Did "Homecoming" change the opinion of any non-Welling fans?

Have you changed your mind regarding Tom as Supes in a movie?

  • No. I still don't want him in a Superman movie.

  • I was against it...But, after "Homecoming" I wouldn't care either way.

  • I was against it. But, after "Homecoming" I am for Tom being cast as Supes.

  • I was always for Tom being in the movie.

I would have posted this is the Superman movie thread. Since that where most non-Weling fans are. But, its not allowed. I am just curious after "Homecoming" or some of the other recent episodes have any non-Welling fans either changed their mind from being completely against Tom as Supes in a theatrical movie to I wouldn't care or am for it.

I am posting this. Since I have read positive reviews about his performance for normally non-Welling fans.

I've read from a few peoples comments that were iffy about Welling say that he proved that he could pull it off in the 200th episode.

He didn't actually play Superman or do anything out of the box from the norm, so I don't see why it would.

The strength of the episode was in Brian/Kelly's script.

Karelia, thats what I am curious about. I know 95% of the people in the Smallville forum want him as Supes. It those forum members in the other forum that I am more curious about.

True. But, he did portray Clark Kent as the Clark Kent seen in the movies. And other Supermanly traits (ie-Helicopter). But, I thought his acting ability is so much better than in years past.

ZIPBAGS, those comments I read weren't actually here. It was on another Comic Book site. :D

I think he has gotten a lot better over the years as well. All that episode did was prove that he can pull it off. If somebody writes a good script, he'll do just fine. :D

He's played stern and serious before, like that future CK came off as.

And he's done rescue sequences before.

The episode wasn't really as much about Welling as Superman, as it was for celebrating Smallville in general.

Objectively, I didn't think his acting here was much different from the norm. He's more or less maintained this level for a while. But I can understand your fanboyish giddiness over seeing the future version of Clark onscreen.

It just has zero relevance to the Superman film.

I was always for it, but at this point not without Erica. She has really won me over.

If you go 10 years playing a role and NOT improve at least a little, than Hollywood is more messed up than I ever thought. :) Tom Welling has grown into this role, he's comfortable with it, he very much is it. I think it's a great paralel of how Tom Wellin who had virtually no experience when getting the part, and his character have both grown and developed so much over the years.

That being said, I believe TW is adept at playing the Smallville version of Superman, not a movie version for the general audience. The clip of him as future Clark was so short, I wish we could've seen more of it. But as it was, no, I don't see him as a more versatile actor than before.

Yeah, exactly.

it actually made me want him for a film version even less.

i'm not saying he was terrible, but future clark just didn't wow me at all

his acting was as bad as routh's. sure he looked cool as future clark, but come on. welling is good for the show, he's just not movie material.

I think a lot of it can come down to the script and director...Who would have thought the guy from "Bosom Buddies" and "Bachelor Party (Tom Hanks) would go on to win 3 Oscars for best actor and be considered one of Hollywoods leading dramatic actors.

No the episode didn't... why would it? he just doesn't have the Cut for him... You know the abdul muammar CUT that is needed for Shuperman

well we all will always have different views on who we like/dislike/want in the role of superman/clark kent. Sure i mostly grew up with cain and welling's take on the character. I enjoyed them both too. Same with reeve enjoyed his work as the character and its classic and all. But yea everyone will always have different views on what worked/didnt work and all the little details on who is or will be playing the role for yrs to come.

Homecoming was a thousand times better than SR, thats for sure.

@Serene

How are we haters? The thread asks a question and most people answered giving arguments for their opinion.

I didn't address that to you specifically, but it does apply to some people.

My point is that there are a lot of people who are always going to hate the idea of Tom being Superman in a movie no matter what. A single great episode of Smallville isn't going to change their minds.

He could give an Emmy-caliber performance on the show and to some people, it wouldn't matter because it's still SMALLVILLE - a show they look down their noses at.

Tom's ability to play Superman in a 2 hour Big film, with a Big budget and MONTHS to shoot and re-shoot just can't be compared to SV where the entire 1 hour show is filmed in 6 days.

People can hate SV - which I actually can totally respect, even if I don't agree - but to hold the scripts and story direction of the show against Tom Welling's ability to perform as Superman in a movie is ridiculous and short-sighted. The movie needs someone with a great look, who can bring both the action and the romance and the heroic nature of this character.

Tom's been doing all that and more for 12-14 hours a day, 6 days a week, 9 months a year - for 10 YEARS.

So, not liking Smallville is one thing, saying Tom can't do it is another.

Not liking his "look" is a valid argument - but that boggles my mind too.

well said! tom deserves a chance on the big screen. :woot:

sometimes i think people think it is cool to bash tom & smallville just for the heck of it. it's growing tiresome anymore. im sick of recasts and reboots, just make the darn new movie based after smallville with erica, tom & micheal. i bet it will bank at the box office. id call 10 years on tv well "established" characters.
