films, Courteney Cox jumps at The chance to play Lois Lane, and her resemblence to Margot Kidder further helps the audience associate Cox's version with The Donner film.

Lex Luthor : Russell Crowe

The Academy award winning actor agrees to play the part of Superman's nemesis , though he doesn't do a Gene Hackman impersonation.

Instead, Crowe makes the role his own in bringing a restrained and underlying menance , like a volcano ready to explode .

Joker : Benicio Del Toro

Like Crowe, Burton doesn't demand Del Toro capture Nicholson's essence .

Instead , Del Toro plays up Joker's unpredictability, and his role as sadistic agent of chaos, shattering the lives of Clark and Bruce , and forcing them into a showdown.

Alfred Pennyworth : Christopher Plummer

Plummer takes over the role of Alfred from Michael Gough, Bringing his own bite and sarcasm to the part in contrast to Depp's Brooding , Bruce Wayne.

Maybe a bit out of the box with the casting, but I think Mark would've been good in the role for how Gordon was written in the script, and it would've fit the way the Smallville producers used to cast Superman alum actors for the show for the purpose of fan service.

Project History
After several false starts , and abandoned scripts , Christopher Reeve decides not to return to the Superman franchise .

With The Salkinds no longer involved and with Jon Peters as the film's sole Producer , Peters decides the best way to move forward is to produce a 5th film with an all new cast .

David Koepp and Sam Hamm eventually pen, Superman 5, featuring the long awaited debut of Brainiac and the return of Lex Luthor .

Directing the film is Mrs. Doubtfire and Home Alone director Chris Columbus .

Demi Moore signs on to play Lois Lane, Dennis Hopper joins as a more sinister Lex Luthor, John Lithgow is cast as the film's main villain Brainiac , and while TV and Film actor Billy Campbell signs on to don the red cape as The Man Of Steel.

In casting coup, Anthony Hopkins agrees to portray the role originated by Marlon Brando .

Story
Taking place several years after the events of Superman II , The past comes back to haunt Clark Kent when Jor El's creation , Brainiac , emerges in Smallville , decades after Clark's ship crash landed on Earth.

As the creature Brainiac possesses Clark's old mentor , Professor Milton Fine, Superman must face not only his father's mistakes , but the mentor who holds the keys to all of his secrets.

And as Brainiac seeks The Fortress Of Solitude , to launch his take over of Earth, General Sam Lane wants to capture Brainiac , in order to reveal the question of everyone's minds ," Who Is Superman ? ".

Project History
After the box office success of Superman 2, Warner Brothers Studios decides to play a much larger role in securing the future of The Superman franchise .

The Studio decides to buy the Salkinds out for the TV and Film rights to The Man Of Steel , but agree that the Salkind's can remain on future projects as Executive Producers .

After The Salkinds ink the new deal with Warner Brothers, the studio is able to secure director Steven Spielberg and Producer Frank Marshall to produce make the next Superman film.

However , the project takes a surprising turn when it's decided that the next film would be a team up film , introducing Batman and Robin .

Superman And Batman would be penned by writer and director Lawrence Kasdan with The Newman's not asked to return after scripting Superman 1 & 2 under The Salkind's.

The film would serve as a spring board to an already in development Batman film written by Tom Mankiewicz.

Additionally, Warner Brothers hopes that the door will be open to adapting it's other library of characters.

The announcement of the development of a Superman And Batman film , developed by Steven Spielberg, is met with excitement and curiosity among fans of the comics .

At the same time, other comic fans fear the new film would reflect the campyness of the 1960s TV show as opposed to the more serious nature of the Adams and O'Neal comics run.

Despite speculations and a concerned letter writing campaign, Warner Brothers moves forward with their plans to expand the DC Cinematic Universe.

The plan is for the studios to film 3 films back to back , with Superman And Batman being released in the Summer Of 1983, Superman : Part III , being released in The Summer Of 1984 , and The Batman being released in the Summer Of 1985.


Script

The film would feature an already established 30 something Batman with a teenaged Robin already at his side fighting crime.

It's decided that the characters origins would be explored in the spin off film , and that the enw story should hit the ground running in terms of having Batman And Superman meet for the first time.

While a Joker and Lex Luthor team up is originally considered , Spielberg , Marshall, and Kasdan decide instead to save The Clown Prince Of Crime for a Solo Batman film.

Additionally , Hackman's lack of interest in returning to the Lex Luthor role also provides the production the opportunity to keep Luthor out of the new film.

At the same time , the next logical Superman villain , Brainiac , would seem out of place in a Batman And Superman team up film, and is , instead, saved for Superman : Part III.

Ultimately the creative team decides to ultilize the global terrorist Ras Al Ghul along with the half human , half cyborg Metallo, who would serve as Ras Al Ghul's right hand muscle.

In terms of our heroes , the film would find Clark Kent the odd man of as Lois Lane begins a world wind romance with the dashing Bachelor, and Humanitarian, Bruce Wayne .

As The Millionare comes to Metropolis to help rebuild the city after Zod's attack , an interview leads to a romance with Wayne , and for the first time, Lois can see a future without Superman.

However , when Ras Al Ghul and his organization plot wipe Metropolis off of the map , The Man Of Steel , and The Mysterious Caped Crusaders must work together to stop a common enemy.

The Batman of the script would be much more of the serious , James Bond esque ,detective, of The O'Neal and Adams era , while Robin would be the wise cracking daredevil of the comics .

While Reeve is hesitant to return to the role , he jumps at the chance to work with Steven Spielberg, and is intrigued by the idea of his Superman having to work with a very different type of hero .

Batman / Bruce Wayne : Harrison Ford

For Spielberg, there's only one choice , his Indiana Jones lead , Harrison Ford .
While Ford is resistant out of fear of being type cast , Spielberg convinces the star that the film won't be a replay of the 1960s series and that his Batman would be more akin to Philip Marlowe and Zorro .



Robin / Richard Grayson : Tom Cruise

While several young and later to be known actors try out for the part , It's Risky Business actor Tom Cruise who Spielberg chooses , seeing him as a great contrast to Reeve and Ford.

Lois Lane : Margot Kidder

After her tensions with The Salkinds, Kidder gladly returns to the role of Lois Lane with Spielberg at the helm.

Ras Al Ghul : Christopher Lee

While Frank Langella is originally considered , Spielberg wants an older actor who could go toe to toe with Ford and Reeve .
Ultimately, Christopher Lee agrees to play the antagonist for the film.

Alfred Pennyworth : Sean Connery

In another surprise casting , Sean Connery agrees to play Alfred Pennyworth, who , in this iteration , play an active role as mentor and trainer to both Bruce and Dick .

In the aftermath of Batman And Robin , and with a new Superman film in turnaround, Producer Jon Peters turns to Bruce Timm and Paul Dini to create a interconnected, DC, Cinematic Universe.

With Peters serving as the ultimate boss, Timm and Dini plot out a roadmap in an attempt to loosely replicate what they team did with the DC Animated Universe .

With characters such as Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, being rebooted from scratch , the team produces several director driven films featuring the decades hottest filmmakers , culminating in the Crossover event film : The Justice League.

In the aftermath of Batman And Robin , and with a new Superman film in turnaround, Producer Jon Peters turns to Bruce Timm and Paul Dini to create a interconnected, DC, Cinematic Universe.

With Peters serving as the ultimate boss, Timm and Dini plot out a roadmap in an attempt to loosely replicate what they team did with the DC Animated Universe .

Goyer slips through! I would love if he did still contribute to this take on Batman and his origin. Walker is uneven but could make really intense and involving take on the Batman characters especially the Joker and Catwoman.

Weisz and Hoffman could be great as Lois and Lex, respectively really appealing/admirable and surface-appealing/hypocritical.

Josh Hartnett sure was real popular really briefly, I get the sense that though he mostly enjoyed it he didn't really get why he had become so popular. It's also particularly interesting how Ryan Gosling, though I did sometimes find him annoying, did take pretty different kinds of roles and so has had much more enduring success.

Project History
Much to the objections of Christopher Nolan and The Superman Returns team, WB moves full steam ahead with a Justice League Mortal film .

However, the film's original director George Miller departs the project due to creative differences as Producer Jon Peters , is unimpressed by Miller's casting choices .

Warner Brothers turns to director JJ Abrams who had written Superman : Flyby , now confident that he can handle the director's position for a major tentpole film.

Abrams brings along his Lost screenwriters Damon Lindeloff , Alex Kurtzman, and Roberto Orci to pen the film.

Script

As JJ Abrams boards the project , he wants to smooth things over with Christopher Nolan and to assure the director that he won't tread on any ground that Nolan and Goyer may potentially cover in their films.

Abrams insists the story would be set in an entirely different continuity with a group of older JLA members who wouldn't face off against Talia Al Ghul .

This not only eliminates any connections to Batman Begins, but firmly establishes this Dark Knight as a grizzled , middle aged , veteran , as opposed to a young crime fighter as in previous scripts .

At the same time, Abrams steers clear of any villain in Batman's Rogues Gallery as not to pigeon hole Nolan's future plans .

Maxwell Lord is also jettisoned from the script, and is replaced with a CEO Lex Luthor ,who discovers their identities and uses Batman's Brother Eye technology against the team to destroy them once and for all.

The CEO version of Lex Luthor would further distance the project from Superman Returns .

In another break from Superman Returns, and taking a page from Andrew Kevin Walker's Batman Vs Superman script, Clark would be broken up with Lois , and instead would be in a Romance with Wonder Woman .

In the script , the team has been together for a decade with Batman becoming much estranged and isolated from the rest , having become wary of the groups unchecked power, and creates Brother eye as the ultimate equalizer .

The Flash is still the scripts central focus and our in to a world with Meta Humans, aliens, and crime fighters as opposed to the more grounded takes of Batman Begins and
Superman Returns .

Abrams envisions the film as a "one off" and a "last harrah " story for these heroes ,as opposed to a launching point for spin offs .

Martian Manhunter is replaced with Hawkgirl , but otherwise the team consists of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman , Flash , Green Lantern, and Aquaman .

Project History
With Keaton unwilling to Return to the role of Batman, and with Schumacher having second thoughts about directing the next Batman film without Keaton, Batman 3 is plunged into turmoil.

While several drafts have been written, there's no lead star and no director .
Ultimately Warner Brothers turns to Jon Peters hoping that he can salvage the project .

Jon Peters turns to In The Line Of Fire director Wolfgang Peterson to helm Batman 3 .

The director agrees on the condition that the film be written by Andrew Kevin Walker who penned In The Line Of Fire .

WB , desperate to get the new film going , whether it's kid friendly or not, consider Peterson and Walker a good pairing for the new film.

However, there's still the issue of who will play Batman . Peterson, Peters, and Warner Brothers feel that a big name is needed to follow the popular Keaton .

In a move that shocks Hollywood and DC fans, in June of 1993, Harrison Ford is announced as the new Batman , taking over the role from Michael Keaton .

The iconic actors casting is met with praise by many fans who never bought Keaton as Batman .

Other fans however are dismayed by the radical change and are wary of the actors age , being a decade older than Keaton .

All in All, the casting brings new excitement to the project and Batman Continues, goes into production in 1994 for a Summer 1995 release date.

Script
With Schumacher no longer on the project , The Batchler's and Goldsmen's scripts are largely abandoned with only a very few elements making it into Andrew Kevin Walker's new draft .

Ironically enough, despite parental and advertisers complaints about Batman Returns, the new film leans heavily into being a darker and more grounded psychological thriller , inspired by films such as Silence Of The Lambs and Seven, as opposed to The Richard Donner Superman films.

At the same time, unlike the first two Burton films, the Batman character would be the focus as he now finds himself at as crossroads and ready to walk away from the cape, just as the city needs him most.

Andrew Kevin Walker's script is set several years after the events of Batman and Batman Returns with a much older and more seasoned Bruce Wayne , having gone through his rogues gallery several times over , and ready to move on .

In another departure from earlier drafts , Two Face is jettisoned in favor of The Scarecrow and The Riddler as Batman's two Foes.

Walker takes Burton's original concept for Robin from Batman returns and makes the character a young auto mechanic, whom Batman goes to and whose served as his eyes and ears on the streets of Gotham.

In the climax of the film, the kid would prove his worth setting the stage for him to become Robin in the future.

Chase Merdian goes from being a therapist to being a harden cop wary of the Batman's effect on the city , and Barbara Gordon would be featured in a pivotal supporting role , being at the mercy of The Scarecrow and prompting the Batman to continue until he finds Barbara.

Story
Taking place a decade after the events of Batman Returns, a middle aged Dark Knight just barely brings down the Riddler for the last time , and is resolved to hanging the cape and cowl once and for all.

But on the eve of Bruce's 50th Birthday, the daughter of an old friend is vanishes at the hands of a mysterious killer known as The Scarecrow .

With several people vanishing , and fear gripping Gotham City, The Bat and a cynical police detective must seek help from The Riddler and get in the mind of a killer, before he strikes again.

Saga History
After the failures of Superman 3 and Superman 4: The Quest For Peace , Warner Brothers grows wary of allowing The Salkind family to drive the Superman Franchise into the ground .

As The Salkind's begin plans for a Superboy tv series , WB intervenes, and decides to buy all of the rights to Superman , outright .

Ultimately, the offer is too resistible for the Salkinds to reject.

Warner Brothers attains the both the TV and Film rights to The Man Of Steel and begin to produce several more Superman films over the next several years .

Surprisingly, Christopher Reeve agrees to return and becomes a creative voice with a active role in the upcoming sequels .

A new trilogy of films is produced ,in addition to the highly anticipated Batman/ Superman crossover film .

The new films explore The Man Of Steel comic myths in addition to more of his rogues gallery and supporting characters absent from the first 4 films.

THE KILMER BATMAN ERA ( 1998-2005)

Saga History
With the Batman Franchise back on track after the smash success of Batman Forever , Val Kilmer is set to return for several more appearances as The Dark Knight.

Over the next several years, Kilmer goes on to appear as Batman in two more direct sequels, and three spin off films .

Despite his onset tensions with director Joel Schumacher, the pair reunite for 1998's Batman The Caped Crusader , while director Wolfgang Peterson takes over the Batman franchise with Batman Unmasked .

Kilmer's spin off appearances include 1999's Batgirl, 2002's Batman/ Superman : World's Finest , and 2003's Justice League Of America
