In the movie, weren't his final words to Bruce something like "There is nothing to be afraid of."? If so, did Bruce take them to heart, and have no fear of death in the movie?
It's been a while since I saw the movie, and beleive it or not, this came to me just out of the blue.
BTW, I thought it was very heroic in a dad sort of way to try to ease his son's distress as he lay dying. I thought it was cool.

I don't know, maybe he is not afraid to die. But that's a completely different feeling than "not being afraid to die so I can do whatever the hell I please" if you know what I mean.
Maybe he's at ease with the idea that he will some day passover.

On a side note:
Why didn't Roach grow a mustache!!

I think that line had more to do with the overall theme of fear in the movie...I don't think it was that specific. Especially in regards to death. Bruce was afraid of a lot of things in the movie.

The childhood fear of Bats, a fear of accepting the mantle of his family, a fear of letting his parents down, etc. So there was a lot of things, and I think that's what the line was supposed to be about. Fear in general. Much more so than death - which was one fear that was never really mentioned at any time.

But why didn't he have a mustache!!

This is how i saw it as well, good post:up: I think it was also to calm Bruce down at that moment in time as well.

Bruces fear was Bats. I dont think he was ever really afraid of death. To be honest to do the kind of work batman does and V in V for vendetta you almost have to want death a little in order for you to kind of be qualified or get that missing piece that enables you to do great things like these gentlemen do.

"The time has come for me to meet my maker and to repay him in kind for all that he has done." -- V

"All I want all that I deserve is at the end of this tunnel." (death) -- V

suprisingly the character that feared death was Ra's al ghul though he did conquer his fear of death as did bruce his fear of bats. I believe it always stays w/ you but you could now control it.

"Death does not wait for you to be ready. Death does not consider it lawfull. And make no mistake. here you will face death." -- Ra's al Ghul

I believe the line was "its ok....dont be afraid".
His father also said "Its ok" when saving him from the cave.
Later Gordon regurgitated "Its ok" several times to young Bruce which I thought was poignant and one of the reasons Bruce remembered Gordon after so many years.

As for everything else I feel the same as CConn.
Fear, in general, was the main theme and if ya didnt catch on to that I would suggest watching the movie again. This time without distractions.

I think he was just trying to make it easier on his son. He was dying, his son must have been scared to death....watching his parents die infront of him like that. So, it was probably better he try and make his son calm down...than screaming in agony as he died.

But, it bigger than that still. The theme of the movie is fear. All of the things CConn mentioned fall into that. So, it's sort of a smaller picture- yet bigger picture deal.

Btw.......in the original Batman origin, Thomas didn't have a mustache....so, if your wondering why no 'stache......that could be the why.

I don't think it was Thomas Wayne's words, but rather the memory of the scene of his death that turned Bruce a little suicidal.

Well, he was whatever makes you unafraid of going to jail. Jailicidal?

You'd have to be at least a little, to be jumping into danger night after night, voluntarily. He has a lot of angst, and just doesn't care much about his life.

Love the quote in your signature, Cats. ;)

Batman isn't afraid to die, but at the same time, he isn't going to stop trying to survive when necessary. I think that is the effect life has had on him.

Well, we could just say he's crazy. We could say he's fearless. We could say he's just not afraid of heights.

But, suicidal....I dunno. I think him wanting to kill Chill kinda shows he wasn't.

But, yeah.....he's obviously missing a certain "fear" gene that would stop him from jumping off rooftops.

But, really...I think we can see that as courage. I mean, every hero needs to kinda NOT CARE about his own well being in a certain way. I mean, if they were afraid of being hit, or going splat.....they'd never get any work done.
