Ziyi Zhang is the Live-Action Mulan

Source: Variety

The Weinstein Company is in final talks to sign a three-picture deal with top Chinese actress Ziyi Zhang, the first being a live-action version of Mulan. Second up with Zhang, the Weinsteins are planning a remake of Akira Kurosawa's 1954 film The Seven Samurai.

Mulan is set up as one of the debut pictures out of the new Meridian Pictures being established by Chinese multi-millionaire David Dong.

The movie is written by Wang Hui-ling (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and forthcoming John Woo project The Battle of Red Cliff). It draws on a Chinese folk tale of a female resistance fighter who disguises herself as her father to take his place in battle.

Disney made Mulan into an animated movie in 1998, but the tale was first put on the big screen in a 1956 Chinese production. The new Chinese-language film's budget is pegged at $20 million, with production scheduled for February.

1-Will Ming-Na, the voice of Disney's Mulan, make a cameo?

2-This movie MUST be dedicated to the memory of Pat Morita, who voiced the Emperor of China in Disney's "Mulan" and "KIngdom Hearts 2".

I know this Mulan is probbaly different from the Disney-fied version so why would it be dedicated to pat Morita? and also does anyone know the actual legend of Mulan?

and a $20 million budget seems a bit low for a movie like this.

I assume this one will be more reality based, with no Eddie Murphy dragon sidekicks. I confess that movie is a guilty pleasure, that animation was excellent.

I have to admit, I think this movie could actually work. I look forward to seeing more of it.

Plus Ziyi's hot, so I see no down side.

Zhang Ziyi is a good choice

remaking Akira? why?

this should be pretty cool... looks like they'll make it pretty martial artsy with all the people involved.

I hope it's treated like Pirates of the Caribbean.

PoTC rocks, and the last time I checked I had a penis and liked girls.
I guess I should check again :(

I hope there isn't a lot of wire work involved. I like Tigger and Dragon, but I like to have my martial arts movies more grounded into reality.

ok knock it off

I love Ziyi and I'd see pretty much anything she's in, on top of that, this sounds like a very fitting role for her.

I wish production started before February though.:(

Oh I've dreamed of this! :D I so can't wait to see how this turns out. Especially with the people involved.

Talk about getting what you wish for! I was just talking to my sister how awesome a live action Mulan movie would be with Ziyi starring as the title character! Sweet:D
