Detective Pikachu

Not to just look to the past, but some things just don't and shouldn't translate well to live-action, no matter how much imagination you put into it. Pokemon is one of those things in my opinion. But hey, Alex Hirsch is involved and Gravity Falls was well received when it was on...so there's that, I guess?

This is something I'd want to see purely for the reaction of the audience around me, like that video on YouTube right now of people in a theater reacting to Pikachu talking.

Why don't they just make a normal Pokemon movie? Why Detective Pikachu? I don't get it?

It's Hollywood man. what do you expects from perverts and molesters? Good ideas? I dont think so.

The Pokemon Company felt it was too risky to do a regular Pokemon movie...

That was what Max Landis said a while back in this thread.

As others have undoubtedly already said, they likely wanted to cash in on the popularity of the franchise but felt having a movie that is essentially about competitive animal fighting wouldn't go over well.

Idiots have been complaining that the series is essentially dog fighting since its inception, but that has the potential to become 100 times more apparent when you have this violence happening in live action.

If that's the case, than the entire franchise should just get cancelled right now.

Well, no, because like I said people are clearly fine with it happening in a game or silly cartoon.

They're just "unable to battle" in the cartoon. If these are kinda photorealisitc looking creatures it can come off a little unsettling I will admit, lol.

A cartoon which has been on for over 20 years and also spawned multiple theatrical films. You say those are silly, but what makes the idea of this movie less silly?

Then don't make a live-action movie.

Say hello to PikaPool!

Ryan Reynolds to Star in Pokemon Movie 'Detective Pikachu' (Exclusive)

The actor will join Justice Smith, who will be seen in the upcoming 'Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,' and 'Big Little Lies' actress Kathryn Newton.

Ryan Reynolds is going to catch them all.

The Deadpool star has signed on to star in Legendary’s live-action movie adaptation of Pokemon, THR has learned.

Reynolds now joins Justice Smith, who will be seen in the upcoming Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and Big Little Lies actress Kathryn Newton in the movie, titled Detective Pikachu, that is based on the gaming franchise.

Rob Letterman (Goosebumps) is directing the project, which is due to start shooting mid-January in London.

The concept of Pokemon, which was initially a card-collecting game as well as anime, sees players acting as trainers who collect cute but powerful monsters called Pokemon in order to compete in battle tournaments.

Pikachu is a species of Pokemon, while Detective Pikachu the character is a peculiar sort from the Pikachu set, a self-styled investigator who is good at finding things. Reynolds will play the titular Detective Pikachu.

The story is kicked into gear when Smith's character's father is kidnapped, forcing the teen to team up with Pikachu in order to find him. Newton is a sassy journalist who helps them on their quest.

The role is said to be motion capture in nature, sources say.

Many details of the project are being kept off the grid, including the casting, which has been underway under the radar by the usually secretive Legendary.

The company has high hopes for the feature project, as the Pokemon franchise has sold 300 million video games worldwide, shipped 23.6 billion TCG cards to 74 countries, and has produced an animated series spanning 20 seasons.

Alex Hirsch and Nicole Perlman wrote the latest draft of the script. Universal Pictures is handling distribution of the live-action film outside Japan; Toho will handle distribution in Japan.

Reynolds' Deadpool sequel is set to open June 1. He is repped by WME and Sloane Offer.

Given that Ryan Reynolds is voicing Pikachu, maybe it won't be an outright abomination?

You say those are silly, but what makes the idea of this movie less silly?

Because the violence in the cartoon would likely not look anything like the violence in a live-action film. Unless the movie would be heavily stylized like something like Speed Racer, I guess.

AND that it's being written by both the co-writer of "Guardians of the Galaxy" AND the creator of "Gravity Falls"? Take my money. RIGHT NOW.

This gives me hope it'll end up like the Lego Movie where it's actually amusing despite being an obvious cash grab.

Easy voice-over money. That's why.

No, I mean, like... the whole thing.

Those are the only reasons I'm even remotely interested in this. Gravity Falls was the s***.

First I was like "No" and then I thought "Wait is Reynolds going to play Pikachu?!"

Reynolds what are your doing? Man you're finally getting out the slums with Deadpool and now your doing stuff like this

Next time, Danny.

On an unrelated note, if Pikachu doesn't make it into the X-Force film as a result of this, then there's a serious problem that we need to discuss.

This is going to be an abomination and i can't wait to see it

This is going to be hilarity.
