Detective Pikachu

It seems to be a bit of a victim of its own hype a bit. I mean people are saying it didn’t take risks but basing a movie around a cgi character based on a cartoon is obviously a huge risk. I guess by the time the movie came out it was no longer seen as risky

Well, I saw it last night. Kids loved it, I liked it. my 7 year old looked at me, and said, "that movie was cool, but Endgame was way better". Pretty much the consensus view, I suppose. It was fine. I can imagine that, if you know NOTHING about Pokemon, it was total gibberish, though. I give it a decent 7/10.

I think that's what most people who enjoyed it say. A fine, enjoyable movie. 7/10

I have a spoiler question since I haven’t seen the movie and probably won’t til home video release

So after Pikachu and Harry get separated, does Pikachu still talk like Ryan Reynolds? Does he still talk at all? I wonder if they do a sequel if they would try to get Reynolds back to do the voice but then how would they explain it

Angry Video Game Nerd said he's not into this franchise, but he liked the movie, so it is possibly better than that.

Doesn't matter much. One review I listened to said the split lasts maybe 5 minutes and ends as if nothing happened.

Well, good! I was just watching it and trying to think about, "If I knew nothing, would I enjoy it". Hard to forget 20 years of Pokemon knowledge. Also, Psyduck is an all-star. An ALL-STAR, I TELL YOU!

That’s not accurate. They’re split for good about five minutes before the end, but the movie ends with Tim and his father reconnecting and Pikachu being a normal Pikachu again (ie, not talking). It’s about the first time in a long time there has been a definite end to a big movie. It literally feels so complete it will be very hard for them to unpick it.

Rumour has it there is no intention to give this movie a sequel, and that the movie currently being written by the 22 Jump Street crew is the long anticipated Pokémon Red/Blue. I hope that’s the case.

There is no logical way to give this movie a sequel to recapture the dynamic in this film. Doesn’t work if Tim knows Pikachu is his dad. Unless they can come up with something else inventive (and 22 Jump St writer might just do that, they need to leave it alone and look elsewhere.

I think if the movie sets up anything is a movie set 20 years earlier when Mewtwo is created.

Welcome to the world of Pokémon.....wait this has been around for over two decades.....

PRAISE: The story of Tim Goodman (Justice Smith) an insurance appraiser trying to find out exactly what happened to his father and teaming up with
Detective Pikachu (voice of Ryan Reynolds), his father’s Pokemon starts off well enough. What really pulled me in was the movies world building.
The SFX and CGI in the film from Ryme city in which humans and Pokémon coexist peacefully to the Pokémon that reside in the woods was nearly flawless.
There's a world bending Inception like scene that was incredible !!
Smith does a fine job,Kathryn Newton as Lucy a wannabe reporter but enthusiastic intern was capable.
Ryan Reynolds has some very funny moments and was basically a PG even PG-13 version of Deadpool.
The film even pulls off a couple of moving moments.

PROBLEMS:The story was ULTRA predictable !!
At times the delivery of dialogue is really bad and stalled,as if the actors were at a table read of the script for the first time.
Some basic story paths popped up here and there. Some were similar to what ive already seen in movies like Ready Player One and
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

Some films are not for me,anyone that was ever a huge fan will probably love, like the kids in my screening that would yell out the different names of the Pokémon when they spotted them in the movie.Even as a casual fan i enjoyed myself.

Scale of 1-10 a 7½

After Harry and Pikachu get separated by Mewtwo Harry's Pikachu goes back to being a normal Pikachu, and Harry is played by Reynolds, I imagine a sequel would be about Tim and his dad with Pikachu being a more traditional Pokemon partner that takes a more active role during the action scenes.

Makes sense to have his son understand him while everyone else hears Pika pika

I think the endgame effect really hurt it to be honest. It didn’t make as much money as people thought it would, although it made a ton. I mean, a lot of families only go to one movie a year because it’s so expensive and it sounds like most chose endgame. But endgame had years and years to establish itself whereas this is a new franchise basically for the movies.

Oh well

What happened on wikipedia? Yesterday it said this movie earned $170 million, and the figure dropped down today to $166 million.

Given the Pokemon Go craze few years ago, that Pokemon still does well in Nintendo consoles and its the first live action Pokemon film. I thought it would have opened bigger especially in foreign markets. Maybe it would have legs just like most successful animated 3d films. But I'm not sure. I think it would be lucky to hit $700 million worldwide at this rate. Its definitely not getting a 4x multiplier in North America to hit over $200 million. Its biggest hope is Japan which I think had a 10 million opening day.

I wish it really focused on the Pokemon world, like it was in the anime and for most of the video games. Not this father and son story set in the Pokemon world.

I thought it would have done better.

I'm watching it tonight expecting it to be an appetizer to the inevitable Red & Blue or Anime adaptation. Can anyone tell me if there is a post-credit scene?

Regarding the sequel talk:
Maybe they might need to go under cover and it’d be easier to have Harry as a Pokémon, so they track down Mewtwo and ask him to re-merge them temporarily. Harry can give info to Tim, and also speak to Pokémon.

Finally got to watch this today, and I enjoyed it as well. The script, the story and the writing are pretty weak, but seeing the Pokemon finally brought to life on the big-screen was definitely enough to keep me engaged for the most part. I can completely see non fans not caring much for it though which is something I hope they are able to fix in a sequel. I really liked the interactions between Reynolds and Smith in this, and I was honestly surprised by how genuinely emotional some of the more dramatic scenes were.

7/10

I think they should adapt Pokemon Mystery Dungeon instead of do a sequel, would expand the concept of talking Pokemon but also offer a new sort of adventure
