Director of "Moon" says enough with the 20 something leading actors

I get what he's saying to an extent. I agree on the surface but then when I actually think about it, examples are few.

but characters like Robin Hood should be played by badass rough actors. like Crowe. he looks like a real man. Bale looks like a real man. Rockwell looks like a real man.
I don't see why Robin Hood needs a badass rough actor, and even if he does, they failed with casting Crowe; not only the fact that he was on the older side, but because he's gotten blubbery and was too lazy to get back into a good physique.

What the heck is a "real man"?

Not only this, but the fact that the new Robin Hood was an origin story, and Crowe is, and looks, like a 40+ old actor.

I actually was gonna add that and totally forgot.

I mean, Miller was originally cast as Maid Marion, and I thought that was a good age range for her and Robin; early to mid 30's.
And exactly, Crowe is and looke like an out of shape 40+ old actor, and it clearly didn't work.

I think they're the ones he thinks about at night. In the dark. With tissues at his bedside. You know, in case he sneezes.
lolz thats probably it

and yeah Robin Hood should have been older but not 40+ and out of shape

That was a miscast on Scott's part. But since he and his bro have massive hard-ons for Denzel and Russell, what are ya gonna do?

i agree matrix-ghost.

Jones was obvious talking about young actors playing old mature character.

of course Sam Witvicky should be played by someone like Shia. of course Spiderman should be played by a young actor.

Just like I said, Black and White. Russell Crowe SUCKED as Robin Hood. And part of that was because he was too damn old to play the part. Was this Robin Hood : The Retirement Years?

Let's cast James Gandolfini for Scott Pilgrim and Denzel Washington for Kick-Ass next! Or how about they fire Andrew Garfield and replace him with Tom Cruise instead! Daniel Day Lewis for Tin Tin!

It's called MISS-CAST and I don't give a rats how old the actor is, if that's how they're portrayed in the script/story and they can act - because the truth is there are great actors of all ages out there, sorry to burst your bubble - then they have every right to be getting leading roles as the next guy.

Your definition of a "real man" is quite confusing. A bloated gut and wrinkles don't make someone a "real man". At all. :whatever:

You know what I don't get?

The fact that most people can't make solid statements and stand behind them anymore. Today it seems like everyone is so concerned with being PC and not making anyone angry that they'll never make a 100% claim one way or the other.

Jones does...but he's getting taken over the coals for it?

...

Grow a spine and state what you believe. If it's what you think, it's what you think. If it makes you unpopular...so be it, you're being true to your feelings on the matter.

I agree, which is why I feel comfortable expressing my disagreement with this statement:

Harrison Ford was 39 years old when he played Indiana Jones for the first time. 39! Leading men need to look like they have LIVED.

Fed up of leading men in their early 20s. Its ridiculous. they look like kids "acting" grown up. Rant over.

Who is he talking about? He's not talking about Chris Pine and Jake Gyllenhall. (30). He's talking about Twilight kids, basically. He saying that people who look young should act young.

This is the polar opposite of my particular beef with hollywood, and perhaps a result of it, that teenagers should be played by teenagers, and not by people in their mid-to-late 20s. It creates this idea that an 23 year old man looks like a teenager, and that's more than a bit ridiculous.

It is true that there is not an appreciation of older male stories, alas.

Out of shape? Crowe looked as muscular as ever when he took off his shirt in Robin Hood....

edit: i forgo to quote the people saying crowe is out of shape and "blubbery"

Haven't men in their 20's to even 30's played high school kids since the 70's maybe even further back?

why are you talking abut those young characters from movies?

this topic is not about spiderman, hot girl,........

Because it's all relative. You still haven't made a point.

see my main problem is just the opposite, I understand the limitations of a pool of talented young actors and child working laws blah blah blah, but I really hate it when 25 year olds play high schoolers. Drives me insane.

In that sense, they want someone that has the acting experience yet still looks young enough to at least be considered a teenager that just "looks" old.

I don't have a problem with 20 something leading actors I'm just tired of young bad actors.

Can anyone name half a dozen bankable leading ladies now in their 30s and 40s?

I think middle aged women have it way harder then middle aged men in Hollywood.

Anne Hathaway
Keira Knightley (maybe)
Katherine Heigl
Scarlett Johannson

...THere are probably more but I cant think of them

Anne Hathaway
Keira Knightley (maybe)
Katherine Heigl
Scarlett Johannson

None of these women have headlined a successful movie on their own. They're mostly paired with other actors.

I think Katherine Heigl is the next Jennifer Aniston.

No-one really headlines a successful movie by themselves. RDJ for example had Gwyneth in Iron Man and Rachel McAdams and Jude Law in Sherlock by that doesn't make him any less of a bankable star.

Sure, there's ...
Meryl Streep
Queen Latifah
Uma Thurman
Cate Blanchett
Penelope Cruz
Helena Bonham Carter
Renee Zelwegger
Nicole Kidman (arguable because her last couple of films bombed but I'll add her anyway)

Really? What about Will Smith “I Am Legend” or Tom Hanks “Cast Away”

Current Bankable Leading Actresses

Meryl Streep (YES) She’s a proven bankable star for the past few years.

Queen Latifah (NO) She was never a box-office draw.

Uma Thurman (NO) Without Quentin Tarantino she’s nothing.

Cate Blanchett (NO) She had Crowe, Pitt and Dicaprio to thank for her recent success.

Helena Bonham Carter (NO) Usually play supporting roles.

Penelope Cruz (NO) She was never considered bankable.

Renee Zelwegger (NO) She fell off the map a long time ago.

Nicole Kidman (NO) She’s currently box-office poison and one of the most overpaid actresses in Hollywood.

Lol
You took the words right out my mouth. With the exception of Streep , no one on that list is bankable. Then again Bonham Carter and Blanchett aren't exactly commercial actresses . They're usually the lead in indie flicks.

The fact that studios think Jolie is the most bankable female actress right now , speaks volumes .
