The Tea Party may have started out as a Libertarian, but it seems co-opted by social reactionaries at this point.

It makes me laugh how in the 2012 primaries Bachmann was being touted the head of the Tea Party, when Ron Paul was on the stage(a guy who basically fits all the things the Tea Party claims it is for). I do agree with you it does feel like the Tea Party started off as libertarians, but quickly got co-opped by social conservatives and the likes of Glen Beck, Palin and the Koch brothers
 
Perhaps the (de-)evolution of the Tea Party is a microcosm of the principle that pure capitalism by itself is an unmarketable concept to a majority, or even plurality, of the population. That you need social conservatism to get the ignorant to vote against their short-term interests.
