Didn't want to make 2 threads so close together but it caught my eye when I was looking at the films released in 1989, that it was the year when two underwater Alien "rip-offs" were released, I've seen both more than once and both are shlocky, but the question is, which was better? :D

VS

Hehe, funny, I watched both of them a couple of days ago ( saw them in theater back in the day ).
It's to be noted that DeepStar Six budged was a fraction of Leviathan.

Yeah, Leviathan had a $20M budget and the better known cast, and it has arguably the better ending, but I'm still torn between the two and their oldschool 80's schlocky goodness. :D

Between the two I think it is Deepstar Six but they are so identical that I often remember scenes from one movie as being scenes in the other.

Same, I do get them intertwined as they are so similar.

For me, Leviathan by far. Bit more polished and fantastic actors that carry the film very well. Not that either is a great movie, mind you. Also saw them both in cinemas back in the day. And yes, Abyss blows them both out of the water (pun intended).

Deep Star Six got the better trailer tough.

Speaking of this little "Alien but underwater" trend from the late eighties... There is a spanish movie by the director of Supersonic Man and Slugs called The Rift ( AKA Endless Descent) that is soooooooooo bad its allmost a must see of terribleness in cinema.

Actually haven't seen either of those, definitely want to now. Always room in the world for some sucky Alien ripoffs.

I'll go with Leviathan myself, but I have always enjoyed DeepStar Six as well. The cast of Leviathan alone is pretty damn awesome, especially seeing Peter Weller, Richard Crenna, Ernie Hudson, Daniel Stern and Meg Foster all in the same film. It's such a criminally underrated film IMO.

I only remember Deep Star Six. Probably because Cindy Pickett from Call To Glory and Nia Peoples from FAME were in it.

Leviathan by a nautical mile. Better monster, better escalation, extremely politically incorrect (but earned) ending.

I voted Leviathan but I have a fondness for DS6 SFX, I like the look and feel of small scale maquettes/miniatures.
Also : Boz from Riptide and Miguel Ferrer.

I decided to give them both another watch this week before I decided, I think Leviathan just edges it, there's a bit more too it, with slightly better pacing and characters.
