🇺🇸 Discussion: Guns, The Second Amendment, NRA - Part II

US News
Horrific acts that happened over the weekend in the Texas and Ohio

Lots of thoughts and prayers that something will change. I'll think and pray real hard the politicians get off their ass and do something.

I will say, I think they moved so quickly to the videogame argument is because the El Paso shooter will be linked with Trump. There is no way to avoid it. It's why Trump was deleting tweets. Yet, still using the same language in new tweets as the manifesto. And without the NRA/Ackerman-McQueen to guide the GOP, they have to go back to old boogeymans.

The thing that bothers me about using video games and mental health as a scapegoat is how demonstrably false it is. As if America is the only country in the world that has access to video games. As if Americans are the only people on Earth susceptible to mental illness. It’s not the comprehensive gun control legislation that other countries have, nope, it’s video games and mental illness that sets us apart.

There's two sides to this issue, and we should be mindful of everyone's opinions, no doubt. But at the same time, we need to come to terms with the fact that this really is a problem. Once we get there, we'll all accept that something must be done. But right now.... half this country feels like the real problem is the government trying to take away people's guns, instead of people using certain guns to kill people in mass.

Both things can be both true and significant problems. People shouldn't have assault weapons and people shouldn't be banned from having handguns but that middle ground certainly seems rare. When the sides are so far apart in their goals it is pretty difficult to not have mostly conflict between them.

America also isn't the only country with violent crime.

Gun control advocates have been asking for bans in assault and military style rifles; they're not asking to ban all the guns like handguns. It is the NRA and their supporters who refused to consider such proposal, even with massacres that occur on a weekly basis.

Ehh, as time has gone on, and the bodies piled up, a lot of people have hardened their view on gun control. 10 years ago, sure. But now, I don't think you can put most of the gun control advocates in that group. I don't think the generation raised on active shooter drills are as lenient.

This ****s starting to reach really ridiculous levels of stupidity with these random mass killings with legally obtained firearms. Could a mentally ill person or terrorist still commit a mass killing even with a gun ban? Of course, but at least make it way more difficult for them to obtain firearms legally.. not only that but ban all high round magazines & ban all assault style rifles, semi-automatic or not, they can still be fired quickly & there's literally no valid reason for your average civilian to own one.

America is so dumb & hard headed on this subject it would not surprise me in the slightest if a ban to violent video games came before a ban to firearms.. blame anything except the actual problem.

The reason they refuse such a proposal is that they consider any ground lost on gun ownership & control, to be lost forever.. which it is, but they probably fear if they openly & willingly accept such a proposal, that next week when someone guns down someone with a handgun or cuts someone in half with a shotgun, they'll want those gone also.

The upside is the NRA is literally going bankrupt financially. They already went bankrupt morally and ethically decades ago.

Fox News is now saying if we start banning assault rifles what is going to stop the left from expanding that ban. In other words, they taking our guns. :whatever:

Literally, this is the default Democratic Party position. People shouldn't have assault weapons and people shouldn't be banned from owning handguns. No one is coming for your handguns. This thing that you say is a true and significant problem isn't even being discussed seriously. You're fighting windmills.

Just ban them all, every other developed country gets on just fine without every other person owning a firearm so I think America will be just fine.

Way to ruin the point I was just making. Insisting that we ban all guns known to man is unhelpful. Not only is it technically impossible, but it feeds into all the fears that gun owners have, making it politically impossible to get the military grade weapons that civilians shouldn't own. I don't know of any legislator that is proposing we make owning a hand gun illegal, for good reason. Maybe in 100 years, we'll get to that place... but there's no reason to start there today.

Other than the gun crime being at a completely unacceptable level for a developed country.. no need for swift & hard changes.

Hey, if you want to fight the good fight and lose, be my guest. The way to win is to get rid of military grade Assault Rifles. That's the problem with mass shootings. That's the sphere that we'll be able to get bipartisan support.

Go after the hand guns, and not only will it confirm all the bad things that enemies say about liberals.. but you'll end up losing and not getting any gun legislation at all. On top of that... what exactly are you suggesting? That we go door to door and demand everyone gives up their hand guns? Good luck.

Changing an entire culture like that is impossible. It's easy to sit there and say it but how about you come up with a plan that will work to enact it? What is the solution to getting all these people who will literally die before giving up their guns? Do you suggest they actually be shot and killed? Do you imprison them? What do you do when there is a shootout with a bunch of heavily armed people who have been waiting decades for the government to come take their guns?

Simple as "take away the guns" sounds it is a joke to think it is realistic.

I'm fine with them starting with assault style rifles, but the goal should be for American firearm laws & regulations to fall in line with vast majority of other developed countries throughout the world.

Owning a firearm should be more of a privilege than a right which is the way it currently seems in the States.
