My opinion is that BOTH of their approaches are crap.
As others have said, Marvel turns out mediocre and crappy movies like they're fast food. The first two X-Men movies, and the first two Spidey movies are the only ones that are widely respected.
DC, meanwhile can't seem to get off its ass and make ONE movie that's not about Superman or Batman. Hell, after
Superman Returns, they're afraid to even make another movie about Superman. SUPERMAN. The guy whose symbol is literally more recognized than any other symbol that's not the Christian Cross.
What pisses me off the most is that the companies seem to take turns sucking ass:
Time line of suck:
-In the mid to late 90s, the once successful Batman franchise was ruined by Schumacher's campy crap and a nippled costume.
-Marvel makes a relatively low-key, but extremely badass movie about Blade. Hey, comic books in general would make great summer movies! Early 90s favorite X-Men (very popular to an entire generation due to the cartoon), is next to get the big screen treatment. Then Marvel's flagship character, Spider-Man, blows everyone away.
-Halle stars in CINO.
That was DC's "answer" to Marvel's big screen success? So pathetic. Marvel cleans house with
Spider-Man 2. Marvel rules, DC sucks!
-But before that, Marvel made an
Inflatable Hulk movie, where everyone talked too much and the hero fought Absorbing
Dad. Later,
Elektra bombed and
Blade Trinity ruined a once successful series. The Fantastic Four were then handed over to a comedy director with NO vision for superhero action epics, and what we got was a lame big screen SITCOM. Doom, one of the greatest villains in comics, was utterly ruined.
-But hey,
Batman Begins came out, and it rocked! And Superman is getting a movie, directed by that genius Bryan Singer! WB really pulled off a coup by taking him away from the X-Men franchise! Marvel's sucking now, but DC's heading up!
-Damn, Singer didn't have to make
Superman Returns a weird semi-sequel to the decades-dead original movie series! And Super-son was so lame! To be honest I thought SR was an overall good movie, nothing nearly as bad as Marvel's flops. But I seriously disagreed with the BACKWARDS direction SR took the character in. Singer failed to bring Superman alive to a whole new generation, instead squandering the movie's potential so that he could worship the Donner movies more.
-The 3rd X-Men and Spider-Man movies sucked! Everything sucks!
-The WB, understandably disappointed in SR's lackluster financial performance, starts apparently
overcompensating by trying to rush a brainless JLA movie out the door before a Hollywood strike. Without trying to get back some of the same actors, or making more (necessary) solo movies first.
-But hey, the Iron Man movie has a great cast and is looking pretty good. There may be some hope yet...how long before Marvel cycles back to sucking again?
