Just out of curiosity...why would it be impossible for him to stay dead forever?

Number 1 he is a major comic book superhero and there is not one such here that has ever died that has stayed dead.Number 2 Batman [Bruce Wayne] is a cash cow for DC comics...if I'm right I would guess that at least 35 to 40% of DC yearly profits are from the sales of Batman related merchandise world wide.

Didn't they try this with Superman too?
This just seems like a desperate attempt at trying to reinvigerate the character, but what DC can't seem to understand is that the problem lies not with the character (who is consistently voted the greatest comic book character) but with lame writing that doesn't do the character justice.
Maybe if they didn't produce so many bat-titles they could concentrate on doing, say two really good books every month.
