Do people actually like 3D?

I saw Avatar in 3D and non-3D. Non-3D was much more enjoyable, although the movie still sucked. Anyway, does anyone actually like 3D? Do people really want every movie to be in 3D? I'm so sick of seeing everything released in 3D.

I Lol'd

The whole 3D fad is getting pretty ridiculous. I saw the new Resident Evil movie is going to be in 3D and I think I saw on the front page of SHH that Thor, Cap, and The Avengers movie are in talks of 3D as well. Kinda pointless if you ask me but a lot of people are suckered into it.

I freakin' love it and hope it doesn't go away. If people don't like it they have their 2D options. I watch movies in theaters for the experience and if 3D adds to that experience then great. Coraline, Monsters vs Aliens, Up, Toy Story 1 and 2, Avatar, and Alice in Wonderland have all been pleasant experiences for me.

I think the 3-D helped make the only original thing about Avatar stand out, the world, Pandora and it's animals and wildlife.

How was the world original? It was a forest with purple lizards and hippos. Everything was based on something that already exists. That's why I hate when I read how original everything in Avatar was. It really wasn't.

Just like color TV before it, 3D is the next evolutionary step in digital entertainment. And JUST like color tv, and "talkies", there are going to be people who say "why? there's no need! everything was fine the way it was!".

You're wrong. 3D has shown time and time again to be a fad and most people seem to already be sick of it again. It's just a matter of time until 3D TV fails. It's a dumb technology and comparing it to color TV is even dumber. Nobody argued against color TV.

3d is still a number of years off from really being useful or marketable. When I buy I tv I want to be able to watch it from the kitchen when i cook etc or be able to read and dip in and out of programming. Wearing the glasses etc at the moment doesnt really allow this at the moment on a home level.

At cinemas its still slightly sketchy too. The success of Avatar is just leading to a whole host of pointless re-mastered films in lesser quality 3d to come out and for directors to be finding all new ways to make people wave things in front the camera because it "looks cool in 3d". The tech is in danger of eclipsing the actual film content in terms of what storytellers are attempting to do on screen I feel.

3D is a novelty to me, it's good for a once in a while treat at the theaters. Personally, I wouldn't want it at home until there is no need to use the glasses, then I'd say it would be cool to have in my home theater.

3D's ok. I do think it's overdone. It works for kids. Mine love it. But all movies don't need the 3D treatment.

either way Gamma, this thread wont stop the studios from making 3D movies, so your best bet is to stick around and continue to watch 2D films.

I don't dislike it, if I had the choice between a 3D movie and the same movie in 2D, I would pick 3D any time. The problem is after about half an hour to an hour, you're just paying attention to the story.

I know that it didn't add a darned thing to Alice in Wonderland!

That's an interesting word to use.

I've only seen one 3d movie in theaters and really didn't care for it, and don't see the need for everything to be 3d. But as long as they still have 2d versions of the film coming out I don't care. Its when they force people to see 3d movies, without giving them a option that'll piss me off.

The problem with 3D is that I have yet to see it used in a way that furthers the story, even in Avatar. It often becomes simply an obnoxious distraction.

I quite liked AiW in 3D, I was surprised at how well the 3D looked in that considering it was upconverted to 3D in post-production.

The best 3D experience I had so far though has been Ice Age 3, the 3D really worked well with that movie.

You could have said great, incredible, awesome experience. But you said "pleasant", that's interesting to me.

Wow. Did 3D touch you as a child? It must have, since you're being so hostile about it.

First off, NO, I'm NOT wrong; take a History of Media course, or hell, talk to your grandparents. There were many who didn't care for it and/or opposed the transition to color tv and talking pictures, just like there are people who are opposed to 3D now.

3D is just a fad (again)? That is certinaly true for 3d in the past, but if thats the case NOW, when was the last time companies spent millions of dollars developing 3d TVs? When was the last time game companies developed 3d hand held game devices (Nintendo is releasing one soon)? When was the last time a 3d movie won numerous Oscars?

In this economy, companies arent going to spend hundreds of millions of dollars developing new technology for a "fad", if they're not going to push to keep it.

You might not like it, but that doesn't mean you have to call people's opinions dumb, much less ignore the logic stemming from the awareness of reality.

You should take your own advice and read up on the Virtual Boy.

You dismissed it because it would make your argument redundant.

You asked, I answered.

considering the virtual boy was a gaming device that

1) wasn't intended to replace any of nintendo's other hand helds,
2) was pushed through development so they could focus on the N64
3) by way of that, was a product that feel incredibly short of nintendo's expectations...

no, I don't think its a point that affects my argument negatively. Nintendo is currently developing a 3d version of their DS, which will be true 3d in the terms that we know now, and will be a true hand held device. The VB was a good idea (for the time), that got killed in development hell. The existence of the virtual boy or not, my point still stands.

:awesome:

3D is okay, I can do without it, but the only movie I'm truly pumped for is Tron in 3D, and that's about it.
