Detective Pikachu

Honestly I would've enjoyed some Ash vs Team Rocket shenanigans a lot more. I am obviously not a huge Pokemon fan but I bonded with my kids over those cartoons always found them enjoyable. I was hoping for that type of flavor.

63% on RT... Still the most critically well-received video game adaptation.

This was kind of testing the waters because a full on adaptation of the anime or Red and Blue would not work without kind of priming people for this universe. Also the movie is PG but it's a hard PG if you know what I mean.

Ah... So, sex, sure, but no butt stuff? Got it.

I was a little surprised it was PG prior to seeing this. I agree that it did feel like it was almost between a PG and a PG13 rating.

If it wasn't Pokemon it very well could have been a PG-13 flick.

I remember saying back in the day that Bill Nighy would have been a perfect voice for Mewtwo

wasn't completely wrong was I?

On a more positive note; the Angry Video Game Nerd really enjoyed it.

When it comes to movies like this, his opinion carries a lot more weight for me than any of RT "top critics".

Personally I really enjoyed it, the story and human character's aren't particularly noteworthy but they do their job better than I think a lot of people are giving them credit for, the main attraction is the Pokemon and of course Pikachu himself and I loved how they were handled.

Welp it made 20.7 million dollars on Friday so it looks like it’s a critical hit.

I’ll probably check it out Monday. Like someone said, hope it opens the door for a Pokémon Red movie.

It’s about time Red got his due, I’m sick of Ash.

I didn't think it was bad, but I was bored by a good deal of it. I was big into Pokemon from the ages of 10-12 but aside from playing Pokemon GO the summer it came out a few years ago, it's not one of those interests like Star Wars or superheroes that followed me into adulthood. The nostalgia for Pokemon just isn't there for me like it is with something like Star Wars. The novelty of seeing them in a live action setting is fun, but that can be easily achieved by watching the trailers. I don't think there was any Pokemon in the film that wasn't already shown in the trailers.

I liked this movie as a whole. I was in elementary school when Pokemon became huge in the states. COllected the cards, played the games, watch the show.
I have always been very skeptical of a live action Pokemon film. I was even more skeptical that they were doing Detective Pikachu. But this was pretty good.

Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu was really good. I thought Justice Smith and Kathryn Newton were pretty good in their roles. I think they could've been replaced by most young actors, but they were still good. I think they're romance worked well. And by well I mean they didn't overstate it beyond an attraction. I was surprised by Justice Smith because I watched the first season of that show The Get Down and he was trash in it.

Seeing the world of Pokemon was cool too. 2/3 of the major action set pieces were pretty good.

I agree with others that the script wasn't all the way there. I get that this is a light movie, but in a detective mystery you want the audience to discover things as the characters do. But the opening of this movie "spoils" a major event. So when the characters become privy to the even later in the movie it kinda just feels pointless. It makes the plot predictable. And this plot was already really predictable just by the way they set up some of the characters.

And I could've let some of it slide if it was a kids movie, but as some of you guys have pointed out, it doesn't know whether its PG or PG13. They should've just fully leaned into PG and made it more of a kids movie.

And the villains plan was really stupid. Really REALLY stupid.

So yeah the script kinda kneecapped this movie. I still like it, but I'm in no rush to catch it again even on streaming.
