Detective Pikachu

I thought this movie started off well enough but it became dreadfully dull for long stretches of the second and third acts. Had problems with tone for me. Ryan Reynolds cracking random jokes non stop to the point that they just became white noise made up most of the humor, but the jokes rarely landed. The only acting I really enjoyed Kathryn Newton, who was plucky, having fun and seemed to be the only one who fit the best tone of the film. The other human characters were taking everything far too seriously. I thought this needed a Taika Waititi touch. Should have been much lighter.

5/10

This movie was charming as a whole, but has barely any plot and is fairly poorly written and you could guess the major twists in the first 10 minutes of the movie . But Ryan Reynolds makes the movie entertaining.

I saw it last night. Thought it was a fun first pokemon movie. It had a lot of issues but it laid the groundwork to do more/better films next. Hoping they do a Pokémon Red movie that’s a little more serious and better written film than this was.

I think that’s is what honestly needed to happen, and I hope it makes the money to back it up. This movie established the already well made Pokémon world in live action, and it wasn’t a bad film, just really light on plot (oddly as the game itself was one of the plot-heaviest games), and a little slow in places. Craft a new story, being back the team that did the visuals, and I think it could truly be a great film.

Reynolds pretty much had to be Deadpool lite in this one which does work for some who aren't fans of the franchise. The Mr. Mime interrogation scene is a highlight mostly because of how hilariously dark it gets.

Pikachu's reaction to how dark it gets is so perfect.

.....Can that even work with Pokemon?
In my mind, the "perfect" Pokemon movie would feel like Star Wars or Ragnarok. It shouldn't be super serious, but respectful, fun, funny, and heartfelt, with those big punching the air with hype moments. I actually feel like that is the tone they were going for here. It just isn't a great movie.

This was kind of testing the waters because a full on adaptation of the anime or Red and Blue would not work without kind of priming people for this universe. Also the movie is PG but it's a hard PG if you know what I mean.

I think they could have done that adaptation out the gate. The issue is they'd have to make a great film. And that just ain't easy.

I assume Red and Blue has to be a multi-picture film series, using Team Rocket for the villains. If scaled up, you could have the beginning of the journey, first Gym battle, and maybe Mt. Moon for the rocket introduction, and hint at bigger things. That way the second film could have the Silph stuff, and then the third film has the final badges and confrontation with Giovanni and then the Elite 4.
