DC Relaunching Everything?

Much like a super strong alien throwing regular people around like rag dolls.

Except that the super-strong alien throwing people around like rag dolls wasn't depicted that way at all. Which is pretty much the point.

As more of these title descriptions come out, it's becoming increasingly obvious that very little continuity is actually changing--the GL books seem to be direct continuations. I'm relieved.

At first i was thinking that maybe this relaunch was going to condense the line a little bit, but it looks like it'll pretty much be the same as before. Green Lantern has 4 books coming out. In that case I'm anticipating that there will still be 10 different bat-books and Superman books.

I am sort of cautious to make judgments about this.

It partially has to do with the fact that I, like others, sort of follow more than one canon. There are the canons of the comic books and other media, but then there is that canon in your head of what you think a character's history and attitudes should be. Like, I think Clark and Lois should be married, but if that got "One more day'd"*, that wouldn't necessarily make the "old" or "new" stories any less or more valid to me. It merely would mean that DC's current continuity differs from "my" continuity. Fine, but it's like this:

If it's a good story, it's a good story. If the story is good, the continuity changes would be annoying at most. However, if the story is bad, continuity changes would be infuriating.

So yeah, I'm basically waiting to find out what exactly will be going on, and, more importantly, if the stories will be any good.

*BTW, has that even been officially stated or implied in DC materials beyond trying to find context in words like "younger" or such, or is it just something that has sort of entered the internet zeitgeist to the extent where everybody thinks it's true even though weren't sure?

get to see some Golden and Silver Age comics that would blow your mind with the level of quality and the variety of genres.

Okay... I'm gonna say "Who cares?" to this. The quality stuff you're talking might have some merit, as might the whole artistic ******** that you're trying too, though I find it hilarious that you chose The Beatles (whose best stuff is their bubblegum pop style stuff and even that isn't all that good), Picasso (possibly the worst guy to happen to art in a long time) and Orson Welles (who despite having made the "greatest film ever made" couldn't be bothered to make it remotely entertaining) as a way of elevating Siegel and Shuster (who just mined ancient legends to come up with Superman, which arguably would've happened without them anyway, and they had no real hand in what makes the character great in the first place). But that's besides the point.

Anyone who knows anything about comics knows that there were more than just superheroes throughout the medium's history. Even now, there are comics that don't involve spandex-wearing heroic demigods. The thing is, aside from a very select few, I (and many others) don't care to read that stuff.

The comics medium works for a select type of story, which is an ongoing one. A story that isn't contained to just one event in a character's life, but a story of a world. This isn't something you can get with a movie or a novel, and even series of movies and novels can't evoke the same thing comics can. And superheroes rule the roost because they are the only genre that can support this at the level of success that they do (with the notable exception of The Walking Dead, which has its novelty in the fact that it's an exploration of the world after a zombie apocalypse that lasts more than 2 hours or so).

So, you can go cry into your Wild West Comics and your Tales To Terrify because of it, but face facts, if it's not a superhero comic, chances are most people don't care.

Did it take you awhile to think that one up? 'Cause it seems incredibly well-crafted. :o

EDIT: Eh, nvm. I don't even think I want to waste any time for something like that.

For all I've seen people really hate that DC is doing this. I'm actually pretty excited to see what kind of stories they can tell. My friends hate it but I still think some really cool things can come from this. Hopefully Barbara gets her legs back. And Morrison's run is erased. But I really hope Action and Detective stay for Batman and Superman. And please keep Morrison away from Supes too. I just don't like that guy. Keep Paul Cornell on Supes and Scott Synder on Batman.

It drives me nuts that there are three Firestorm designs on the cover to Firestorm #1, and every single one of them is inferior to Jamal Igle's OYL design.

What the what

Why are there three designs for the same character on the cover

Because each of them will be able to transform into Firestorm and then with their powers combined they are Captain Planet! or well I guess Super Firestorm?

You mean the latest pre-Flashpoint design? I was thinking the same thing. Also, that ridiculous Booster Gold desing. Its like they HAD to change things for change's sake.

So what's going on with those 3 firestorms? Is it a symbolism of the two guys inside Firestorm's body, or are we having so many FS?

It does? That's interesting. Because in the past decade all we have been seeing is a reversion to the status quo of the Silver Age. These characters have existed for 70 years and the writers are reluctant to let them progress beyond 30 years old. It seems to me that they want to have their cake and eat it too. You can't have an ongoing continuity if you don't want the characters to change. And that's why mainstream comics are **** now. Because every year we get stories that will 'change characters forever' but it never sticks. When it does, you get what is happening now. A great big reboot.

If you read early Marvel then it seems that they actually were doing what you are saying. Peter Parker ages from 15/16 to 20 within 60 issues. He leaves High School, goes to College and has several relationships. Reed Richards and Susan Storm get married and have a baby. The original X-Men graduated and a new team took their place. And so on. But now Peter Parker has made a deal with the devil so that the last 20 years of comics has never happened.

DC was more like Disney in that their characters were stuck in a timeless setting like Mickey Mouse and arguably they were better off that way. You have characters like Clark Kent being written as if they were Peter Parker and it turns out that his life is pretty boring when he isn't flying through space fighting aliens that shrink cities. Because when status quo is god, you can't build a believable universe in an ongoing story.

This is the real reason why comics are dying. Because new readers don't see why they should give a ****.

Not quite; the design changed again when Ronnie Raymond came back after Blackest Night. This is the design I'm referring to:

Igle really knocked it out of the park. The design of Firestorm's symbol has always been unbelievably lame and dated, and he was able to design a cool icon that looks modern while still looking like it belongs to Firestorm.

The designs on the Firestorm #1 cover are completely inferior by comparison.

My guess is that the design will change based on whether it's Ronnie or Jason in the driver's seat, so to speak. Who knows what the deal is with the third one.

you know what....i just want superman to look like superman. wonder woman to look like wonder woman. batman to look like batman.

at least give me that...and i could swallow this a lot easier.

Yeah that's the one i was talking about. Wasnt it the latest one?

Charged up FS maybe?

Ronnie's and Jason's look crappy because they're dilutions of the main Firestorm design. That had a nice balance of red and yellow, colors that work well together. Ronnie's is way too much red with not enough yellow and Jason's is way too much yellow with not enough red. The other one's just an ugly design, colors notwithstanding.

I think he's trolling us. I mean why else would he replace those great designs with that crap?
