🇺🇸 Discussion: Guns, The Second Amendment, NRA - Part II

US News
The best way to reduce the number of guns in this country is for the Democrats to disarm themselves. Only Republicans should own guns.

You are going to have to explain this logic. Especially considering a high level of danger in this country is do to right wing extremist.

I'm assuming there's some sarcasm there but I can't quite catch it.

When the zombie apocalypse happens, I damn well want multiple assault rifles. In the meantime, I'm building a moat and strengthening the walls around my castle. I'm not putting alligators in the moat though. The last thing I need is a zombie alligator trying to eat me.

The scenario Lindsey is describing is extremely unlikely to happen. But, the same can be said for needing a gun for self-defense or a fire extinguisher for putting out a fire in my apartment.

I know Republican numbers are shrinking but they have not shrunk that much yet.

Yes. I get it. Here's the question. Statistically speaking, does having a gun in your home make you safer? The research suggests that the answer is "no". Even if the gun is properly stored, you double the risk of having a homicide and triple the risk of suicide. About 5M children live in households with unsecured weapons and this puts them at higher risk. I was one of those kids and looking back at some of the S*** that I did when my parents weren't around gives me goosebumps.

All of that being said, I'm not completely against having a gun in the household, IF people have undergone a thorough background check (including mental illness) and have ongoing safety training ANYTIME they are purchasing or obtaining a weapon. Now, THAT being said, I don't that a citizen has the constitutional right to own or carry a gun. We've probably all read the 2nd amendment and, when I read it, it is clearly referring to the right of the states to formed and oversee a militia. This has nothing to do with individual ownership of firearms. I think this is an important point because it allows the government to more effectively regulate what types of weapons citizens can carry. I don't think people should be able to have assault weapons or military grade weapons of war of any kind. I do recognize that this is a discussion that must be had if we are going to come up with federal, comprehensive gun control legislation.

A personal note. My mother has two guns. The first is a boxed 38 handgun (unloaded) that would be considered a collector's item and a 22 pistol (loaded) she keeps in the sideboard of her bed.....just in case. I go in there often to check on her as she is elderly and I often think "I hope she doesn't make a mistake and shoot me". :nrv: She has left them to me in her will and, after discussion with my wife, we have decided that when my mother passes, we will have them in our home when we both have had up to date training in the care and safety of firearms.

I remember my friends and I got my dad's unsecured handgun out one day and were messing around with it. Haunts me to this day how we could be so stupid, but that is nature of teenagers. That said, I have often thought about all of the things that would have to happen in order for a person to successfully defend their home with a firearm. It is really an exercise in the compound probability of independent events. First, there would need to be a person that intended to commit a crime, that person would most likely need to be in your general area, then that person would have to select your house as the target, you would have to be home, you would then need to be aware enough to get your gun in a timely fashion, and finally you'd have to have presence of mind to actually be able to use it as intended. Those are a lot of events that need happen just like that, which seems really unlikely to me.

I know EXACTLY how you feel. I was even younger (I think about 8 years old).

Owning guns do not make you safer. They only increase the likelihood of being shot. Just because Republicans choose to live dangerously doesn't mean that Democrats need to be like them. Democrats should disarm themselves.

So, according to the head of the NRA, the only thing that can stop a guy with a gun is a yacht? So, really, it should be the National Boating Association.

Depending on their mental health issues, yes. Some people have mental health issues which are perfectly fine owning a gun. Someone who has issues with control, or suicidal or homicidal thoughts thought? Or people who have certain other anti-social issues of course they should be denied.

I think the mental health angle needs to be carefully crafted into law so as not to unfairly target nondangerous diagnoses.
Thats my biggest concern. This needs nuance. Otherwise a lot of Americans could lose their gun rights. The number of Americans on mood stabilizers, anxiety medication, and anti depressants is shockingly high. Myself included.

Then in turn if they screw this up and unfairly target millions of Americans I suspect lawyers will be drowning in lawsuits and new clients.
