"Definitive" Batman artist?

It definetly has to be Neal Adams his Batsuit is the best in the comic books.

I say Neal Adams too. I still remember my old 70's comics and his illustrations were just amazing.

Difficult for me to separate "definitive" from "favourite." My favourite is probably Mazzuchelli. Definitive, though? Can't call Mazzuchelli definitive, as his body of work is just too small. I have to go with Adams.

I'm interested in seeing how popular Tony Daniel and Dustin Nguyen are ten years from now. Nguyen brings an incredible stylistic flair to Batman, and Daniel is like Neal Adams meets Jim Lee. As far as I'm concerned, they're the next generation of classic Batman artists.

I think this pretty much answers the question..

Neal Adams redefined Batman in the 70's. He brought it back from the stigma of the TV show. Those covers used to scare me as a kid...that's how good they are.
His Batman will always be the definitive to me.

did mazzucchelli ever draw joker or any of the batman villians....i always wondered how he would do them

I take it not many like him but for me its Tim Sale, I also love Jim Lee's portrayal of Batman...& Catwoman, especially Catwoman :)

These are some of the best Batman The Long Halloween panels, Tim Sale's artwork is pretty good.

I like some of Sale's stuff, but sometimes it's just not consistent enough for me...Just my opinion.

I think Sale is terrific too.
I do think Jim Lee is a remarkable artist, but the clean lines of his artwork just doesn't have the gothic feel as much as an Adams or Sale for some reason.

I think Jim said something in the Hush reprints that he had trouble going for that darkness that his predacessors have done.

Before 1964 it's Dick Sprang. Easily.

For the more modern version, I'd go with Neal Adams, although Jim Aparo was the better storyteller and had the much bigger body of work and Marshall Rogers had Adams beat as far as atmosphere and making Gotham City part of the action.

looking at the facts, and disregarding the useless opinion...the answer is neal adams.

It's Tim Sale for me too. Dark Victory should come in mail anytime soon. :woot:

Pretty much agree.

For me, it's ogt to be Tim Sale. My first Batman books were his and Loeb's and I have loved his style from Superman to Spiderman(can't wait to see Captain America this month!). I really hope that Dustin Ngyuen(spelling) is a Batman regular in a couple of years. I am loving his work on Detectice Comics. I would also LOVE to see Alex Maleev have a good run or mini-series.

for me

Bolland
Adams
Mazzucchelli
Ross
Sale
Lee

in no order

Bolland, Ross, Sale and Lee.

The great thing about Batman is that there is no definitive artistic portrayal, well IMO there isn't. What makes the character and his stories so brilliant is that they can be drawn a number of different ways to suit the era they are in. I personally like the grittier grimier stuff that doesn't look 100% perfect, like Sale's work.
