Discussion: Racism - Part 3

We will get a better picture of this as the days pass, still am I the only one that thinks the attacking car had darkly tinted windshields? Are there laws in Va. against that? My point is, was this a spur of the moment caprice or was this planned out? If you wanted to do something like this and assumed you were going to get away with it, tinting the windows before (and using a car with plates that couldn't be traced back to you) isn't a bad idea.

Bannon is sitting back loving this **** like a supervillain.

Maybe they don't want to get away with it. Going to jail makes them a martyr, right? :(

I can't put this all at Trump's feet. This ugliness has always been there. It's been getting worse and worse since the election of Barack Obama. As soon as he was just nominated for office there was a huge spike in white supremacist activity. All Trump did was ride a wave that was already there to get into the white house.

I will say this is the first time in my lifetime that I've seen people on television, in the political arena, or even in everyday life use the term "White Supremacist" when not talking specifically about Klansmen.

Exactly what I've been saying. This is not Trump's doing, he's just a scapegoat. This didn't happen until Obama became President. It's when people you didn't know were racist started to come out of the woodwork. The hidden racism started to come out and I think Trump just rode it into victory. I know this is just one incident now but wouldn't be surprised if you see more of these sparks across the nation until it's a complete wildfire.

It has, but Trump and Bannon threw back the veil.

This is not the Virginia I spent four wonderful years in. The Virginia I know embraces its diversity, flaws, and inclusiveness.

Trump still emboldened them by his rhetoric, inauguration and silent association.

There were also a lot of young UVA students age 17-23 standing up to the neo-Nazis in Virginia. Heroes, I'd say.

The incident in general is awful though.

Agreed. Trump fostered an environment where it's ok to spew hate and bully those who are different.

Ill give those Alt-righters credit in that they weren't stupid enough to pull this rally in New Orleans where they would have gotten stomped in the ground by a large minority population. They picked a small town up against the Appalachian mountains.

It sucks when the rest of the world thinks all of us think that way when we don't. :(

Agreed. :csad:

Something else I see a lot of is backhanded rhetoric coming out too that is equally disgusting. By that I mean, a friend of my parents came by today, and was talking about this and wondering why people would choose to be Nazi's, but then turned around and made a racist remark regarding African Americans and the stuff with the statues.

When Ted Cruz is calling this domestic terrorism, you know something beyond the pale has happened. Though, I am worried about who he is referring to...

Lots of people still see racism as violence/laws targeting minorities, and not also language.

Sounds like arrests are starting to be made.

Also, Sessions just gave out a much stronger statement. And the DOJ is looking at the car incident as a terrorist incident.

Not going to lie, kind of surprised.

EDIT: Nevermind, it is a civil rights probe. Which means hate crimes could be on the table. Which honestly, is still much more than I expected from Session's DoJ.

Good. Let the guy be charged with a hate crime, same as Dylan Roof.

It's Jeff Sessions. Nothing will happen. He'd give the guy a medal if he could.

I'm not surprised. At the time they put out their initial statements, the situation was still fluid and the suspect hadn't either been caught, fully identified or investigated. Now that they have the suspect in custody and the situation is now a bit more under control, they can give an updated statement. Sometimes it's best to be cautious as a situation is unfolding and then ending.
