And while things can of course change, Waititi has also outright stated that he's not interested in any other Marvel characters but Thor.

Having said that, the GOTG seem even more suited to Taika's oddball sense of humour than Thor - who worked, as a character, really well with GOTG and fit right in with their silliness.

Who knows ? Until a couple of weeks ago the only director anyone was interested in for GOTG3 was Gunn - these things change, quickly.

While I don't like the fact that Disney fired Gunn, I don't see how they can hire him back without creating another firestorm. I think they should postpone GOTG 3 and wait a year, and see whether they should get a new director or quietly rehire Gunn back.

It's Disney and no I sure as hell don't. While I found the tweets in poor taste, they were written before he was hired. There is no excuse for Disney to do so, in fact I find it hypocritical. He didn't commit any crimes and if you look at the reddit where someone has gone through them, there was no more than 20 out of thousands.

If Disney wants to stand on shaky moral high ground and judge others on their past, maybe we should the same. At least James Gunn acknowledged these tweets years ago and apologised for them. Disney only buried their racist content, never apologised and pretends it never happened #ReHireJamesGunn

What's baffling to me and shows how tone def Gunn can be is that he never went back and cleaned up his Twitter knowing he was going to work for Disney.

Just complete lack of common sense or dare I say ego.

Unless the "Rocket Raccoon as final easter egg" rumors are true. In which case, he understood that his history was out there and that if people could learn to love Rocket in spite of his professional a-hole-isms, they could learn to love Gunn and accept him in spite of his past flaws.

Guardians letter of support.

So they never actually asked for him to come back, did they?

It's being reported that they did, but they're kinda dancing around it, and never actually saying it.

I read it more of a polite warning shot across the bow.

How is no-one talking about this statement from the Guardians?

Pratt directly said he wants Gunn to return.

With the industry talk that Disney is looking towards bringing him back (Waiting on Iger to get back to make final call) I see a lot of commenters going on about how it's a "tough call" because people will be mad either way. If you ask me, it's not tough at all. The Alt-Right trolls already hate Disney, making them more mad won't hurt anything. Angering the fans and crew of one of your top franchises will.

Ehhhhh... the alt-right trolls are not the only people who dislike him now. I've seen plenty of comments from MCU fans, woke Twitter, etc. condemning the cast (especially Pratt, for some reason) for defending Gunn.

Pratt cited a biblical reference in his response, and has labeled himself a christian. I think they were looking to him to take up their cause.

Instead he turned the other cheek and chose to focus on Gunn's future rather than his past.

And him being an outspoken Christian is exactly the reason I believe he's getting criticized more that the other cast members... but I digress.

I saw what people said to him when he said he would pray for Kevin Smith a few months back. So I think you're 100% correct.

You may have seen some people attacking Pratt but his tweet got 121,000 likes and 25,000 retweets. That is very substantial support from the public. Disney probably won't rehire Gunn but there are hundreds of thousands of people giving him support.

On that last note, Variety's sources say that there is a possibility of Gunn being reinstated since Disney hasn't even begun to search for a new director. However, the report is extremely vague and doesn't reveal whether the "sources" are people who work at Disney and would have knowledge of the deliberations behind the scenes. The reporters could just be blowing smoke.

That's not substantial at all. It's a drop in the bucket.

I'll actually be surprised if Disney don't rehire Gunn at this point; at least to wrap up Vol 3. Gunn has stated before that Vol 3 (at least) was to be the final film with the current team, so it may be that either Disney call Guardians at the end of Vol 3, or launch the second trilogy with a completely different cast and director; current characters can have cameos in future films, or be present on Earth and assisting the Avengers.

I admit that I'm beginning to think this might be a stalling tactic by Disney. Fire him, delay things, wait until the heat dies down and the Fox buyout is closed, then rehire him at a later date. Kind of Iike what WWE did with Hulk Hogan.

On a related note, seems that both Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth un-followed James Gunn.

At this point, I would not surprised to hear that Gunn will be re-hired but if he does somehow get his job back he needs to either stop using Twitter or not use it as much as before. After this controversy he needs to stay clear away from tweeting about politics and just focus on making movies. I appreciate that he’s politically conscious enough to talk about these subjects openly on a public platform like Twitter but this scandal has marked him forever and has given his opponents who disagree with him politically a lot more amno to attack him with.

He can no longer argue with people on twitter without being called a ‘pedo’ or something. You better believe they won’t just be calling him a ‘SJW’ or a ‘*******’ anymore. For the sake of your mental health Gunn if/when your re-hired lay off all that.

I'm not so sure about this; if they keep Gunn waiting, he may just turn down their offer of rehiring, and then they'll be a bit stuck.

This is disappointing, though hardly surprising. I don't know about Hemsworth, but Evans does a lot of work for child charities, so the tweets and jokes aren't necessarily going to be a laughing matter to him.

I guess the Guardian cast know Gunn better than the Avengers cast, and so are in a better position to judge the person he is now, whereas the Avengers cast don't know him so much as a person, and have taken his tweets like a portion of the internet - as offensive.

Just stay off twitter, it's full of self-righteous parasites. James unfortunately got sucked into that vortex himself.

Reading that Gunn and Disney will have a sit down gives me great hope. Bring him home Feige.

There’s no room for child molestation jokes in Steve Rogers America and the Son Of Odin has determined that Mr. Gunn is ‘unworthy’ to hold his Twitter hammer.

Frankly, I believe that most people should stop using Twitter and Facebook. Not much good comes from exposing oneself to abuse on social media. Celebrities should consider those sites as marketing tools and nothing more if they want to avoid controversy. Instagram might be useful if and only if comments were disabled.

I've always been wary of social media. More people should be.
