Guardians of the Galaxy James Gunn back to direct

This is great news for the cosmic side of the MCU. Also I’ll be interested to see how open the end of GotG3 is. Is there any finality to it with some characters stories settling, or are there likely to be any more Guardians films any time soon.

Avengers... trailer... awesomness... that whole thing?
did ya miss that?

I deliberately ignore the trailers because I don't want to see too much from the film, especially when it comes out in only a month. I prefer seeing things fresh. So I wasn't even paying attention to whether it came out.

This is...what...the 22nd MCU film to be directed at least in part by a white man? Marvel's pro-white male agenda is out of control!

Lmaooooooo.

I hate that Guardians 3 was delayed but this kinda worked out for comic book fans. Now we get two guaranteed awesome movies from James Gunn with both a Marvel and DC logo in front of em.
Yeah, that’s totally cool with me. Hopefully this means talent can move between the studios more freely in future.

I've been running errands all day and just saw this truly wonderful news. Kudos to Disney and Marvel Studios for (finally) doing the right thing. The bad guys - the alt right garbage humans and their social justice purity enablers - take a well deserved "L".

Agreed. It's a win for rationality over outrage culture.

Glad to see Taika have the best take on the whole matter. I'm still holding on to hope that Waititi is announced for Thor 4.

This was unexpected, but extremely pleasant news. Twas some ol' bulldookie to begin with.

Glad Taika could find even a moment of levity considering what has happened in his country.

Thank you for mentioning that - we are all still in shock. While things like this atrocity have happened around the world this is a first for us.

I'm thrilled that Gunn is back but we're in a state of national mourning - I don't want to drag the discussion down so I'll leave that there.

What's the prevailing theory as to the real reason JG has been reinstated ?

I am so glad and pretty surprised. This was a smart move by Disney, he really has the best connection to the actors/characters and the cosmic plan in the MCU. Most are probably not even going to remember what happen. Shame it had to deal with a delay but let the good times roll again.

The best one I've heard is that Horn and Disney realised soon after their hasty decision that they effed up big time by canning a director who gave them two extremely successful flicks without a whiff of impropriety, all while maintaining the full support of his cast and crew. And that this foolish decision left their mega corporation very vulnerable to both Alt Right trolls and the Social Justice Purity Police.

The delay in announcing the reinstatement was to wait until the Fox deal was closed and prevent certain political types from using Gunn's return (But Roseanne!!!!) to put a wrench in the closing process.

Why Would WB fire James Gunn after Disney has just made it clear that they are going to wait for him to finish SS2?
Because they might want a director who's more invested than just finishing SS2. These tent pole movies require a much higher level of commitment, work, and attention than your usual projects. They might not want a guy who just wants to finish their movie ASAP just so he can get to his dream project.

This is rather silly.

Directors direct. It's their job. Directors routinely line up a project that they know they're going to jump to right after they finish the project they're on. Famously, Speilburg was nearly doing JP and Schindler's List at the same time. Nolan jumped right from BB to Prestige, to Inception, to TDKR, to Interstellar. I didn't see any studios being mad at him for having another project lined up as he was filming his current one.

Thinking a director won't do his job well because he has another job coming....when it is their lively hood to secure a new job right after they finish their current one, is, quite frankly, a very silly take.

There's nothing abnormal about this. It's fairly standard.

Abnormal was more what Whedon did with his crossover considering he context.

My thoughts and prayers are with New Zealand.

Mickey got his nose bloody, and I love it.

Finally an MCU movie besides Black Panther 2 I can be excited about!

(Also to the cast, most especially Bautista):

I would not be surprised if this was always the plan and they waited until the Fox-Disney stuff was a totally done deal.

I'm not sure it was always in the plan but it sounds like this has been in the works for several months and is only just now being released for whatever reason.

With Suicide Squad 2 being released in 2021 we can expect earliest a 2023/24 release
2024 will also be the 10th anniversary of Vol. 1
That’s an awful long time....we could‘ve had this easier Disney
