Playstation Demon's Souls, the exclusive you SHOULD be getting excited about

Looks so good. There have been some rumours about Sony buying Bluepoint, and if Demon’s Souls turns out to be as good as the footage we’ve seen so far that would be a no brainer purchase.

Nice. I was expecting top reviews for this one.

Created my character (she's a cutie!) and officially starting Demon's Souls! Wish me luck!

The visuals in this game are amazing!! :atp:

If an early launch title can look this good, can you imagine what the next Dragon Age or Mass Effect game will look like some years into this gen?! And what will late-gen games look like??!! :wow:

I'm eXcited for the neXt Assassin's Creed, Grand Theft Auto, Horizon, Naughty Dog game and whatever cinematic looking game there is in the next two to siX years.

I did it!! I defeated my first Demon's Souls boss (that slimy Phalanx thing)!! Technically, this also makes it my first ever Soulsborne boss that I've defeated!!

:chd::chd::chd:

Congrats! I'm now up to my second boss finished and I'm still loving this first go at a Souls game. I like the sense of adventure that you're not really sure where to go, so you just have to explore and see what works. After Phalanx I went to another boss that I didn't seem leveled enough to handle (my hits barely did any damage) so I had to turn back to another area. It feels old school but in a modern way, and the challenges feel well designed so they can be hard but leaving you with the feeling that it's certainly something you can overcome.

Unless things really take a severe turn for the worse later in the game I'm going to be a fan of this type of game. Maybe Bloodbourne will be a good thing to try later as it's free on PS+ for PS5 owners now.

Totally agree!

Not just the sense of unknown and uncertainty, but that there is a challenge to the game. You can and will die at any time. You have to carefully watch and manage your stats, equipment, etc.

You're not some all-powerful warrior with flashy DMC style moves that can just mow through an entire section of enemies. Your health and magic don't automatically restore after each battle, like they do in some modern RPGs.

As you said, it feels old school, and I like that. I'm also more motivated to check out the other Souls game like Dark Souls and Bloodborne after this.

I was just invaded by another player and died after a really long and close fight. The funny thing about it was that I learned that the red ghosts are players since I had actually encountered that yesterday as well, but I must have missed the invasion text. I actually had two invaders at the same time (apparently new for PS5 version) and I beat both of them thinking they were just normal but tough enemies that looked a bit out of place for the rest of the area. :)

I laughed at myself in today's fight since twice I had the opponent on the ropes and rolling away for a heal, and twice I lunged to interrupt only to be inches away from him.

I have yet to be invaded. But oh goodie!! another challenge to look forward to.

My updated Souls ranking, with only the most updated version of each game:

6. Dark Souls 2: Mediocre, blah, can barely remember much of of it outside of the DLC.

5. Demon's Souls: It's a bit on the short end, and depending on how you play it, it can be very short, but has everything you will come to expect. The quality of life choices make it such a better experience then the original version. Biggest mark against it, is the bosses just don't match up to what is to come later. But it's a great game and with this Remake, a very good starting point.

4. Dark Souls: A truly amazing game through Londor. After that, it falls off a cliff, and you can tell they cut production short. Some of the areas are just maddening to get through because ofi t. Still, even more so the Demon's Souls, responsible for this style of game.

3. Dark Souls 3: The most fully realized game of the original series. The ashen world tells you a story of the end of Souls, that invokes the first two games beautifully. The boss line up is legit, as is the DLC.

2. Sekiro: Truly, the most challenging game they have ever made. You can't fudge this one by over leveling. The best combat in a game maybe ever, with strong characters, a beautiful world, the best boss line up ever, and a challenge around every corner. This is the "purest" game they have made, and once you defeat the GOAT final boss, you will feel like you have done something truly special.

1. Bloodborne: The best game ever made? Maybe. Eldritch horror, with fast combat, incredible bosses, unique weapons, and the most on point fashion souls. The DLC is probably the best any of these games have ever been.

Interesting to see a ranking from someone that's played them all. As said I've only played Demon's Souls PS5 and I've also seen a playthrough of Dark Souls Remastered. It's a bit unfair to compare watching and playing but from what I've seen this far I prefer the style of things in Demon's Souls. It's not surprising that the first game wouldn't rank in the top though.

Something I really like this far is that my character has pretty realistic armor and weapons for a knight. I think that looks so much cooler than having oversized and weird weapons, and it probably goes especially when fighting demons and such since it further establishes the man vs monster dynamic.

I think the new coat of paint on Demon's Souls helps it standout beautifully. The original honestly looks awful, which kept me off playing it when it first came out. But it is very similar to Dark Souls from a gameplay aspect. Just a bit more basic when it comes to bosses, which to be fair should be expected. It was the first game.

When it comes to these games the most important overall thing for me is the bosses and weapon selection. But like so many others, I take Fashion Souls to heart, and looking so amazing in this game is a big thing for me. I was tempted to place Demon's Souls over Dark Souls now, but the interconnected level design and bosses in the first 2/3s of Dark Souls plus the DLC are all just so good. Also I just slightly prefer the lore, though it is rather similar to Demon's Souls.

My first Souls game was actually Bloodborne, and then I worked my way through everything else before Dark Souls 3's release. Outside of Dark Souls 2, I recommend them all, especially Dark Souls 3 and Bloodborne. Bloodborne's gameplay is a lot more based around speed and movement, so if you play that one take into account that there isn't a legit shield in the game or armor to weigh you down. It's the same for Sekiro, which has some aspects that make it fundamentally different then the other games, and definitely the least Souls of the bunch.

I really hope we get some proper DLC for Demon's Souls. I'd love the 6th cut archstone, but at the same time, I wouldn't say no to Bluepoint making Demon's Souls 2. :D

I died at the first boss and kept dying after that. Hell I even died in the Nexus so I just ain't good enough for this. But it'll look good as the first game in the Ps5 collection.

When Demon's Souls Remake was first announced at the PS5 reveal event, my reaction was basically "Meh. It's the souls game that started it all. But I have no interest. I think I'll pass."

When the next trailer played during the PS5 pricing event, my reaction was "Damn that looks good! I don't really like this type of game, but I might get it because it is the first game that looks most next-gen to me."

Now, after playing Demon's Souls for 3 weeks, and spending most of my PS5 time playing only Demon's Souls, my reaction is "Getting the PS5 was worth it for just this one game!"

Nice! Do you think you’d now go back to the other Souls games and enjoy them more?

I can relate on all accounts. I'm on my second play through with a new character and still enjoying myself a ton. Still going melee but I've moved from spear and shield to massive sword. I'm going to try to get some more of the trophies this time around (now that I've actually looked at them to see what they want me to do) and also engage in the multiplayer aspect a little.

There's a good chance that I'll try out Bloodborne when I'm done with this (especially since it's free) and who knows how far back I'll eventually go? Depends on if it keeps being as entertaining, and how much the experience diminishes by going back in hardware generations.

Yes. Most likely. In fact over the holidays, I picked up Dark Souls 1-3 and Bloodborne for the PS4.

Just from the pure visuals standpoint, it will certainly be hard to go back to the older titles. But if the core gameplay and mechanics are similar, then I think I will be more likely to give those titles another chance and enjoy them more this time around.

Though, now I'm really wishing for a Remake of Dark Souls 1-3 and Bloodborne with the same visuals of Demon's Souls Remake for next-gen consoles. :drl:

I guess I'll have to wait and see what Elden Rings looks like, as that might satisfy my itch for the next "next-gen" souls game.

But I am definitely more receptive to this type of game now.

I've actually restarted as a melee Knight character. It's definitely more challenging early on compared to the spell-slinging Royal that I tried initially. But I'm finding the melee combat extremely satisfying!

Maybe the visuals of Demons Souls will attract more players into the gameplay style (sugarcoating it lol) making them more tolerant of it and eventually appreciative. Could be good for the series as a whole and show everyone else what the fans have been raving about.

I agree! It certainly worked for me. I'd say the main reason why I even bothered to give this game a chance is because the visuals looked so darn good and looked the most next-gen so far. If the visuals didn't look as good, I might very well have dismissed it as the remake of that first souls game which I never had interest in.

I know it may come across as shallow and superficial, but I am very visually oriented when it comes to first impressions. For example, if I see a comic book issue and I really can't stand the art style, I will be less likely to read it, despite what the story inside is. Conversely, if I see an art style or cover that visually appeals to me right away (like the work of the late Michael Turner), then that will grab my attention.

And the same goes with games. Especially RPGs, like Demon's Souls, which feature character creation. My initial impression of a game's character creator will go a long way to informing my interest in the game.
